That they signed Brown would appear to indicate they are looking for somebody to push the starters at safety, Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard. It would also appear that they don’t believe Jon McGraw and DaJuan Morgan are capable of pushing Page and Pollard.
Without a big training camp and pre-season, Morgan figures to be another one of those ‘08 draft choices who will be sent packing. McGraw’s contributions on special teams cannot be ignored and that gives him an edge in any battle for a roster spot.

That's The Way I See It
I think McGraw sticks on the merits of his special teams play and Morgan goes away. The guy was barely noticeable last season.
That ’08 draft class is not looking particularly great one year later.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.

but still
Even if Morgan is gone we got:
Glen Dorsey, Brandon Albert, Brandon Albert, Jamaal Charles, Brad Cottam, Brandon Carr as starters. It is way too early even yet to truly grade the draft, and some of these guys may not make it in the long run. But I think any GM would be happy to have a draft that turned out six starters (well at least 5—Cottam is not a given yet).

Remember
that Morgan, like Pollard, was “younger” football-wise than others in the same draft class.
Pollard played mostly special teams in 2006, and if it weren’t for the blocked punts (something that was a specialty of sorts in college), he would have been “barely noticeable” his rookie season as well.
And actually, I don’t think the Cover 2 ever gave us the opportunity to see Pollard anywhere near his potential. He’s just not a Cover 2 safety, period.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

It's A Good Point About Pollard
But what did Morgan really do last year to distinguish himself on special teams? He was basically a non-entity.

Agreed About Pollard Not Being Cover-2
I think he’s actually done a good job so far…he’s got holes in his game but he appears to work hard every offseason to address those. And he was one of the few players willing to step up and take responsibility for the team’s performance last season.

Yes I like Pollard
my point was, apart from the blocked punts (for which he had a preexisting “knack”), what did Pollard do to distinguish himself on special teams in 2006?
I’m not saying that Morgan is going to turn into anything special, just that given his rawness, I’d hate to see us dismiss him too soon (as we might have done with Pollard had his punt blocking skills not been displayed)
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

3rd Rounder, I Believe
I think he was one of the picks from the Jared Allen trade.
I recognize that Morgan is young, but by the same token what did he do to distinguish himself? Pollard blocked punts in 2006…that’s how he distinguished himself. McGraw stood up on ST last year and made people take notice. If you really think back on it, how many plays do you remember Morgan being a part of last year? Did he do anything to set himself apart from the other warm bodies on special teams?
I’m asking seriously…because I can’t even recall one play he was involved in where he did anything exceptional. I put him in about the same category I do Will Franklin.

according to the mothership
Saw action in 15 games on special teams and 10 contests on defense … Was inactive for one game … Had 19 tackles (16 solo) with one for loss and 10 special teams stops … Totaled a career-high six tackles with one for loss at Carolina (10/5) … Posted three tackles and two special teams stops vs. Tennessee (10/19) … Was inactive with a thigh injury at San Diego (11/9) … Tallied three tackles vs. New Orleans (11/16) … Collected four tackles vs. Buffalo (11/23) … Accumulated two special teams stops at Oakland (11/30).
This is what they list in his bio.
by Zodeman on Jun 25, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
compare that to what they have for McGraw from last year
2008: Played in 16 games on special teams and in 15 contests on defense … Registered 27 tackles (24 solo), an INT and a pass defensed … Led the team with a career-high 23 special teams stops and also forced a fumble on a kickoff return … Added one kickoff return for 18 yards … Recorded one tackle and one special teams stop at New England (9/7) and vs. Oakland (9/14) … Tallied one tackle and two special teams stops at Atlanta (9/21) and vs. Denver (9/28) … Posted one tackle on defense and special teams at Carolina (10/5) and vs. Tennessee (10/19) … Registered four tackles at the N.Y. Jets (10/26) … Notched four special teams tackles vs. Tampa Bay (11/2) … Tied a career high with 10 tackles, recorded an interception off Philip Rivers and added a pass defensed at San Diego (11/9). Also had two special teams stops and forced a CB Antonio Cromartie fumble on a kickoff return … Produced four tackles and one special teams stop vs. New Orleans (11/16) … Recorded one special teams stop vs. Buffalo (11/23) … Totaled one special teams stop at Oakland (11/30) and at Denver (12/7) … Amassed one tackle and three special teams stops vs. San Diego (12/14) … Totaled two tackles and two stops on special teams vs. Miami (12/21) … Had one kickoff return for 18 yards at Cincinnati (12/28).
Looks like a lot more production out of McGraw. I’m pretty sure the special teams play will keep McGraw around. We’ll have to see what happens in camp.
by Zodeman on Jun 25, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
One thing to think about if we're looking at it in terms of production
McGraw has just a few years of production left, so even if he had more (27) special teams tackles, he’ll be done soon.
Morgan had 19 special teams tackles, but was a rookie, and may have many more years of around 20 special teams tackles (though hopefully he would improve)
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

DeJuan should have stayed in college one more year
He came out after playing safety in college for one season, so he basically had no idea how to play the position. That added to the fact that a lot of players who come out early aren’t mature enough for the NFL, spells disaster. Another year to learn and grow in college would have done Morgan a world of good. Now he’s looking at getting cut after one year of doing nothing with his talents. Good call on his part.

Yes
I just read his bio on the NC State and Chiefs websites, and to be honest…not that impressive. Kind of wonder about him even being a 3rd round pick. In terms of who has actually produced as a player, looks to me like McGraw has the edge. Walked on at K State and worked his way into the starting lineup. That says something about work ethic and drive. If I had to place a bet I would put money on McGraw sticking before Morgan. But maybe McGraw can show some leadership and show him how to sack groceries. :-)

Valid Points
If we end up with Dorsey, Albert, Flowers, Carr and Charles as decent starters, it’ll be a good draft class but not, in my opinion, a great one considering how many picks we had that year. The only way it looks great is if you compare it to the 1-2 decent players per year that Carl Peterson got out of most of his other draft classes.

Peterson had a terrible record
At least Herm got him to draft some players that are still around and have potential to be good—now that we have some real coaches. Plus last year we picked up a couple of good players in UDFA. I guess I’ll just sit back and wait to see how things play out over the next couple of years. Pioli will be doing a lot of evaluating this year, and if he doesn’t like what the old regime left him after giving them a chance this year I predict next offseason to be VERY active in FA. But my hope is the foundation is laid and we can just build an impressive Red and Gold mansion on it.

I'm Not Sure About The Ones Who Are Left From Herm's Drafts
Pollard and Page look to be the only NFL-caliber players from the 2006 draft class. Bowe so far appears to be the only good starter from 2007 (although Tyler may be better in the new D…but I’m still skeptical). 2008 is a solid draft class but we need another year before we have enough time to properly evaluate it.

Were pretty similar to the ones from the draft classes before it. You could generally count on him for 1-2 players per year, meaning in 5-11 years he might find enough players to fill half a starting lineup. :)

He was actually my first ban on the site and hopefully he’ll be my last. I’m extremely pro-free speech and I don’t like banning people if it’s avoidable. But I think he’d pretty much exceeded all reasonable standards for behavior, keeping in mind this site’s nature and the level of discussion we usually engage in. It looked like he was getting to the point where regulars were not wanting to participate in the threads anymore and that’s unacceptable.

Good info on Morgan

MORGAN: "I love special teams – I think it’s the most important aspect of the game because it changes any moment
Kansas City Head Coach Herm Edwards
"He’s a versatile guy. He’s an excellent special teams player. Very good on special teams. Very athletic with great hand-eye coordination. Good interceptor and vicious tackler. You watch him on tape he’s a torpedo. He’s a football player.
Assuming this is still the scouting report on Morgan… he’s likely to stay on the roster, with McGraw getting cut. Morgan can be both a special teams stud and a regular contributor on defense… given time to develop…. In my humble opinion, of course

We're acting like McGraw is a special teams hero
Being that we were tied for 2nd worst team in the league last year, you wouldn’t have to be that great of a football player to be a special teams “ace” on the Chiefs. I think its a calculated risk keeping Morgan who could turn out to be very good whereas with McGraw we already know what he brings to the table. That’s a safety who we never want on the field other than during punts & kickoffs. Which is not my idea of a second string FS
Simply, McGraw’s special team production can be replaced. Let’s give Morgan one more year before we decide to send his ass packing, Willie Franks style

I Agree McGraw's Not All That
I’m just saying that Morgan didn’t do anything last year to make himself stand out and frankly didn’t give us much reason to think he’s going to be much better than what he showed. He was a solid college safety and an underwhelming NFL player last year…there are a lot of those guys around.
I do think that he’s still eligible for the practice squad this year though and I could see him ending up there.

The Draft Position
Really only matters the year the player’s drafted. If a player isn’t cutting it and isn’t good enough to make a roster, there’s really no reason not to put him on the practice squad if he’s eligible. Especially when that player was drafted by a different GM than the guy currently in charge.

if Herm found a DB starter in the 7th round I was relying on him to find equally as good talent or better in the 3rd round. What Herm looks for in his backs is probably a lot different than what Pioli looks for though so it seems more likely he’ll be cut. It just sucks is all

That's A Big Assumption
Which Tamba Hali alone should probably dispel. Herm and Carl got extremely lucky with Page. But generally talent scouts who get 1-2 players out of each draft really aren’t very good talent scouts so it’s probably safer to assume that when the players they drafted aren’t producing it’s probably because they aren’t that good rather than that they’re just underappreciated.

Back to this argument
Tamba Hali is good, bro. He’s not great and was a reach when we drafted him, yes, but he’s still a good football player. He was the best pass rusher out of his class. He’s not a RDE, wasn’t drafted to be, but what really can you expect from a LDE in a 4-3 base scheme? It’s centered around having a pass rushing threat @ RDE and whatsever on the left is just a complimentary. We had a good formula with Allen & Hali and once Allen was removed from the equation Hali’s game suffered. If Hali makes the transition to the 3-4 which I was widely expecting him not to, then he will prove not only to you but a lot of others he’s a damn good ball player

You're wrong
Tamba Hali cuts it as a LDE in a 4-3 scheme, period.

With Jared Allen: Just Under 8 Sacks Per Year
Without Jared Allen: 3 sacks
His tackle and tackle for loss numbers have both moved backwards every year since his rookie season and last year he was clearly overmatched playing against even backup tackles. Simply put, he’s a serviceable end if you put an all-world DE opposite him but a fringe player if he doesn’t have a superstar to take attention away from him. That means he’s not really cutting it.

I think he didn't record his first sack
last year until they moved him back to LDE. That was late in the season and he recorded 3 sacks after that. Had he played LDE all season, he likely could have registered around 7 or 8 sacks. Does that make him good? Heck no. But it does support Shuffle’s statement that Hali cuts it as an LDE.

I think this is the end of the road for McGraw
Of the five safeties on the roster i think Mcgraw is the weakest one of them.
I have to think they will give Morgan a year to figure this stuff out, and then carry Mike Brown into the season as a starter/first sub.

I remember a game
where McGraw completley whiffed on a Special teams tackle. I cant remember the exact game but I do remember being like WTF?!? Id rather have a guy with some “upside” than Mcgraw. While I am a KSU fan and i like Mcgraw because of that, I am a Chiefs fan first and foremost and i think its time for him to be bagging groceries. While were at it, lets send Sackintosh with him, he should excell at sacking groceries, unless he eats them all first.
Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

I think alot of people are putting too much emotion into this....
I know alot of us like a player who is a “project” and to me that is Morgan. If I remember right, the knock on him coming out was that he wasn’t very fluid in his motion but that the potential was there for him to become a decent safety or even a CB. He is one of those “risk” picks, a bang or a bust, he has the “potential” to be good/great and the “potenial” to be average at best. To date he has been average at best. Given the choice between an average special teams player and a proven special teams leader, I will take McGraw.

I Think That's About Right
Which one we’re hoping the Chiefs choose is really a matter of preference…I can understand wanting to keep Morgan too and there are good reasons to want to do so. I just won’t be bothered if he gets the axe and based on the direction the Chiefs have gone this offseason I think McGraw gets the nod over him.

Yeah, but to be fair I should have also said that it is a little early to judge Morgan at this point.
He is still pretty young and hasn’t had enough time to really find himself in the pro game, so I cut him some slack. I just think McGraw gives us a better player on special teams and the fact that neither player is sniffing a regular job on the field, you have to take the best player for the job they WILL be doing. Right now that is McGraw.

Completely Agree
That’s part of why I think Morgan would be better served on our practice squad this year. I don’t think he’ll be a serious challenge to either Page or Pollard and isn’t really being groomed for a starting spot, so all things considered I’d rather have McGraw out there than Morgan since McGraw is likely to contribute more this year.

Morgan will have to have a good preseason
I think McGraw will have more leeway due to proven performance. Morgan is going to really have to show something. Since we are so deep at the corner position, it will be hard to stay deep here too.
