VIDEO: Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley on the First Day of Mandatory Minicamp

No transcript yet but Haley did mention that the Kansas City Chiefs team as a whole has lost 338 pounds. He also mentioned that he wasn't surprised that Brian Waters or Mike Vrabel showed up.

Take a listen and let us know what you think. I'll post the transcript once it goes live.

Update: Here is the transcript.

338 pounds?

No wonder we’re so thin at NT

by KansasCityShuffle on Jun 5, 2009 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

He said an average we be around 150 lbs.

Does this mean that the players were more out of shape than average, or that we are looking for guys to be playing at a lighter weight. I would think maybe Hali and other guys moving to OLB would need to shed some pounds, but the D line may need to bulk up. Maybe it means nothing.

I took it as Haley's idea of in shape is more athletic

Someone wrote that when we played Arizona last year in preseason the Arizona looked more athletic and then preceded to BEAT us.

Good Listen. Here are acouple things I found interesting.

Favorite line: “I am not going to get along with everybody all the time. It is not in my personality”. Hilarious.

Coaches always talk about open competition and earning a starting spot, but for a change I really believe it. I think if you want to play for this team you will have to earn. No free rides anymore. It won’t matter igf you are 1st rounder or a rookie free agent. Let the best man win and that’s how it should be.

I also found it interesting that Haley said he was happy with the condition of Vrabel coming in to camp and that he understood what it takes, but that he thought Waters had some “work to do.”

It was funny.
I also found it interesting that Haley said he was happy with the condition of Vrabel coming in to camp and that he understood what it takes, but that he thought Waters had some "work to do."

But what really cracks me up is how he doesn’t give a shit about being their best friends. He tells it like it is. Waters is out of shape. Vrabel isn’t. It seems to go with Waters attitude though…

I know alot of people see Haley as arrogant...

But the more I see him, even though hes says something while saying nothing, the more I like him and his demeanor. I dont know if he’ll make a good coach or if I’m just so tired of seeing bad coaching that I want him to work but he really seems to have his shit together. Pardon the french theres just no other way to describe it.

Personally I love it and ...

if it translates into wins I will REALLY love it .. lol He signed on with a 2 win team so I am not realistically expecting any miracles (although I know they are possible) … I just like the new direction and attitude he and pioli are tryin to take this team. The Chiefs NEED a little arrogance and a take no crap attitude. I believe the word is “SWAGGER” .. the Vermeil Chiefs were warm and fuzzy and fun to watch … but I didn’t mind the punch you in the mouth Marty Chiefs either (see Oilers vs. KC playoffs) … We are now blessed with a great young offensive minded HC and a Creative OC … PLUS he has a TAKE NO CRAP attitude to boot!! I say we enjoy the combo of Vermeils creativity and Martys punch you in the mouth attitude ALL IN ONE COACH HALEY!! What we are blessed to watch is the START OF A DYNASTY DONE RIGHT BABY!!!

"even though I was born in Toronto Canada and I love the BlueJays and the Raptors and the Leafs .. I cut my finger this morning and I was BLEEDING KC RED BABY!!!"

I'm a little confused

about the whole weight loss bit. I thought stronger meant heavier, more muscle? According to Haley teams expect to lose weight?

He is definitely more comfortable talking to the press, no question…he’s talking so much faster than from some of the first PCs

I'm currently reading "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and it feels like we got ourselves a McMurphy on our hands....wheelin' and dealin'

remember

we had players in positions that weren’t natural for them. some players are not down to a weight class that better suits their body types too.

and yes, in the offseason players will gain weight, imagine all the food required to get a person through a football season. most keep eating the same when football is over so you expect a little weight gain.

I take this as a huge hit on herm and his conditioning of the players for the past two years, he was just to soft on them.

a bunch of of FORMER lardasses

I take it to mean they have dropped body fat and gotten into superb shape and condition. Every player I have heard interviewed has mentioned it in some way. I’d a lot rather have a 280 lb dude with awesome strength that can run for hours than a 290 lb guy who gets pushed around in the fourth quarter. I mean not that we ever got pushed around in the fourth quarter. I think we may be lighter but with more muscle.

by Zodeman on Jun 5, 2009 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really think he is trying to trim them down too much..

It seems like they are trying to condition the players so they don’t run out of gas in the 4th qtr. I also dont think it hurts anyone on the line to trim up. If they are stronger than they were before and a little quicker too, that can’t hurt.

His Press Conferences are getting hilarious to me...

Q: Do you think it’s hot outside?
A: (Haley): I’m not going to comment on it at this time. The weather is here, and it wants to be a Chief. That’s all I can say about it. I’m not going to discuss conversations between me and the weather….

About the weight loss...

It’s only an average of about 4lbs per person on the roster. I’m sure it’s just a combination of off-season body fat and DEs moving to OLBs. The weight gain will likely come as the summer progresses.

Guess you didn't get the Memo...

Price Chopper is no longer a supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dustin Colquitt said that he was 5 lbs under what he would like to be at, and that he would like to gain more muscle mass in his leg. So you are spot on LTownChiefsFan
