Right now, I am very concerned that Cassel's lack of a supporting cast is going to make him a scapegoat for yet another losing season. As we saw with QBs like Joey Harrington, sometimes QBs can never quite regain confidence once it's lost.

This is why
trading Gonzalez was retarded. Sure, we got a 2nd rounder, but no matter who we spend that pick on he will not be as valuable to Cassel in our offense as much as Gonzo would have been
by KansasCityShuffle on Jun 27, 2009 12:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, pretty much
Its even worse when you realize that 2nd rounder isn’t coming until next year and will probably be at the bottom of the 2nd round. The Pioli mafia gave him away.
Having said that, I think the guy who wrote the article just wanted to get all his end-of-the-year excuses in writing before anybody else.
Apparently he doesn’t read Arrowhead Pride.

The trade for Gonzo is very good value...
Considering during the season Peterson confirmed he only received an offer for a 4th rounder. I’d expect the pick to be somewhere simillar to where Atlanta picked this year and actually a 2nd rounder in next years draft will likely be the equivilant to 1st round talent from this last draft considering how deep the 2010 draft is slated to be. Have to remember too that Pioli can parlay that pick into a roster player too just as he did with Cassel/Vrabel this offseason or into a 2011 1st rounder even if theres a deal out there next draft simillar to what the Seahawks and Broncos did. It’s too early to say we gave him away just yet.

Completely different
Joey moneybags came in as a rookie, Cassel’s already been established so his confidence is already there unlike Mr. Harrington. And you people keep sleepin on who we got now. Bradley was huge for us last year. Him, Bowe n Engram aren’t scrubs. And trading Gonzo wasnt retarded it was needed. We have a QB that completes passes to whoevers OPEN, not whos names on the back of the jersey. Like I said before and Ill keep saying it 7-8 of our losses came by 7 points or less. Thats called BAD coaching! Chan Gailey was an absolute stud last year for usand now we have another offensive/matchup minded guy comin in to help the offense out. I know theres not alot of news but damn, you don’t put a guy whos actually WON in the league compared to Joey Harrington. 2 Completely different situations. 9-7 / 10-6 AFC West Champs mark it down!!

I realize
I realize that a lot of you think Cassel is the next coming of Joe Montana, but lets see what he can do in this offense before we get ourselves built up to be let down. If he doesn’t perform well, fans will be chanting for Thigpen, Trent Green’s first year in KC a lot of us were yelling for Jonathan Quinn, or Todd Collins and one of them might have performed better that first year, but Green panned out in a great way, almost as well as Montana. Grbac outperformed Bono, Gannon outperformed Grbac, look how all of that turned out, we might have made a superbowl under Gannon. I wish Cassel the best, but lets see how he performs with this offense before we start screaming how great he is. A solid qb hopefully, but he’s not even Eli Manning yet.

this is retarded
Harrington couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn half the time. One of the most inaccurate quarterbacks I’ve ever seen in the NFL.

another fine example
Of why I prefer to stick to AP when it involves the Chiefs. He does have a valid point about fans having no patience. Thankfully the fans are not the ones hiring and firing the GM. We now have the right GM who is building for the future. I sure do hope we win this year and I think we will be considerably better. But I will trust the to the judgement of Pioli/Haley as to whether or not we have the pieces around him. Pioli probably did get the memo this clown is talking about and used it for the toilet paper it is.
You are not what you think you are, but WHAT you think, you ARE.

KC is no different
than any other city when it comes to the backup QB. Any team that does not have a winning QB has to deal with the fans wanting to put somebody else in the game. We want the team to win as much as the team does. Cassel has shown he can win games, but has to show he can do it for KC before his job is safe.

even though i somewhat agree
can I just say screw this guy! patience? We have won close to 0 games in two seasons watched as we trade away icons of the game Jared Allen and Tony G we haven’t won a playoff game since last time I watched who’s the boss and still I come to this site 5 times a day just to check the news. I watch every game I can not go to til the games over even if we are down 35-3 so in my mind I think we all have quite a bit of patience. It’s about time that patience paid off I think, if you want to talk about an impatient fanbase go talk to philly.

Gotta love the thought
Cassel will be fine. It may be rough during the pre-season. No surprise there.
Yeah he does’nt come in KC with a pedigree, we can’t believe he’s worth 14 mil. He’s not a proven QB. Thigpen did a good job with what we had. O-line sucks, how can he be better here than in New England… Yata Yata Yata…
Cassel has the instincts, skills & talent to be a top 5 QB in this league. Scott Pioli thinks so, Josh Mcdaniels thinks so. I think Bill Belichek (sp) thinks so, heck, Matt was offered a ton of money. All that tells me is to hang on & enjoy the ride. If our o-line improves 30% this year, LJ stays healthy, both physically & mentally & D Bowe gets rid of the “dropsys”. I think Cassel can do some serious damage to some pretty good defenses. I’m already convinced the D will be better. We have a coaching staff right now that will not tolerate wimps, weinies or guys out of shape. We will be stronger, faster, leaner and a whole lot smarter than years past.
I say, You gotta Love the thought.

Cassel isn't the only one in the backfield
I think Larry Johnson will be a monster this year and return to his 2005-2006 form. He’s got something to prove again and we all remember the way he plays when he is angry. Harrington never had a run game to save his ass

Hate to say it.
So yeah, I’m a Cassel fan before anything. I was a Patriots fan, but now I’m a Chiefs fan casue he got traded. And I hate to say it but if the Chiefs aren’t going to give Matt any wepons to work with, I want him to not sign any contract and just wait it out until Free agency in 2010. (Please don’t get mad at me, I just want what’s best for my QB.)

No reason to believe
we won’t get him some weapons to work with. This offseason we had to address our atrocious defense before anything else (see our draft results). I think in next year’s draft we will likely take a stud MLB in the first round (there are a few coming out I believe), but will look to upgrade our offensive weapons with our two second rounders and in the third. We are going to build a team around Cassel. This year won’t be a perfect situation for him (lack of receiving options), but if he stays put, we will give him the weapons he needs to succeed.
P.S. Even if you’re just following Cassel, glad to have one more Chiefs fan. Welcome!

I hope so.
You’re probably right. But I just don’t want Cassel to get booed off the field. and for everyone to chat. “Thigpen, Thigpen, Thigpen!” :-\

Hey guys
I’m glad AP still found my article after I took a few months off! I’m glad it’s generating some strong responses.
For the record, I am a big fan of Cassel. I think he has the tools and the work ethic to be a very good QB. Having said that, I was one fan that was appalled when I saw Trent Green booed after a few bad games after coming back from his head injury. It was one of the few times I was embarrassed to call myself a fan. Chiefs’ fans have become increasingly impatient and I can’t help but wonder how Cassel will respond if the fans and media turn on him, as they did on Green his first season with the Chiefs. Sometimes, when QBs become unpopular, they press too hard and start thinking too much out there.
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid I’m not. Cassel deserves every last ounce of patience, but he likely won’t get it. The fans on this site are intelligent, but you don’t represent the majority. The Chiefs probably won’t be great right away (as is expected during a rebuild), and it’s sad to say, but it’s very likely that Cassel will be scapegoated for it. Again, I hope I’m wrong.

Sh!
Don’t you dare use that rebuild word around here.
Cassel will do just fine with Bowe Engram and Bradley this year, especially if LJ can take the pressure off (seems to be the biggest link missing from your argument). I would like another WR acquisition though.

Hey Jux, there’s some truth to that, but it’s a big “if.” My biggest concern again goes back to the offensive line. The Chiefs had to resort to a shotgun spread last year largely because an under-center offense got Croyle and Huard killed. The Chiefs’ #1 priority has to be to make sure Cassel doesn’t get killed behind our offensive line, and I’m not sure that the Chiefs improved on the offensive line enough to give Gailey the confidence to go back to more under-center plays.
Because of the state of our o-line, I think we’re going to again have to resort to the shotgun spread. In that offense, LJ is much less effective, because he is forced to burst out of a handoff as opposed to getting a running start (hence, the use of the “pistol” last year). It also demands that you have a few elite receivers, something the Pats and the Cards had, which made it easier to run a shotgun offense.
It’s clear Pioli prioritized defense over offense, and I think that’s great. I just hope the fans are willing to accept the fact that the offense and Cassel are probably going to go through some lumps in 2009.

I am expecting a bumpy ride.
But I think our O-Line will be much improved this year. Goff may not be the most elite line player, but he is really going to help out that side by ACTUALLY doing his job. He is a solid prospect, and even more importantly, he was working his ass off in OTAs.
Also don’t forget about Bill Muir. The guy is a guru.

I think Cassel and the offense is going to be just fine.
We have some good heads (offensively speaking) amongst the coaching staff. My biggest concern is that our lack of receiving talent may bite us in the rear at some point. Maybe some of the young guys can step it up, but I wish we had made a move on a wide receiver in free agency.
