Matt Cassel: The Next Trent Green

(Click here for the original article, posted on Bleacher Report)

Scott Pioli thinks Matt Cassel is a franchise quarterback.

Josh McDaniels seems to think Matt Cassel is enough of a franchise quarterback to drive away the one he already had.

So what exactly can we expect from Matt Cassel?

Star-divide

Even with all of the similarities to Tom Brady<—he was drafted late, has been allowed to sit and develop, and taught by a very good QB (Brady by Drew Bledsoe and now Cassel by Brady)—Cassel will almost certainly not become another three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback.

I think the best comparison for Matt Cassel is someone who Chiefs fans have been quite familiar with: Trent Green, another former late round draft pick.

I mean no disrespect by this, as Trent Green was a great quarterback here in KC for quite some time. In fact no QB threw for more yards than he did between 2003 and 2005, not even Peyton Manning.

The key to Green's success will be the same as Cassel's, and its this—the system. It is all about making the right reads and making accurate throws.

The similarities between Cassel and Green are striking actually, both statistically speaking and in the way they play the game.

Cassel threw for 3693 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year, and in Green's first year as a starter he threw for 3441 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Cassel completed about 63% of his passes last year, and Trent completed about 62% of his passes during his time in KC.

Neither Cassel or Green have a particularly strong arm, and throwing the deep ball is a little iffy sometimes, but it was the short to mid-range throws where Green excelled.

Trent Green worked very hard in the film room before games, and Matt Cassel is the same type of guy.

"When [Matt] is done working out he's upstairs bugging us," head coach Todd Haley said. "He's making drawings, coming up with ideas, wanting to talk football all the time."

This is the kind of hard worker I want at quarterback; he's a very heady player who puts in his due diligence in the film room. There is nothing you can do to better your team's chances before a game than to be prepared, and it is clear that Matt Cassel will be doing just that.

Putting in the overtime hours with an offensive guru like Todd Haley will only improve his game and understanding of the offense scheme.

He's already shown the necessary leadership in New England last year, and displayed his natural passing ability while throwing for 400 yards in back-to-back games.

Now for Cassel to be successful in Kansas City, he doesn't need to be the next Len Dawson, or Tom Brady, and he doesn't need to be a "franchise quarterback. All he needs to do is work hard and play smart; that's the recipe for being a good quarterback in this league.

Better than Green

I’m going to go with Mitch Holtus’ analysis on the Red Zone before the draft. His comment was that Green was a great system QB, but when you needed a play at the end of the game to win, he really wasn’t the man. Holtus feels that Cassel IS that kind of guy that can make a play. I’m ready for the season to begin.

Every team has an offensive system...

If a QB can learn one system, he can learn another one too. I don’t think “system QB” should even be part of the language we use. It is overstating the obvious.

But some fit better than others

The problem with some quaterbacks, is they simply don’t fit a particular system or style of play. If you put Chad Pennington in Arizona and ran the same plays, he would fail miserably. Why? Because that offensive system is built on throwing the ball downfield to the playmakers. Pennington doesn’t have the arm for that and would immediately fail. Now put Pennington in a situation that is conducive to his strengths like Miami runs, where there are lots of short, accurate passes, then he has a great year like he did with them.

“System QB” may be an overused statement, just like “franchise QB”, but it doesn’t make the risk of simply having a “system qb” any less. You must call plays that fit your player’s strengths, not try to fit players into your system.

Why do you think Thigpen was so successful last year? Bc we basically were running a College-Style offense with him at the helm. He only had to read one side of the field, as to simplify the reads, and he was playing out of the shotgun to make the reads even easier, because it is harder to read the defense while you are dropping back, as opposed to already standing back there looking at them. Not only this, but there were very limited throws downfield, because his deep pass was fairly erratic. Instead they threw it short to Tony G and slant and crossing patters to DBowe across the middle of the field because those are the easiest throws to make.

San Fran........

Back when the great J.Montana was running it could nickel and dime ya, or throw it deep. It was pretty much unstoppable, i might darn to say. I have always loved the West Coast offense, because it was so affective, and exciting to watch. T.Green was a good QB, not only because of the “System”, but because our O-line was great. IMO our o-line carried this team for years and we all got spoiled.

Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

Damn,

negative 1? Don’t think I’ve seen that one used, lol!

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

You can't copy

whole articles and paste them here. That is what’s called plagarism, and can get the owners of the blog in trouble.

It's my article

It’s MY article that I copied and pasted here. I’m pretty sure that’s called getting exposure.

Is it owned by you

or Bleacher Report? Because if it’s they own all articles published it doesn’t matter. They’re the copyright holder, not you.

In any case, there was NO mention of it being a piece you wrote. If you want exposure, why not just summarize and link to the site that published your article to get THEM exposure since they believe in you enough to publish your work.

Good work though, it was enjoyable to read.
