We’re going to put his theory about secrecy vs. talent to the test.
It’s my contention that you win professional football, basketball, baseball and hockey games primarily by securing more talent than your competitors. Pioli contends you do it by keeping more secrets than your competitors.
Hmm. Did the Patriots win three Super Bowls because Tom Brady was the dominant quarterback of the last decade? Or did the Patriots win three Super Bowls because Bill Belichick secretly taped the defensive signals of the opposition?

You know
I don’t agree with Whitlock all the time. In fact, I rarely do. But I always respected his writing because he seems to put a lot of time and effort into it.
But this article is silly. He says this shouldn’t come off as whining but that’s exactly what it comes off as. He makes broad assumptions (like Pioli thinks secrecy is more important than talent) as the basis for his article.

Whining Witlock
It seems he is offended that the new front office isn’t going to let him run amok and stir up trouble in the press like he was allowed before. I admit I have not read the whole article because I’m boycotting Twitlock, He lost my respect years ago. I know his job is to provide commentary and to stir the pot, However I greatly dislike constantly negative people and that’s all he ever has been. In this post he has announced that no matter what the Chiefs do this year or any other year anything less that a super bowl win is grounds for him to bitch and whine that he did not have enough access to criticize the team in a way he thinks will stir up the fan base and case change. He is acting like a child, “they won’t let in on their secret plans so I’m going to make up nasty rumors to show them they should have let me in.” This may sound offensive to some and I do apologize but it sounds very much like the media and the viet nam war. The media demanded full access and got it, then ran the troops into the ground. Now the Front offices has gone to a more of a gulf war mentality and has told the media what they can and can not see so the troops can concentrate on their jobs instead of dealing with whatever the media comes up to throw at them. Whitlock hasd bought into the Al Davis plan, “Just whine baby, Whine.”

It's almost like being sad because your fat and then eating because you're sad...
That’s the relationship between talented successful football teams and media control. A concept furiatingly out of reach for our rotund scribe.
Also, as a side note, if Whitlock were critiquing his own columns with the same inflammatory baiting style he would’ve pulled the reverse racism card on his treatment of Vrabel by now. What the hell man? The guys a 12 year vet who skipped OTA’s and already he’s “a snitch” and “diminished in (intangible) value?” It’s June, and if anything Zach Thomas has been a journalist’s wet dream in that category (to the point of almost seeming suspiciously optimistic) which he completely ignores. For whatever reason Whitlock’s got a vendetta against Vrabel and really someone should light him up for it, if for nothing else than the whole “Five-O” line was one of the most ignorant literary abortions he’s ever asked us to read.

Vrabel's something tangible he can point at.
It doesn’t sound like there’s much else that is tangible. Maybe, like lowly Bob Gretz, he could actually do some reporting on 7-on-7 drills. Apparently the media aren’t denied access to what’s transpiring. Not much soap opera stuff. No 20-something young men being quizzed by 40-something media-types. It simply “is what it is.” Whatever you can make of how the players performed in practice is there for you to see. But talking-up players on the sideline and looking for soap opera material isn’t going to happen.
There’s NOTHING in the latest Whitlock article that doesn’t contain information freely available to the rest of us. He’s no more than just another blogger, now. I don’t know if it bothers him, or not, and frankly I don’t care, but until he does some legwork (and he’s PAID to do those sorts of things that we can only do in our SPARE time), he’s less informative than most of the bloggers HERE! One edge he still has on the rest of us is a platform that guarantees more people will read and comment on his material than an unpaid blogger.
Whitlock usually DID have his finger on something, for instance the way James Hasty and Neil Smith were punked by Peterson. I can see the same thing happening with other players, possibly, in the future, but I think the mental discipline and media discipline make it harder for the press to get their teeth into such stories, and, quite frankly, if Haley continues with a consistent tough-but-fair approach, there really won’t be much for the players to bitch about.

Whitlock is an idiot.
He is not a reporter but a writer. He never has anything important to say. All he does is bitch. He bitched about Peterson. Now he has to find something else negative to talk about. He is the guy we all know. You know him he is the guy who is negative about everything and always argues the opposite point of view just for the sake of arguing. The only reason I read his articles is to see what kind of fool he makes himself look like this time.

"The only reason I read his articles is to see what kind of fool he makes himself look like this time."
Which is why he is still employed by the Star… Whitlock sounds like a disgruntled blogger who wasnt allowed access because he doesnt have proper credentials, so he jumps on his blog and flames the front office.

It kinda does, tmt.
He is not a reporter but a writer.
If we keep that in perspective, no big deal. For all who are sick of Whitlock, though, the best way to fight him is to ignore him.

Amen
This is what I’ve been saying and doing and trying to get others to understand. If no one reads him The Star has no reason to pay him thus he either has to change his ways or his job. I honestly don’t want anyone to lose their job in these times but sometimes things happen for the better.
