IF HERM WAS STILL HERE WOULD THIS OF BEEN HIS YEAR?

Herm was supposedly supposed to bring this team to the playoffs in year three of the rebuild. Does anyone think he might of actually done that or is he really just not a good head coach? I don't know if they dumped him to early. I know he said it would take three years, but damn, last year was just a disaster. At least the offense made it some what entertaining for some of the middle season and a few later games, but all around bad performance for a pro team. Did Herm get ousted to quick or not. My opinion is no. He needs to never be more than a coordinator or scout if he every leaves the broadcast booth.

The Herm Experiment

Should have gone youth movement his first year. Things were bad when he got here, and just got worse. He left us with a lot of good young talent, but he was not the coach to make something happen with it. Thank goodness we aborted that Downs Syndrome two-headed three-legged baby before it was too late.

Herm should never have been hired.

The Chiefs lost out on three years of improvement while Herm’s pathetic attempt at being a head coach marched us backwards rather than forwards. The last 25 starts the Chiefs had two wins. 25 games……….2 wins!!!!! That is absolutely, totally, abysmally, inexcusable. Never in my life have I seen a coach so totally devoid of even the remotest idea of how to run a football team.

Herm sucked

I keep hear people say he left us with talent well thats not hard to do when your team sucks so bad keep getting to pick at the top of every round of the draft. Oh and trading away one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. 10 sack season. we did get a good DB from that trade but good DB’s are easier to find than a guy that can get 15 sacks a year

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Maybe

he thought he was playing madden football………… hell i do it all the time, to get better picks when i first get a team. I thought Herm was going to be a good coach but……… boy was i wrong! He showed no emotion, no coaching skills when it came to changing things up in the second half, and he would not pass on first down. Damnit he pissed me off in some many games i cant count them. J.Allen had some problems with the booze, and probably wouldnt have been the type of player “The DON” would have kept on the team anyways. After this year i dont think you’ll be thinking to much about losing him anyways.

by CPT.Caveman on Jun 24, 2009 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And where does Jared Allen fit in a 3-4?

He’d have to lose weight and make the transition to OLB just like Hali and McBride…

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

If Herm was here

We would have drafted Aaron Curry #1, second round we would have probably taken Everette Brown, and third round we would have taken Michael Johnson.

Tony Gonzalez would have not been traded

Off-season acquisitions would have been names like Cato June

hmmm

that’s not sounding that bad to me…

by stagdsp on Jun 24, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe....

But we’d also be running the ball 50 times a game, Brodie Croyle would be getting “one last chance” to stay on the field for longer than 3minutes and 12 seconds before an injury, the 4-3 Tampa 2 would be alive and well, Gunny would still be the D-coor, and we would not have a new OL coach.

If Brodie were a race horse we would have already put him down. Call it a toss up. Herm had 3 years to win and he failed impressively.

Yes........

That would have been ok with me and even sounds good. My boy T.Thigpen would be starting and growing as a NFL QB, and who knows maybe could have took this team to the playoffs or more next year, if givin the chance to improve. That being said Herms not here and Bones is not our starting QB, so if i had to choose between what we had then or what we have know, i’ll take “The Don” T.Haley, and M.Cassell
P.S Sorry Bones.

To be fair...

I think Herm and Co. did a good job of drafting, but didn’t get them up to speed quick enough.
He also had some failings managing the game.

I think the 2009 Chiefs will reap a lot of benefits from the past couple years…
they have a TON of young talent with more experience than any other group of 2nd/3rd year players.

Just have to turn the L’s into W’s

by stagdsp on Jun 24, 2009 3:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not in his 1st year - Hali???

Herm’s 2006 1st Round Pick – Big question mark still

Tamba Hali (20th overall)

Could have had:

DeMeco Ryans LB (33rd overall)
Nick Mangold C (29th overall)
D’Qwell Jackson LB (34th overall)
Greg Jennings WR (52nd overall)

by 58 was my friend on Jun 25, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh wait

2007 5th Round Pick
Justin Medlock K WTF!!!!

by 58 was my friend on Jun 25, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Picking one of two kickers is a crap shoot

so I don’t hold that against him – Medlock had the better accuracy and poise in college…no one could have known he would go all retarted in the pros.

And Frankly, Ryans is the only person on that list I would have picked rather than Hali…

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I actually liked Herm

He gets a pretty bad rap around here. Yes, his record speaks for itself so I can’t defend that. But I think that this year would have been much better. Not that it could have been much worse than the previous 2. But I would have liked to see him get his full chance at rebuilding.

That being said, I’m satisfied with where we are as a team now, with all of the changes that have been made. I just wouldn’t have objected so much to Herm gettnig his 3rd year as most of you guys seem to.

by Tadpui on Jun 24, 2009 5:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm curious

What positives did Herm display that makes you want to give him a 3rd year?

"...Said he couldn't go on the American way"

by Jux on Jun 24, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he did get three years

but only in truth one in total rebuild

by Zodeman on Jun 24, 2009 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree as well...

Call me crazy, but I think Herm got the raw end of the deal. I think in two years we are going to be reaping the benefits of his drafts and his brave plunge into the uncertain waters of “rebuilding.” He did make some questionable decisions, however I feel it took a lot of guts to do what he did, and he succeeded in getting young talent here.

Were are going to be reaping the benefits of Pioli

bringing in a few key vets to teach all the rookies and a head coach to show them how to win games. Herm couldn’t coach a pee-wee football team.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Jun 24, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He got the raw end... TRUE BUT

I read somewhere when your HC spends more time entertaining the press and seen all over TV and is always camera – friendly, tells you one thing – HE IS NOT SPENDING enough time coaching and not with the team.

hence – We Play To Win The Game!

Herm's teams were fat and out of shape!

How can anybody defend the guy! It’s simply embarrassing that a professional sports franchise was losing games in the second half because of a lack of conditioning. A decent high school coach would know better than that.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

3rd year

I agree with Tad…I should have gotten his third year. Now we have Haley, who has never been a Head Coach. Herm had a vision and followed through, and I think he deserved another year. The real problem was Peterson and I think we all know that.

-Robbie

by Chiefsfan2012 on Jun 24, 2009 5:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Peterson

Was a huge problem. Very true, that’s why we lost Allen.

But Herm was an even bigger problem. At least Peterson had some success with other coaches. Herm was/is/never will be capabale of being a head coach. It’s a classic example of being promoted beyond your ability.

I’m not knocking him completely. He seems like a great person and is definitely a master when it comes to the secondary. Other than that…

Here are his biggest failings IMO:

1. Took a bad gamble on all the youth. You can’t run a “college team”, as he himself put it, in the NFL.

2. Played too soft. Way WAY too conservative. It’s like he tried to let the other team back into the game once we had the lead because he felt bad for them! Once we had our biggest lead in the SD game last year I told my buddy “Herm will find a way to screw this up”. Lo and behold…

3. Obviously was too soft on the players. He let a losing culture develop and flourish. Now we see better than ever how he didn’t ride them to be conditioned which certainly contributed to the 4th quarter breakdowns.

4. Bad in-game decisions. Always calling time outs, challenging, or choosing to punt at the wrong times. Absolutely sickening.

5. Scheme stubborness. You saw what happened when he finally handed the offense over to Gailey. Everything before that was trash, and Herm just would not give it up because that’s what he wanted his team to be. The defense is an even better example. Obviously they sucked it up last year. Obviously Gun wasn’t a cover 2 coach. So what should you do? Back off the Goddamn cover 2 and let him try something to get some results like the offense instead of trying to be Tony Dungy Jr!!!!!!

I don’t care how many years we gave Herm. It would have always been a train wreck unless he could change the above things.

Sorry about the rant. That’s all I’ve got and I’m not coming back to it.

True PROBLEM - Scouting Dept.

To Be Blamed:

Herm: 20%
Peterson: 40%
Scouting: 40%

All in all, if you add it up, since Carl was the GM and President, he should have overhaul that scouting crew of his after suggestions such as Ryan Sims, Snoop Minnis, Junior Savii, Eddie Freeman, Kris Wilson. And then to let names like Joe Horn, Donnie Edwards and now Jimmy Wilkerson get away in their prime???

To be blame:
Peterson: 100%

Yes, in two years

we will be reaping the benefits of his draft. But if Herm were still coach I don’t think we would ever see the full potential of his drafts. He proved himself to be a pretty decent judge of talent, but horrible at head coaching (clock management in particular in my opinion). I will always give him credit for the picks, but will also give Pioli credit for getting rid of him.

by Fourstrike89 on Jun 24, 2009 6:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

How many

“awesome” pro-bowl players did Herm draft for us? He was an awesome defensive coach for sure, I mean we went from, what, middle of the road to next to last? What a great coach who picked superstars and traded away people that sucked.

I’ve said this numerous times, Herm couldn’t coach a turd out of his ass. He didn’t get the raw end of any deal. He got an unwarranted 2nd attempt to be a head coach from a GM who should have stepped down that was grasping for straws that he would be a puppet. THEN, he jumped the chain of command and I think that’s the reason Pioli fired his ass. There would be zero trust for the coach to not stab you in the back to your boss when there was a disagreement. Finally, he’s still getting paid by the Chiefs for this season, & he’s got another gig already. Sounds pretty damned sweet to me. He got to try his hand at head coaching, found out it wasn’t for him, and wrecked 2 teams in the process.

Yeah, I don’t feel sorry for the guy. Wish him luck in future endeavors and all, hope he gets another HC job elsewhere in the AFC west, lol.

At any rate, to answer the question, HELL NO. Herm wasn’t going to take a team that went 4-12 to 2-14 to the Superbowl with extraordinarily inadequate coaching.

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

I couldn't have said it better

I can’t believe anyone thinks Herm got a bad deal or would do anything else besides bring this team to a 0-16 season. Clark knew he screwed up doing what Herm said that is why he cleaned house!

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Jun 24, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I truly think Clark wanted Herm to stay and Pioli convinced him otherwise in that he needs to have a trust relationship with his coach… Oh, and there’s also the mountains of visual evidence that he couldn’t coach a team to succeed at anything other than being shitty.

Hunt made it clear he wanted Herm to stay and low-and-behold, Pioli was able to show Hunt the light. Before becoming a HC, Herm was a DB coach and assitant HC. He was never a coordinator, and seemingly never had any more duty than to coach than the few DB’s they had in Tampa and swing around on Tony Dungy’s short and curly’s. A team was obviously too much for the guy to handle, and a game plan was apparently something he’d never heard of. “Preparation? You mean the stuff you put on hemorrhoids?”

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

If Herm Would Have Been Here

We’d have been lucky to win four games. That team was going nowhere with him at the helm…his players were out of shape, his game management was crap, and the young players weren’t improving much at all. He didn’t make it to his fourth year because he showed in three that he was taking this team in the complete opposite direction of where it was supposed to go.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.

by UCrawford on Jun 24, 2009 11:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

was losing.

As more time passes.....I'm more convinced that Herm is an ABSOLUTE disaster as a Head coach!

His conditioning program was equal to a Pop Warner bottom of the division bad.

Guys showing up fat and overweight is a fine example of how easy Herm was on the players descipline. No wonder why the players loved him …… they got paid to be an average mediocre.

Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

by aPacificChief on Jun 25, 2009 7:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The real answer

If Herm was still here it most certainly would have been Herm’s year…to be fired.

by Zodeman on Jun 25, 2009 8:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He might've gone 9-7 against a weak schedule.

Basically a 9-7 coach with a good team. But we’d never be done talking about “missing pieces” as long as Herm and Gun were there.
