That mix of styles would be even better if Smith can return this season. Johnson provides the power and Charles has the speed. What the Chiefs need is Smith and his darting style, the ability to plant and go, to change direction on a dime.
They also need his ability to catch the ball; among the available backs he’s the best pass catcher with 32 catches in 23 games, for an average of 6.3 yards per catch.

interesting
I had forgotten about that injury…
Assuming he starts the season on the PUP list, J. Williams and/or J. Battle will be in the mix this season for sure.
And, it might open the door for another veteran signing before training camp, if Kolby isn’t ready to go.
Shouldn't be on the PUP list
Assuming he’s ready by training camp. PUP list would keep him out until week 8 I think.

kolby's solid
put up decent numbers in the same crap offense that saw LJ put up decent numbers, and I think he catches ze ball better, as indicated.
more interested in the Ellis section of the article, though. rent a pass rusher for a couple seasons?
He's always seemed to me ...
… like he had the potential to be another Priest Holmes.
He does, as mentioned, have the ability to plant and go. He does have the ability to catch the ball. He just needs to do it.
Seemed to me that he
HAS potential to be another Priest. Kolby is a tough dude. IMO he will be ready to go by preseason and will step it up.
I posted this over at bgretz's website:
Um, Bob? Kolby Smith is terrible. He is not the best receiver out of the backfield. Jamaal Charles is much better. Take another look at the numbers:
Kolby – 32 receptions – 200 yards – 6.3 ypc
Charles – 27 receptions – 272 yards – 10.1 ypc
So Charles not only has many more yards, but he’s done it in only one season with less receptions. Jamaal Charles should be the main target out of the backfield. He is a screen machine.
Nearly a third
of Charles’s receiving yards come from one catch. I’m not saying take it out, but take it into consideration before you call Smith “terrible.”
I don’t think Smith has been given enough of a chance to call him terrible.
Kolby Smith when healthy
can put up just as good of numbers as Michael Bush… if not better. The big thing is can he stay healthy.
That's been the problem
He’s been hurt in his two seasons with us so far and is starting off hurt right now. I like Smith and think he has the potential to be a valuable player, but only if he can play.
I am loving all the possibility's
We have talent so if the players step up and I think they will with the coaching we have now, we have options with our QB’s, RB’s and the defense could surprise a lot of people. and if we could do something more with the O-line this could be the start of some great times in KC.

It's a positive on a team full of unknowns.
This is a position where all of the sudden, if LJ keeps his head on straight and buys in, we are very deep and talented. Considering how many “holes” this team is perceived to have its nice to have a few positions like RB and DB and QB where we are pretty deep with skilled players.
I have a feeling Kolby will be cut by the start of the season.
He hasn’t really done much since that Oakland game in 2007.
LJ>Charles>Williams>Savage… Battle and Smith will probably both be cut.
Savage
will be cut. IMO. Smith is better than him.
We still don’t dont what Williams can do, so maybe Smith will be 3rd and Williams 4th.
Savage I see as a backup for Charles as the speed back
And then Williams as the backup for LJ as a power back. But that’s just my opinion.
It will be a Savage Battle when King Charles and Williams of Orange face of
in the fields of Kolby-Smith, and Larry will bring his Johnson and Spit in their general direction :)
