An Outsider's Take on The Chiefs: The Broncos' Perspective

In our final Outsider's Take, we finally talk to someone from the MileHighReport to get their take on the Kansas City Chiefs off-season and the state of the team from our rival's point of view. Many thanks to Stephen (hoosierteacher) from MHR for answering our questions and for giving us some intelligent answers. In case you missed the first two, you can catch the Chargers' perspective here and the Raiders' installment here. On with the Broncos:

Q: Before any of the housecleaning took place, so to speak, what was the perception toward the Chiefs as to their legitimacy within the division (i.e. how concerned were you guys about the Chiefs within the division in the foreseeable future)?

A:
The Raiders are in the basement, and as long as they have their current owner, I don't see any change. The Chargers are the best of the division, but aging. Cracks are showing, and I think they are in decline. The Broncos are taking steps backwards and forwards, and this year is no different. Overall, the team is improving. KC is a team that is building over the long term. It may irritate fans, but it's the best way to build a team that can sustain success for a long while. In the next two to three years, I expect Denver and KC to be the powerhouses in the AFC West, with SD third and Oak a distant fourth.

Q: Now that the dust of the offseason has largely settled, has that perception changed? Why or why not?

A:
My perception remains the same. KC had a very good draft in my opinion, and has been smooth in their off season moves. I think the team will have some tough games on the schedule, but the play of the team will be much improved.

Q: What was the one or two moves the Chiefs pulled this offseason that upset you the most?

A:
I think a lot of Denver fans might have wanted your new QB to come to Denver with Coach McDaniels instead of going to a division rival. As the dust has settled, I think many fans at milehighreport are feeling good about Orton. Cutler was flashy and gained a lot of yards, but he rarely scored and he threw a lot of INTs. Orton had a much better record, and did it with lesser WRs and a lesser OL. But before Orton started growing on some of us, I think many of us coveted Cassel.

Q. What are the primary one or two things, from your perspective, that still need to be done?

A:
I think that there are are two areas of concern moving forward. First, I think a coaching change was needed. No matter how good the new coach is, there will be an adjustment period. With Haley's tough style, the team may benefit in the long term, but I think things might be a little rough the first year. The coach will need to assert his style, but it will take time to sink in with guys used to the Edwards approach.

In close proximity to the first point, I think the change to the 3-4 is the right move, but will likewise suffer an adjustment period at first. Those would be my two biggest concerns. In terms of players, I think the Chiefs are moving forward well. I think the Chiefs made a little bit of a short term sacrifice for a long term gain.

Q: Finally, what do you predict for the Chiefs over the next two NFL seasons?

A:
I think the Chiefs will have a turbulent year this year, with some promising wins and awful losses. However, I expect the Chiefs to pass SD in the second year (with Den), and to be positioned for a fight to make the playoffs. Like Denver, I think the Chiefs had to take a step back in order to take several steps forward. This year I think KC will have close to an even or better season. Next year, I think they will be competing for a playoff spot. Beyond that, I think KC will have an established, competitive program for several years.

Yes, thanks Stephen

you’re alright…for a Denver fan =)

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

Agreed.

As much as I detest the Donkeys I have to admit, the MHR University posts are always well put together and informative and the answers he provided here live up to the same standard. Thanks Stephen!

Don't get us wrong...you're the cheifs

we still hate you (especially in December) but not nearly as much as we hate the other two teams…

I’m curious to see how Bowe does without Gonzo and with a different QB. As much as I hate to say it, i’m targeting him in FF because I think he’ll be great value.

Pretty accurate well reasoned assesment.

I disagree with some points, but overall the comments are very competent.

Very nice

If you don’t know, HT does MHR University of at Mile High Report. It’s one of the best series on SBNation.

Thanks, HT.

+1

those reports are especially helpful to fans who never had the chance to play football at a college level. and by fans I mean me.

Hands down

MHR University is some of the best user content I’ve ever read. Not only on SBNation either…

Nice interview to boot.

Thank you, Stephen

Always good to get an outside perspective. Well thought out, and didn’t bash us, as a lot of fans of opposing teams would be tempted to do! Welcome back, anytime!

I expected this to be Trash Talk

Well Done! Put the rivalry aside and put together a good response.

by florida chief on Jul 1, 2009 1:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The main similarity between all three: The Chiefs are headed in the right direction.

All three responses (or subsequent comments) included KC and either the Broncos, Chargers, or Raiders (depending on who was answering) as competing teams and the teams to beat with the other two sliding backward in the next few years.

by JComp11 on Jul 1, 2009 1:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thats the thing I noticed too

It seems that all three teams within the division expect themselves and the Chiefs to be the ones battling it out for the division crown over the next few years. That is probably the most promising news to come from this. Although, it seemed like the Chargers take was a little more skeptical of our ability to compete in the next few years than the Raiders and Broncos takes on us.

In the comments the writer admitted he was wrong about almost every reason he to not think the Chiefs were improving as much as others do.

by JComp11 on Jul 1, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats cuz SD fans suck....

Seriously, they are bigger assholes than anyone i ever encountered at a Broncos game (in denver). Oakland for some reason is the only place i am scared of and have not been in our division. But i still give them more props than the assholes in SD, what a bunch of arrogant pricks out there. Maybe they were just pissed cuz that was the game we won 2 years ago (in the 4-12 season) and we shut em out in the 2nd half.

by xfatdannx on Jul 1, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was a great read

Very refreshing after the Chargers and Raiders one, which both seemed to suffer a little due to tunnel vision. Makes me hope both the Chiefs and the Broncos sweep both the Raiders and Chargers… and that is very hard for me to say.

I think its funny
I expect the Chiefs to pass SD in the second year (with Den), and to be positioned for a fight to make the playoffs

Compared to the Raiders interview:

I see the Chiefs and the Raiders on the rise and the two will probably be battling it out for a playoff spot for 2010 season

Chiefs are going to take a couple years to get there because of the changes in coaching and defense, but I don’t think San Diego is just going to crash and burn. They still have a lot of good players.

Raiders will always suck as long as Al Davis is there.

I believed the Broncos could be on the way up when they had Shanahan, Cutler and Marshall, but now that all three are gone I think they are starting all over. McDaniels is COMPLETELY unproven and their new QB is Kyle Orton.

For the next couple years its STILL going to be the Chargers with the Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos fighting it out for a distant 2nd place. However, in a couple years, the Chargers will begin to lose their edge. They aren’t going to drop to being a last place team all the sudden, but they won’t have the edge they do now.

If Haley has any idea what he’s doing and Cassel wasnt last years version of Derrick Anderson and with the young players Herm bit the bullet on giving experience to, the Chiefs should be in a good position to be a great team for years to come and be ascending while the Chargers are decending.

Broncos, it remains to be seen. It doesnt look good right now. Raiders will always suck.

Until Cassel proves otherwise

You gotta go with the team that has the most proven QB and that’s Rivers and the Chargers.

by Joel Thorman on Jul 1, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

best statement i have heard in awhile made me laugh ChiefDJ

( Herm bit the bullet on giving experience to the Chiefs) Saint Herm sacrificed himself so those young players could know how NOT to play football.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Jul 1, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I smelled hesitation in his responses...

I don’t care how Denver fans try to rationalize it – you traded a Pro Bowl Stud who had no defense for Kyle Orton. ‘Nuff Said. Now, with Brandon Marshall, he’s a head case, and getting rid of him might not be such a bad idea, but unless Orton shows he can be a solid QB, I don’t see how that team is going to improve with the Chiefs. The Chiefs will be the class of this division in two years, and in three-four years, playing for SBs. Denver, well, Good Luck with Kyle Orton.

by FredThreezy on Jul 1, 2009 3:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You might be surprised.

Compare Cutler and Orton on wins, touchdowns, and interceptions. Cutler has a lot more yards, but I’ll take the QB with a better record in the other three stats any day.

On top of this, add in that Denver will provide a better offensive line and receivers for Orton than he had in Chicago.

I don’t think Orton is the better QB. Cutler certainly has much more potential. But Orton makes a lot less mistakes, and wins a lot more games (with less). With the trade (Cutler for picks 1,1,3 and Orton for a 5), I think both team made out very well.

Just my opnion.

I agree

Cutler is very talented but somehow never made me think he was Elway even if he does think he can throw better. From what I had seen of Orton, I thought maybe Chicago had finally found the guy that could be stable enough to keep them winning. I’m not all that crazy about having to face him twice a year.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Thanks for the post

I thought of the 3 this is by far the best and most accurate post. As a life long KC fan now living in Denver I’d love to see the Broncos and Chiefs fighting for the division title again. I do think these are the 2 teams that are going in the right direction and expect to see their games carry the weight of previous years.

Great post, appreciate the comments. Isn't it interesting how all of us faithful fans...

….think that our teams will come out the best. I really think that the Chief’s could surprise everybody and do very, very well but I also have to admit that some of the concerns could turn out legitimate and that also bothers me.

by jcox31mc on Jul 1, 2009 4:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeppers...

Still a lot of question marks on this team but, things are definitely lookin up.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jul 1, 2009 4:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well written...

…and thoughtful responses. The only thing I will debate is the “adjustment period” for Haley. The Chiefs may not be at their best this year and may improve with subsequent seasons, but there will also be immediate improvement (even if Haley is not the answer in the long term, it is hard not to improve over Herm doing almost everything wrong).

I also think Josh McDaniels screwed the pooch on the Cutler situation. Every team wants to draft a franchise QB, but it very rarely happens. Denver had one, and McDaniels traded him just as he is theoretically hitting his prime. The offense wasn’t broken, so don’t fix it. Work on that defense. That being said, of course only time will tell, and Orton could prove me wrong. I have been wrong before, although it is rare. ; )

Thanks for the outside perspective.

by LarryDoggyDog on Jul 1, 2009 5:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Two quick points.

1. I think the Chiefs will improve right away too, even with an adjustment period for Haley. I just think that the improvement will be much more rapid in his second season.

2. A lot of the media reporting on Cutler was over the top. One thing that keeps getting lost in the mix: Cutler was demanding a trade right after Shanahan’s firing and BEFORE McDaniels arrived. At Milehighreport, a lot of the fans are annoyed that McDaniles seems to get the blame for Cutler’s insistence on leaving. While Cutler used the exceuse that McDaniels had listened to an offer from another team (an offer McDaniels rejected), he forgets to add that he was demanding a trade before McDaniels was offered the job, and before the other team even talked to McDaniels. The offer came about because of Jay’s initial demand.

because he came and talked to us like we do.
I wish that the Raider and Bronco rep had done the same :(

Thanks for taking the time HT

Well thought out and written. KC close to even or better! I doubt it but hope springs eternal.

Cutler seems to be a “me first” type guy and may not have been a good fit in Denver under McD. and Orton has an opportunity to be very good under McD. I also think it was a smart move for Cutler and his agent to get a new contract now instead of later while everyone still sees him as a “franchise” quarterback. (After all he was in the Pro Bowl) He now has a chance to grow up in Chicago and maybe actually become a “franchise” quarterback. Although Cassel may be seen as a possible bust by some, I’ll take his abilities and mature leadership over Cutler anytime.

I want to thank everyone for the kind words in the comments.

I’ve always felt that the Chiefs are a class act organization, and have always reserved my dislike for the Raiders. In fact, in my younger days I lived walking distance from Arrowhead.

All the best to you guys, and best of luck to your team (except against Denver). Here’s to an injury free season, and good times for all.
