Tyler Thigpen vs. Michael Vick

Ok, I have ran into a discussion in another post about this. I say Michael Vick would be the preferred choice in QB's between himself and Thigpen. This is based solely on ability not personal choices outside of football.

All things aside I would take Vick over Thigpen anyday of the week. Please dont misunderstand my statement....I love Tyler Thigpen! I think he is one heck of a player considering he was drafted 7th round and played at Coastal Carolina. Now back to the point. I am going to lay out some ground work here.....I will let AP decide.

I know everyone loves Bones....he is the underdog...Rudy...Rocky Balboa...etc. But lets drop the logo on the helmets for a minute here....Your have been put in charge of a new NFL franchise.....you have picked all your players except QB.....the last two QB's left are Michael Vick and Tyler Thigpen. Your owner says win now or lose your job.....who do you pick??

Sorry..gotta roll with Vick on this one.

I am basing this on ability only. I freaking HATE Michael Vick and really like Thigpen but, I gotta be realistic here. MV is the better of the two.

Is this a late april fools joke. I mean dont get me wrong I love me some thig

but damn Mike vick is so sick he is a game changer and he really really has something to prove. Thig had two wins last season and in a few he looked spectacular but vick pretty much looks spectacular every sunday. And with vick it was like ok we just need to contain this guy. where thig its like ok how many mistakes can we make him give up. vick all day long . in fact i wouldent even mind getting vick in case cassel gets lit .

Did you read the stats?

Vick is terrible at reading D’s, just as bad as Thiggy.
Vick doesn’t ever read his check downs. He either tosses it to the #1 guy or tucks it and runs.
Vick has fumblitis, and a bad case of it.

Why does everyone remember only the “exciting” plays and never the actual passing production.

Lastly, Thiggy is an upstanding citizen and Vick is a piece of shit.

Winners can!
Alas, Vick cannot and Thigpen still has opportunities.

Give me Thigpen

Give him some coaching and some more opportunity, I say he has the potential to be a much better QB than Vick. I don’t think we have a pressing need for him to ascent to the #1 spot but I’m more than confident in his abilities in the event that we needed him to.

I think Vick was a shit QB who lacks the intangibles necessary to play the position. No brains, no poise, no leadership skills and no decision making abilities. Go Bones!

Iunno

a players outside life effects his game. You can count on Thigpen to be there for you every game, he’s tough, talented, and has a good head on his shoulders. Also factor in that consistent play at QB is key. Cassel and Thigpen are a lot alike whereas they strive out of the gun and have the ability to get out of the pocket with their feet. Then you have the whole thing about money and you know where I stand already

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

Very interesting question Matt

I am a little torn here, but I have to go with Thigpen. I completely agree that Vick is the better athlete, which is saying a lot, and actually the better QB as well. While not the best thrower in the game, Vick was good enough to lead an offense to score, which is all you can ask out of a QB. I take Thigpen on attitude alone. Hands down.

by TheQ on Jun 7, 2009 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

I see your point

Your team your choice. I dont think you can really go wrong with either one….you cant say hands down vick or hands down thiggy. They both have pros and cons. Vick has issues….bad issues. Bones is a young tough smart guy. He is taking a different path than Vick….and it may pay off. He could learn under Cassel, Gailey and Haley, then when his time comes he can lead a team full time….or he may end up another Todd Collins or Damon Huard. A guy with a big heart but limited skill set.

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 8, 2009 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

True, I shouldn't have said hands down

because they both have strengths and weaknesses. Thigpen probably has the bigger ceiling, only because he is so young and we haven’t seen enough out of him to say he cannot grow anymore in the position. I think we have seen how good Vick can be, and of the two, I would choose Thigpen because of his good attitude and willingness and desire to get better. Vick just took way too many things for granted, and it had to be extremely difficult to lose it all. Would he be hungry to prove himself, sure. But for all his talent, I would still pass. But all that said, I would take Cassel over Thigpen. My brother-in-law is a huge Thigpen fan, even to the point of being mad that we traded for Cassel. I can totally understand the appeal of Thigpen, but if you look at the games he played in, he struggled quite a bit. I think the jury is still out on what kind of QB he could be.

by TheQ on Jun 8, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

The fact...........

That we are doing a poll on picking between Bones and a complete loser is depressing for me! Its a simple choice for me because theirs no upside to Vick he has improved all he can, and he still cant throw the ball! Bones is still young and could be a very good QB in a couple of years! I myself would rather watch him improve on the field this year, but we all know thats not going to happen! How about a tuff pole like M.ALLEN OR P.HOLMES?

by CPT.Caveman on Jun 8, 2009 12:52 AM CDT reply actions

Thiggy wins...

We’re talking about QB not Wildcat formation QB and Thigpen can throw the ball downfield. Vick has no arm.

by GenericBrand on Jun 8, 2009 1:25 AM CDT reply actions

Thigpen

is the obvious choice. News flash: Michael Vick was and never will be a good QB. If you keep Vick contained in the pocket what happens? He’s forced to actually do the job of a QB and make reads, and throw to an open receiver which HE CANNOT DO!!!!! Please don’t retort with “Vick didn’t have any receivers.” Cuz he did have Alge Crumpler and Roddy White, and White by the way went to the Pro Bowl I believe this past year. So yeah this shouldn’t even be a discussion since Michael Vick is OVERRATED.

by scharny on Jun 8, 2009 2:25 AM CDT reply actions

See above

Roddy White was a rookie in 2005 and only had 8 starts. He only had 5 starts the following year in 2006. 13 starts is hardly enough to time to build any sort of a rapport with a receiver. You say Michael Vick is overrated, but how many times did you see Thiggy key on Tony G and throw into double, and occasionally triple coverage. Alge Crumpler doesn’t hold a candle to Tony G. Vick didn’t have any reliable receivers — period. Roddy White broke out well after Vick. Thigpen is good enough to sub in and carry a team. He’s not good enough when he’s actually schemed against (see most of the 2nd halves of last season’s games).

I could get more sacks with my sack

by ArrowSpread on Jun 8, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

ok .........

now back to real life boys! M.Vick is a loser and a terrible QB, so frickin what if he has a cannon for a arm, he still couldnt hit a barn if he was standing 20 feet away !!!! The dude is a disgrace to the league let alone the position of QB!
Most of the time our offense went into a shell in the 2nd half, and our coaching was terrible, so try coming up with something else OK ! M.Vick’s only skill is running with the ball and killing dogs……….he fails at being a human!

by CPT.Caveman on Jun 8, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

ALSO

I would start Pee Wee Herman before i would Vick!

by CPT.Caveman on Jun 8, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

No shit, so would I

I also think that taking out extraneous components of each guy’s character makes this entire post moot. It takes Thigpen’s upside and Vick’s downside out of the analysis so the entire post has a slant towards Vick, which is the author’s preference… and yet, the poll indicates more AP participants would chose Bone’s to win now or lose their job.

Hey Buck.

My intentions are not to bash Bones…..They are not to praise Vick. My point was to simply point out that Vick is a better QB. He won games…..that is a fair measure. He took the Falcons to the playoffs….
Lots of players have off the field troubles….Jared Allen for example. Everyone has their issues and its not up to us to judge who is a good person and who isnt. On the field only…

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 8, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand your intentions

but IMO it’s a skewed approach that favors Vick if you don’t include his incredible down-side and at the same time you dismiss Thigpen’s up-side. You’re basically asking for a comparison of life-time statistics. Of course Vick wins out. He started how many games over how many years? Thigpen doesn’t even have a full year under his belt. I’m just sayin’ there are more intangibles that would weigh heavily into a decision like this. This isn’t an apples to apples comparison. To make it fair, or even realistic, the other stuff should be factored in. That’s probably why more people are voting for Bones.

I honestly think Vick is a terrible QB and I think Thigpen is well on his way to becoming a pretty good one. But therein lies the rub… Thigpen hasn’t really been around long enough to be considered a good QB (yet) now has he?

Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!

by Buck'O on Jun 8, 2009 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Thiggy

Just look at the stats from their first years (ignoring 07 for thiggy), and thigpen had higher rating, better TD/INT ratio and fewer fumbles. Looks to me like Thigpen would have a much better shot at improving and being a stud. I never did think Vick was shit for a quarterback, just an amazing athlete that could keep a defense off balance. I don’t think Vick would ever become as good a pocket passer as Randall Cunningham did.

by Zodeman on Jun 8, 2009 7:34 AM CDT reply actions

Thigpen

Had to go with Bones based on the fact that Vick actually believes he was a good QB, which I personally disagree with. I don’t want the #1 rusher on the field to be the QB. It’s nice to have a guy who can move around but there’s a lot more to it than that. Thigpen is on the rise, Vick had already plateaued before he went to prison. I’ll take the guy who has the potential.

There's always next week,,, and when we run out of weeks, there's always next year!

Woahhh!

Please tell me your kidding people. Yes Michael Vick is a piece of $**t but this is a comparison of who is a better QB and countless fans would pick Tyler “Thiggy” over Michael Vick base soley on skill set/athlete/efficiency???

Listen, I get it. We are all Chiefs fans here but this is just being blind and closed minded. Thigpen wouldn’t stand a chance in a QB battle with Vick. Not a chance.

I voted for Thiggy

Just because of Vick’s rep.

I do respect that Vick is a better Athlete but I would never want him on my team. A bunch of people threw a fit about Matt Jones and how his past drug issues would make him a disgrace for the jersey.

Anyone who can harm innocents like animals the way Vick did is a disgrace of a human, not just a football player. The test of a man isn’t how he treats his friends or bosses, its how he treats those he has power over. Vick failed that test horribly.

In his first full season as starter he took the Falcons to the playoffs…..the next season he was hurt they sucked….when he came back guess what they went to the playoffs again. Michael Vick actually won some games as QB…..must be pretty good.

Is everybody missing the fact

that Vick has been in an 8×8 cell for the past two years? He may come out and surprise, but I highly doubt his game is even close to what it was before he went to jail. Does anybody really think his crappy accuracy improved playing in a real-life version of The Longest Yard?

If I'm picking a QB for a team I want the guy wo IS better, not the guy who WAS better.

Thigpen IS the better QB right now. His numbers hold up to Vicks and exceed them in some areas.
His explosiveness as a runner was never in question last year.
He has played football in the NFL the most recently.
He is younger with a better upside.
He is not currently suspended indefinitely from the NFL or serving house arrest.

Vick is 30+ and 2 years removed from the NFL.
It doesn’t matter how much weight he lifted in prision, there is no way that Vick is in “football shape”. It’s just not the same thing as bring in shape.
Vick’s legs are 30+ years old too.
Vick was never a prolific passer, and his “upside” to improve in the future is severely limited by the number of years he has left.
Vick hasn’t taken a snap in over 2 years. He “may” be used to lining up behind a guy that is bent over, but it’s not the same thing.

I’ll take the guy that IS the better QB right now — Thigpen, over the guy that WAS the better QB 4 years ago. In the NFL you have to live in the present and the future, not the past. You don’t sign/pay a guy for what he DID for someone else 3 years ago, you evaluate what he can do for you now. There is no evaluation possible on a guy that has been out of the game for 2 years and currently works construction while suspended from the league.

Hey CPT.Caveman...

As bad as you want this topic to be about which player (Thigpen or Vick) would you rather want wearing a Chiefs jersey its not…it was a simple question – Who is a better QB, athlete and winner on the field, Tyler Thigpen or Michael Vick…which I can’t even believe someone thought of comparing the two.

As I said before, yes he’s a piece of $&**, but the winner = Vick. Next topic please :)

by chiefnyc on Jun 8, 2009 10:33 PM CDT reply actions

The point is........

M.Vick has a strong arm and can run, his only good point’s, but you have to be able to get the ball to your WR’s which he cant! Vick has never been able to hit a open WR to save his life! Bone’s at least has the chance to improve he is still young! Vick is done improving and he is not a good QB yet!

Hey chiefnyc..

As bad as you want this to be about who USED to be a better QB… it isn’t.

It’s about who (thigpen vs. vick) IS the better QB right now.
It isn’t even an argument. A guy that has not played in 2 years, is approaching 30 years old, hasnt taken so much as a snap on an intermural league, was never a prolific passer when he did play, and had a bad case of fumblitis in his prime does not even compare tpo a guy that started 10+ games as a pro in the NFL last season.

You can argue all you want about who was better 3 years ago. None of that changes the fact that right now Thigpen is the better QB.
