Kansas City: It has to be Matt Cassel. Yes, we're giving the new quarterback in Kansas City the benefit of the doubt. But he was acquired to be the centerpiece of this team. The Chiefs are young and don't have a lot of stars. It is up to Cassel to be an instant impact player and to be the building block of the team.
Irreplaceable, AFC West style - AFC West - ESPN
Though he hasn't played a game, it's hard to disagree that Cassel is the most irreplaceable player on the Chiefs.

Disagree
As much as I want Matt Cassell to succeed, he hasn’t played a down for the chiefs. Unfortunately with Gonzo gone I don’t have another answer. I want to say Brian Waters, but geese who knows what is going to happen there.

Guards are pretty replaceable
QBs aren’t. That’s what I was thinking. Even if he was average he’d probably be the most irreplaceable player on the roster.

WAIT!!!!!
Cassell has shown a tendancy to hold onto the ball too long and without those gaurds he won’t be making any throws. I know it’s redundant, but we were the best offense in the league due to our O-line not Trent Greene, sry. I don’t disagree with you much Prime, but I am a little nervous about Cassell.

I would probably say Albert.

Agreed
I would go with Cassel if he had completed one pass (let a lone a TD pass) as a Chief. Of the guys who have worn the red and gold in a game, Albert is our most irreplaceable. Who would we plug in without him? Sackintosh? The no-names that haven’t beaten Sack for his job yet? No thanks.

Since Thigpen is very close to equal to Cassel, it’s certainly not Cassel.
I’d have to say LJ, because the dropoff from him to his back up is more massive than any other position on the team.

I don’t want to get into a “my QB is better than your QB” pissing contests, but I have watched quite a few Patriot games from last year ( and I certainly watched all of Thigpens) and Cassel looked really good. Actually made some gutsy, game winning throws against division rivals, etc. I think Cassel is more ready than Thigpen at this point of their careers to be a franchise guy.

Zach Thomas
Because that man looks to have given this defense identity and leadership. Again, another that is a new addition and so its hard to call him irreplaceable. But he is the right man at the right time and comes into a defense starved for some direction and leadership.
But I think the most irreplaceable person in the organization right now is clearly Pioli, the man behind the scenes.
For justice we must go to Don Pioli

Bring back Warpaint
the dog and pony show with “Wolf” has played out too long. F the PC’rs who think we’re bashing on the Indians. I’m part Indian and I aint got a problem with it. Kinda makes me proud to see Bob Johnson on ole Warpaint. Bob and the horse will have to be replaced, but what pride would be unleashed on Arrowhead stadium if the new Warpaint and his rider came roaring down the sideline on that first kickoff for the upcoming season?
Warpaint circled the field at the beginning of each game and after each touchdown. In 1975, the Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders by a score of 42-10, prompting Warpaint to circle the field plenty of times.

Its Albert
The word is irreplaceable. If you pull one of our starters(I know Mr.Haley there are no starters yet) out of the lineup, which position would suffer the greatest? If you pull out Cassell and insert Thigpen the dropoff isnt that great. I’m sure we would be at least a bit less effective but Thigpen has shown that he can step in and be a suitable and pretty productive replacement in this league. If Albert goes down who replaces him? And if you’re unsure about Cassel now, how unsure are you without BA there blocking his backside?

Lets put it this way....
If Albert goes down for god knows why this offseason(knock on wood) how fast do you think we sign Levi Jones or someone else to replace him? Its the only position that we dont have a known viable option should an injury occur.
by GenericBrand on Jun 22, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
+1.
No way it’s Cassel. Thigpen’s nearly his equal, if not better because he managed to put up similar stats without the benefit of playing in New England (ie: Thiggy could’ve won eleven games, too, if he’d been throwing to Moss, Welker, etc.)
LJ? Nope. He hasn’t done anything a rookie couldn’t do since he went down with that foot injury two years ago.
Our only truly irreplacable player was sent to Atlanta.
That leaves us looking at the guys who we don’t have back-ups for and, unfortunately, that’s Albert. I don’t think we have anyone on the squad who can step up and fill his shoes if he goes down.

I never realized
The man crushes on thigpen were so hard around here.
I was all about keeping thigpen as the starter….until I got my nfl rewind account. Seriously guys, best 20 bucks I’ve spent this off season. Go watch some New England games and actually SEE Cassel play. Stats can be deceiving, ie Big Ben.

Seriously. Anyone who disagrees and thinks thigpen is even close to the QB Cassel is, thats fine. Have your opinions. But please, please, please watch all of the new england games and rewatch thiggys games.

Mancrush? I think somebody jux may be projecting a little
Why is it a mancrush when somebody favors a player that you don’t but not a mancrush when you replay each and every pro game in which your player ever competed?
I looked all around and I couldn’t find any New England games that Cassel played in that didn’t have Moss, Welker, an offensive line and a defense. Thigpen did what he did with none of that.
Yeah, stats can be deceiving alright.
by LennytheCool on Jun 22, 2009 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
I didn’t watch because I loved Cassel dude. I clearly stated above that I watched because I originally thought Thigpen was better but wanted to give Cassel a fair shot. I hadn’t watched any of Cassels games this year except the Steelers one and that was horrible.
I was hoping he was better than I gave him credit for and I got to see it in the games.
If you agree that stats are deceiving, how about you remove YOUR bias and watch the games of both players. I’m not trying to change your mind, I’m just asking you to look at the evidence from both sides.
"...Said he couldn't go on the American way"
by Jux on Jun 23, 2009 1:38 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Neither you or I have any evidence of which QB will be better
and watching the entire 2008-09 season of the New England Patriots won’t provide either of us with any. Neither Cassel or Thigpen will be playing for the Patriots. They will be Chiefs and how effective either will be is going to be a function of how effective the rest of the team is and how well either will be at adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the 2009 Chiefs.
I didn’t watch 50+ hours of Patriot football but I did watch this: http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/2/28/775637/video-matt-cassel-2008-hig. I see a QB who can run and pass. I also see a guy who hangs on to the ball a long, long time waiting for his receivers. He won’t have that luxury here.
I don’t really have a bias as to which of the two guys will be better. I watched Thigpen get better as last season went on and I would have been comfortable with him as the Chiefs #1 QB this season. The team traded for Cassel and his big contract, so its obvious that barring a complete meltdown on his part, Cassel will be the starter. At the time of the trade I felt the team should have addressed other positions rather than QB, but it is done and I’ve come to accept that having two competent quarterbacks is marginally better than having one.
I don’t know which QB is going to be better. We will have to wait until the season begins to know that answer. But one thing I do believe is that unless the offensive line is truly improved over the unit that took the field at the beginning of last season and the team remembers how to run the ball, its really likely that both QBs will end up getting a lot of playing time.
by LennytheCool on Jun 23, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats stupid
Of course we have evidence to judge which QB would be better. Thats exactly what stats, film, and OTAs are all about. Of course I can never KNOW what is going to happen…it would be pretty ridiculous to say that you could.
And I’m also not saying you have to watch all of the Patriot games to make an informed decision. I just said that it changed MY mind. I can have an opinion right?
What I’ve seen from watching the entire games that you haven’t just watching highlights is that Moss and Welker did not carry Cassel through the season. It also gave a better look at the intangibles that big play highlights and stats can’t show.
Whatever anyway. There are plenty of places you can go debate this, just look for 1 of the 40 thipgen v cassel fanposts. My point is that watching the games and how cassel played when the game was on the line changed my mind about him.

Good arguments for others too. The “Patriot way” is to make everyone replaceable. Hopefully that’s where we will be in a year.
by JComp11 on Jun 22, 2009 4:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely Cassel
IMO, he stretches our passing game from 5 to 15 yard throws to 15 to 30 yard throws instead. More wide-outs rather than dump-offs helping to take defenses from “8 in the box” to more conventional sets. That in turn, will help our O-line & the running game which in turn helps the Defense. Its all going to start with him. He will see the streaking Bradley & Devard rather than missing them with the short routes (of Herm’s philosophy)!

Blown away LJ's name wasn't mentioned more
Still one of the top running backs in the league.. The guy commands more respect from opposing defenses than anyone else on our entire offense..

He was doing that more toward the end of last season.
Pass-blocking, that is. Time will tell if he’s become a worker & team player, or reverts to being a prima donna. If he’s smart, he’s been working on his hands in the off-season.
Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.
Next on the need list: linebacker, and both lines

Especially this year.
I don’t think LJ gives 2 shits about the team or the city, but with the new front office and his money on the line he is playing for LJ again. He has the talent and if he is playing for his own well being he might stay out of trouble and makes some plays.

Its funny how
the comments on that blog said “It has to be Phillip Rivers because hes the best player in the division”…My ASS! And if TG were here he would be the best in the division…hes had that crown for a very long time. And whats up with the “honorable nod” to Shawn Merriman? He shows he cant succeed without his sterioids, and look at him now when hes off of them…HE GETS HURT!

It's funny how few times I've heard that
I haven’t heard a lot of people talking about how Merriman’s game dropped off after he was caught using roids, or how he got hurt after getting off them.
