Around SBN: My First Fight: Diego Sanchez

But the way Haley sees it, getting in shape was priority No. 1. To that end, he instituted mandatory weigh-ins at the beginning and end of each week, making players who were too heavy on Fridays do extra running. He sat in the weight room every day and watched the workouts, and had his coaches monitor things when he couldn't. (It will be interesting to see how players ultimately react to that, seeing as they often judge coaches by whether they "treat us like men.")

Regardless, Haley identified the problem and set out to fix it. In the process, he shed some serious pounds himself, going from 217 to 192.

In press conference Haley said he would fight like hell to get Boldin if he was more available.

I saw this somewhere also

But that’s about as useful as I get. Can’t provide a link.

I could get more sacks with my sack

Here is Haley's take on Boldin
I love Anquan. We had two great years together. He was very productive. The emotion of the game got blown out of proportion in our sideline dispute. Anquan is a heck of a player. Probably the toughest player I’ve ever been around. You can’t match his toughness. I’d be fighting for him if he was more available.

this came from the post where he was interviewed by the clowns from Pittsburg

"more available"

that’s the key… if he were a FA, or the Cards would take a 2nd rd pick for him, he’d probably be a chief

Califan: Haley was saying that was no big deal.

Something to the effect of “That kind of intensity got us to the superbowl and all of a sudden it’s a distraction?” That was the thrust of his remark. I can’t recall anything from Boldin about his relationship with Haley, but Haley has lots of respect for him, and that kind of intensity we saw in the NFCC is apparently not all that unusual for THEM, even if it looked off-the-charts to US. And it looked off the charts to ME when I watched it. I’ve gone so far as to point that incident out as a negative for a young HC.

It’s a rare thing to be with a group of people you can let it all out with, like that. A HC is in a unique position to transmit that kind of brutal honesty and single-minded purpose to 53 players plus coaches, if he can pull it off. And he can if he’s fuckin’ right most of the time and not obstinate about it when he ain’t. I think that this relates to treating players like men and expectin’ ’em to act like men.

This seems to run counter to the way he monitors the weight room. But I know from my experience as a math teacher that if you don’t insist on a certain amount of work and let them know you’re watching (grading daily work), you’re going to lose a certain percentage of the class, because they won’t do the work if you don’t insist, they’ll fall behind, and have their asses handed to ‘em on the test (which you don’t want). A lot of people have a Herm Edwards mgmt style. “They’re all adults. They know what’s expected of ’em.” The trick is to treat ’em like adults and yet stay after ’em every day.

And who amongst all learners seem to benefit the most from close monitoring and structure? The young men. A woman or an older guy who’s seen some lean times and is back in school for a better life will work all day and night if they have to, in order to meet your expectations, and they end up expecting more from themselves than you every expected. A young guy thinks he’s smart/talented/gifted and figures he’ll be able to get by on the test if he crams the night before. And there are a million other things he’d rather do than apply himself to your shit every day,and he’ll take off as many days as you let him get away with.

+100,000,000

As a cocky know-it-all youngster I quit college when my parents were paying for everything so I could go run a fast food restaurant. All I was doing in school was majoring in smoking dope and drinking beer, getting a combination of B’s and F’s in school. I have learned well over the years the folly of my actions. Finally made it back to school and just graduated in May and this time around made A in all but one class! The difference in work ethic with having some motivation is amazing.

Ditto...

Congrats from me as well. I know what you mean. First time I attended college, Central Missouri State, all I did was get blotto and chase ass. I am now a parent of two and am back in college myself. It’s hard, but this time around there is meaning and drive. I’ve been back for 2 years and have yet to score lower than an A-. I want to be able to look my kids in the face and tell them if Daddy went to college, then so can you…

Plus

These are all young guys complaining about this with the exception of Waters. Young guys coming off six wins in two years aren’t in a position to demand respect just because they’re being told to do better conditioning. If Haley’s cursing them out in hallways, that’s one thing…if he’s doing stuff like this that directly affects performance and they’re unhappy, they’re the problem, not Haley.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.

toss the fat

In cooking fat = flavor, What Haley is saying in the NFL fat = losing, and I tend to believe him. We had a bunch of over weight unmotivated players last year and only got 2 wins out of them. But now Haley is making them work, and that line about offending players who want to be “treated like a man” seems to be completely wrong. All but 2 players have been at the voluntary workouts and seem committed to improving and winning.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

by KC Fanatic on Jun 21, 2009 9:00 AM CDT reply actions

I Agree With Haley's Approach Here

I thought one of the biggest problems with the Chiefs last year was an obvious lack of strength and conditioning. Usually when a team collapses in the second half of a game the way the Chiefs constantly did you can look at two things right off the bat:

1) Failure of the coaching staff to make adjustments to the game plan.
2) Players being out of shape.

We all heard about Herm’s Club Med approach to training last year, which would have made sense with a team of older vets who’d been through the season several times before but was a ridiculous approach with a team as young as the Chiefs had last year. All that encouraged the young players to do was put in a half-assed effort to game prep.

There are several concerns I’ve got with Haley this year…his offseason conditioning program is not one of them.

Haley lost weight himself

so he is right there doing the workouts too. That says something about h im.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

If he doesn't win, UCrawford, he'll just be a bitchy HC.

Right now they’re just trying to keep their jobs under a hardass HC’s gentle ministrations. it’s different when you’re all on the same side tryin’ ta beat the guys on the other side. I’m not one to chew people out, myself. It’s easy enough to devastate someone just by being frank about their performance, without going to those lengths. Nevertheless, I get the sense that Haley knows what he’s about, and is miles ahead of Mills when it comes to ramroddin’ a 53-man outfit.

by hmills110 on Jun 21, 2009 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Ultimately It's All About The Wins

I’ve got serious concerns about Haley’s choice of assistant coaches (I didn’t like the Pendergast and Gibbs hires and absolutely despised the Carthon hire) and I’m not entirely sure that Haley is ready to be a head coach. But if he wins with this team, I’ll admit that my concerns were misplaced. After all, it’s not like he’s likely to be a worse tactician than Herm (who would have been the most incompetent head coach in the NFL last year if not for Tom Cable).

Predictions for 2009

Pendergast was a 2nd choice IMO

We are all a 1st timer at something once. And will learn. Hopefully Haley will have Pioli and Parcells to keep the Rudder straight outside of the public view. You don’t like Cable and McDaniels has blown so far, and Norv is Norv. Why do you think that Haley cannot succeed at least in the AFC West?

I Think He'll Pull 2nd In The AFC West

My concern is more how he’ll do against the rest of the NFL with the talent on-hand. Doing well in the AFC West isn’t a particularly impressive feat these days.

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.

Agreed

But we finished last in 2008. I don’t feel that 2nd in 2009 would make you happy.
We should at least match the rest of the West against Non AFC West Opponents.

2nd In The AFC West Would Be Okay

If we finish with a 9-7 record, I’ll be happy with Haley’s performance. If we finish 7-9 I’ll be okay with it. If we finish lower than 7-9 I’ll think Haley and Pioli did a terrible job this year.

I honestly believe that this team was not talentless last year, just extremely poorly coached. So if the Chiefs can’t eke out 7 wins with this roster, I think you can start pointing fingers at Pioli and Haley.

I Think San Diego Wins It By Default

They get Merriman back and they had a decent draft so I think they win on talent even with Norv coaching. That’s how pathetic the AFC West is this year. I think Denver and Oakland have dug their own graves this offseason.

Thanks

There’s no excuse for what he did, but I also realize that it is something that could happen to any one of us if we display a lapse in judgment, and I think Stallworth did everything he could have done since then to make amends short of throwing his life away. Tough but fair works, if it gets results.

Just tough gives you Tom Coughlin, who DOES lose players. They went all the way when he got human. Haley’s bowling tourney and early release say he’s leavening the hard line with rewards and even some fun.

And I’ll dip into the teacher well one more time with the “foot on the neck” principle. You can ALWAYS take your foot OFF their necks down the stretch, as long as you put ‘em under your heel on Day 1 and keep it there. It’s always better to be the teacher that kicks their asses and then gives the class some free time at the end, than to be the softie who has to cover 10 chapters in 2 weeks right before Finals, or throws 3 essays at you in the last week.

by hmills110 on Jun 21, 2009 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

I Think That's Right

A good counterpoint would be Wade Phillips in Dallas. He’s coming into the upcoming season saying he’s going to crack the whip more, but frankly I suspect that either he won’t run things any differently or if he does he’ll get laughed at by his players. You can come in as a hardass then lighten up, it doesn’t really work the other way.
