Whether it was at tight end, wide receiver, or in the backfield, the Chiefs needed to add another weapon for Cassel to work with. It didn’t happen and that could have season-long consequences.

Got To Say

Gretz is right about Waters. I’m sympathetic to him if the confrontation with Haley went down the way we heard it did, but half-assing your job is rarely a good approach to dealing with it. It makes Waters look like the problem. And if he really wants to get traded, the market for aging out-of-shape guards really isn’t that good so he’s stuck here unless he can play his way out of here.

And Gretz is also right that if Waters is the leader he seems to think he is, he needs to get past his problems with Haley and actually show that he can push others to get results. If a leader doesn’t have anyone following him and isn’t getting results, he’s not really a leader.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.

Waters is a player rep

He had a larger role in the CBA than most so I’m not that surprised he’s exercising his rights to skip voluntary practice.

That said, I think we all know the reason he was gone. He says he’s never there but the facts don’t agree with that….he was at the offseason program last year.

The same thing can be said about Mike Vrable...

and look at the 2 that weren’t at the voluntary practices. Everyone else showed up to voluntary practices at one time

On Vrabel

I’m extremely unimpressed with him so far. Sure, getting traded sucks if you liked where you were at, but it’s part of the NFL, he’s on a team that needs him to step up with a fan base that is supportive of their players, he’s coming off a down year and he’s a no-show at OTAs. For a supposed “leader” I expect a little more…he’s getting paid a pretty generous salary after all and the Patriots could have just dumped him so he gets nothing (Cassel would have been worth the 2nd rounder without Vrabel as a throw-in).

The odd thing about this

Is in interviews after that Mini-Camp, despite him missing everything else, Vrabel along with Thomas were indentified as the strong leaders by the younger players.

by GenericBrand on Jun 19, 2009 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Waters came to voluntaries in '08, reportedly to help Branden Albert.

But that was the exception, rather than the rule. And it’s not as if the extra work paid off, with the Chiefs going 2-14. So I don’t have a whole lot to be critical of. But yeah, we’d all feel better if everybody showed up to OTAs. The turnout they DID get, though, is encouraging, and the guys who missed are unlikely to be a problem for the team.

The Twitter deal

from the writer at the LA Times that did the interview of Haley seemed to be pretty promising to me. The best quote from the post:

On Brian Waters: “It’s getting closer.. We had a good conversation the day he left. The guy can play. He’s going to look at it with an open mind.”

by JComp11 on Jun 19, 2009 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haley called it a "good conversation"

Waters called it nothing but “hello, hi”

by Joel Thorman on Jun 19, 2009 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd have to go back and check...

But I think the conversation Waters referred to as nothing but “Hi” was in reply to what Haley claimed to be a discussion the first day of minicamp and here Haley is referring to one the last day?

by GenericBrand on Jun 19, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

6/5 Haley made the comment about a good conversation
6/6 Waters said that conversation was merely “Hello, Hi”

The day he left would’ve been 6/7 so maybe there was another conversation? Hopefully there was and hopefully he complimented Waters play in that conversation like he did in this quote because based on Gretz’s report he was turning Dlineman into pylons all weekend even though he isnt in the best of shape yet.

by GenericBrand on Jun 19, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you're right

But Haley called it a good conversation both times….so who knows, at this point.

by Joel Thorman on Jun 19, 2009 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe any conversation that doesn’t end with Waters saying “Trade Me!” is a good conversation.

UC, where ya been?

This Waters thing is starting to get on my nerves. Sure maybe he had a spat with the new staff but the guy is a 33 yr old 300 pound LG. If I was him i wouldn’t show up for volantary workouts either. The wear and tear on the joints of a man his size and age has to be tough. We need him this season and we need him healthy. As long as he shows up to camp in shape Im 100 percent ok with him not being here now. Let him rest the big ole body of his as long as possible because Cassel and crew will need him come September.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

speculation

I’m pretty tired of listening to speculation about Waters and Vrabel.

Yes, Waters had one reported “incident”… But, he’s been here for the mandatory camp, he didn’t speak out or act out, and he’s under contract. In my opinion, it’s a non issue. The media is desperate for a story, so they are creating one.

Exact same with Vrabel, only it’s more BS. Vrabel has never said anything about being unhappy, and according to the coaches has been keeping in touch and learning the defense, even when he’s not there. Again, he’s been here for the mandatory camp, he didn’t speak out or act out, and he’s under contract.

YES, it’d be nice to have their “leadership” for the OTAs… but they will both be there for training camp and the season, and have plenty of time to assert themselves as leaders on and off the field.

I'm beginning to think

Pioli has enough an ego and belief in his ability that he and Haley are almost purposely not bringing in household names because this 1st year on their own they’re looking to prove they can win and win with nobody’s. When I saw the Broncos signed Brandon Lloyd it still shows talent is out there, it just may not be Pioli’s type of talent. I just don’t see how possibly we can go into the season though with receivers we do now. I remember us all thinking about how weak our QB depth was last season and we all saw that one blow up in front of our face. Hopefully this won’t be the case for us this season with the receivers. If they bring someone in I wish they would just do it now so they can go thru training camp, learn the playbook, and buy into the program. Mark Bradley made a hell of a splash last year though and that was midway through so, hey, what do I know? All I know is names like Keary Colbert that were undesirable at the beginning of the off-season are starting to sound a whole lot better than Jeff Webb & Rodney Wright

by KansasCityShuffle on Jun 19, 2009 9:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree about the ego

It really seems like the new regime has something to prove, and insist on doing it their way.
Maybe they think that bringing in big name free agents is like “selling out” ?

They want to build for the long term, by drafting and develping their own players.
I hope they can do it!

As for a WR… I’d take Toomer or maybe Booker… but it’d be real nice if Bradley/Darling/Johnson/Lawerence step up and assert themselves in training camp.

by stagdsp on Jun 19, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I used to think the Chiefs have to bring in another WR

But then I read an article about the WR’s Trent Green had when we had the top offense of the NFL. Besides Tony the others were just regular receivers, so it made me think we might be OK. I still wish we would bring in someone else but it did make me feel better. I can’t find the article so if someone else remembers I could use the help.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

ZT will be a bigger leader on this Defense than Vrabel IMO.

In his career, Zach Thomas has always been known to be a vocal leader in the locker room.
As far as Waters goes, I am disappointed in the way he has acted. He is an employee and if the boss doesn’t have time time to talk because he’s in the middle of working on a MONUMENTAL QB acquisition then, Waters needs to respect that. Yes, he has always been a leader type but, if he can’t get to camp in shape and he wants to go somewhere else, fuck him. We can put in Herb Taylor who, may not be BW but, he is still a damn good O-Lineman.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jun 19, 2009 9:31 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Waters is an employee

Yes it would have been nice to see him here. But let me ask this question….Would YOU, as an employee devote several hours a day over several months time to your employer for no extra pay?

Personally I have done that a LOT over my working years, which has resulted in me leaving several jobs because it was out of control. However, I can hardly fault someone for working within the rules of their agreement. We’ll see how he does when he shows up to camp, and what condition he’s in.

by Zodeman on Jun 19, 2009 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't make MILLIONS of dollars for my job either.

I understand what you are saying but, if he were buying into a “team first philosophy” he would be here. He has always been there in the past.
When a team is in the position the Chiefs are in right now, (new look, new coaching, QB Etc.) It is very important that anyone who can possibly be there show up. (especially if he considers himself a leader) If he wants to be the man and help the team he needs to step up and swallow his pride. And seriously, if he wants to go play for another team, they should just trade him and see if we can get a good skill position player in trade. Would he be missed? Definitely but, he is a GUARD! I am not saying that it is not an important position but, we have big men on the team who could do the job if he is going to be a prick about this.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jun 19, 2009 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're hired to do everything you can possibly do to win games

He’s not doing everything he could possibly do to win games for this team. He’s not even showing that he wants to be a part of this team. He’s had a Teacher’s summer vacation x2 from January through June in the offseason, and he’s still excercising rights not to come to work?

IF

If waters comes out and plays at a Pro Bowl level, attends all mandatory meetings and practices, and continues to clean on an off the field…

he’s done his job, and helped the team… in my humble opinion.

Would you disagree?

by stagdsp on Jun 19, 2009 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, if he does all that, then he's helped the team

But as it stands now—this season— he hasn’t done his job, unless his job is to show up out of shape for mandatory mini-camp. Had he been at the voluntary OTAs, which I think should be mandatory anyway, he would have been in better shape and gotten more reps with the 1st team offense. But instead, he practiced with the 2nd team because he was out of shape. That’s unprofessional, imo. Especially for a pro bowler.

by ArrowSpread on Jun 19, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally see your point, Zodeman.

If he shows up unprepared and out of shape for camp, that’ll be a problem. One thing about this life that’s hard for a lot of us Americans to understand is that the idea is to work to live, rather than live to work. The NFLPA fought for actual time off for their players and they WON. Sometimes the best thing you can do to be your best at work is get AWAY from work, and quite trying to be a superhero AT work.

My sense of where Haley-Waters is sitting right now is that Haley’s got no problem with the guy, and has probably told him that all he needs to do is show up in shape. His last comment, quoted elsewhere, shows Waters plenty of respect for his skills. Attending minicamp gave Waters an idea of how things are going to run “on the hop,” and he knows what the conditioning test will entail.

while I'm at it...

the lack of new pass-rushers argument is getting old too.

OBVIOUSLY, Pioli and Haley DO believe they have the talent on this team to create pressure on the QB, given some coaching and a new scheme.

See the fanshot about Robertson and Studebaker… maybe there are some guys already on the roster that have tremendous ability, and just need the opportunity.

Would it be nice to have Peppers and Taylor lined up on the outside, with Hanesworth in the middle? Sure.

Is it entirely possible to have a good defense that pressures the quarterback without bringing in higher priced, big name free agents? ABSOLUTELY

by stagdsp on Jun 19, 2009 10:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I disagree with most of this analysis.

#1. Our offense was ok last year, with sparks of brilliance. We lost a big weapon when #88 went to the falcons, but Herm’s mandate to put the ball into Tony’s hands even when he was double and triple covered DID NOT help us. Look for a more balanced passing attack, which will improve the running game, which will help the passing attack. I love Tony G, but our offensive numbers won’t suffer with him gone.

#2. Our pass rush suffered largely due to inept coaching. It’s time to stop crying about the loss of Jared Allen and work with what we have. Last season, no one on D was playing to his full ability—many were taking plays off, some of them entire quarters. When our D decided to make an effort, they were confused and prone to over-pursuing. So they key isn’t acquiring new pass rushers, but rather coaching the ones we have to achieve their potential. Better coaching is the key here, and it’s being addressed.

#3. A better defense gives your offense more opportunities. This can’t be stressed often enough. When you stop the other team, you increase your number of scoring opportunities. Improving the D is the same thing as adding firepower to your offense… it’s the same thing!

As for Waters or Vrabel, I’m not concerned. They are professionals, on and off the field, and I expect both of them to contribute.

I agree with a lot of what you have said

except for number 1. Im not so sure it was Herms mandate for Thiggy to throw up prayers to TG all the time. I think Thigpen was locked onto Tony because he wasn’t very good at making his reads and he trusted that if he could get the ball near Tony he would catch it. Im sure Herm wanted Tony to be a big part of the O but i think Thigpen forced the ball to Tony more than he should have.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

+1

Tony G was Thiggy’s mancrush and security blanket.

Cassel should make better decisions and spread it around more. The offense should be less predictable this year…

Less predictable= frustrating for fans in the offseason, frustrating for defenses in the regular season

Quite possible.

Hard to say whether it was Herm or Thig… I really like Thigpen, and maybe I’m unjustly blaming Herm because of that. That said, I’ve very excited about Cassel, and I hope we’ve found the franchise QB we’ve been missing for so long.

by Pilcrow on Jun 19, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had a man crush on Thig last year

He made our team watchable at the very least. I hated Herm as much as the next guy and Thigpen is the only reason i could stomach most of the games last year. With that being said, Thigpen was far from perfect but at the very least he showed that he has some potential in this league.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

by paratrooper on Jun 19, 2009 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely... the kid has heart.

And he was amazingly mobile… but a lot of that was due the screen door of McIntosh forcing him to run for his life.

Thig has a future in this league, and spending a season or two behind Cassel will only help him.

Articles like this are getting annoying,

It seems like two to three times a week we have to endure what Pioli and Haley havent done and how we have all these holes and how the team hasnt improved and it’s kind of getting annoying to read over and over. Yes, I know its June and we’ve now hit the most boring part of the offseason but get some new material or try something new already.

No one wants to hear about Waters or Vrabel anymore because there hasnt been and won’t be any new information. Anything written about them is 90% speculation analyzning their supposed “behaviors” really thats far from being a “reporter”. Waters was pissed, he showed up in camp(I highly doubt it was over $8000 for a guy who makes millons), him and Haley had a decent chat on the last day of Mini-camp and we’ll see you at Training camp. Vrabel is away exercising his rights under the CBA and maybe because he’s a rep he’s been pressure to do so especially with CBA negotiations heating up over the next year or two. Other then that we have to take what he says at face value.

As far as “what didn’t get done”, who’s to say it didnt get done? Who’s to say that the players to fill all the roles weren’t already on the team and they just needed to be used correctly or have the right balance of veterans to bring out the best in their play? Pioli is a good GM, one of the best, and he had nearly 40 million dollars and couldve had virtually any player he wanted this offseason. Do you really think that a guy isn’t going to improve his team over ego? Trying to prove that he can do better with the same group of hacks that lost 14 games last year? Call me crazy but I’m going to go with Pioli maybe knowing a bit better what needed to be done this offseason then Gretz and all the other
“reporters” reaching for a story.

I’ve said it a hundred times, management and the coaching staff know something that we dont and that’s why theres been no movement. The guys to fill the holes may already be on this team already. Its possible that they still need to develop and that the team may be a season and a few players away but I say lets wait until they play a game before we start commenting on what they didn’t do this offseason.

am tired of pessimistic articles about the chiefs, however this one had some substance to it and it was the opposite side of the coin from yesterday’s story “what the chiefs did get done”. I agree

I think that Gretz was trying to do 2 things here:

1. Keep his reporting balanced so he doesn’t sound like a homer with just positive things to say. He needed to come up with some negatives and this is all he could find.

2. Soften the blow for us. Gretz does a great job of trying not to let us all wear red colored glasses. He knows how bad it hurts when the letdown comes, so it’s best not to have ridiculous expectations for the team.

I like Gretz…seems to be a pretty straight shooter.

Not sure if anyone remembers

One of Pioli’s first interviews he was asked something about what he thought about the Chiefs he said he knew there are a lot of young talented players on the team. That makes me think he knew we had talent just needed good coaching and some vets in the right places.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

The receivers are woefully thin

Bowe will get more attention, Bradley is fragile as glass and Engram old as dirt

Haley still doesn't know what he even HAS.

There’s much that will not be revealed until they put on the pads and run full-contract drills. You Tsun Tzu fans know how dumb it is to commit to action without full knowledge of the facts. And we can say all we want about seeing holes here or there, but if the Chiefs themselves are waiting for more information, I think we prob’ly should, too.

Make no mistake. There will be some short strokes coming. The 85 (83?) guys they’ve had in all the OTAs have built a real sense of team and loyalty to one another. How Haley handles the axe and whom they bring in during training camp is going to be a test of the team psychology. How will they respond to the axe falling on their buddies?

You can almost BET that KC is far from putting the finishing touches on this ‘09 squad. They’ve done their best, imo, to get the most from the guys in OTAs, and certainly hope the final 53 are already in-house, but neither they nor we should expect that to be the case.

The one tired saw I’m sick of hearing is “They didn’t bring in a pass-rusher.” Soren Petro had some choice remarks about that. Sack totals are misleading. The biggest sack total for a SB winner came from the St. Louis Rams, whose defense enjoyed double-digit leads as often as not, and spent 2 or 3 quarters just blitzing the passer. Played run defense to start games, because everybody wanted to control the clock, and everybody feared getting into a high-scoring circus with the Lambs.

Anyway, the pass-rusher rant is very superficial. And Gretz needs to address that widely-held concern, on general principles. I think he also brought up the fact that NE won a SB without ANYone having double digit sack total. I think Vrabel was #1 that particular season, with 9-and-a-half. And a lot of great defenses don’t post top-notch sack totals as a team.

Chiefs WILL get pressure with the blitz. I don’t believe the “live by the blitz, die by the blitz” rant. I’m a “live by the blitz, win with the blitz” guy. My biggest concern for this D is whether the safety can control himself on the blitz and control his level of violence. Don’t want roughing the passer calls to negate their efforts!

Blurring who said what.

Petro made the “sack totals are misleading” argument. Gretz just pointed at the lack of an obvious big move for a pure pass rusher.

Gretz

Hello all. This is my first post here, but I have been reading them long enough that I almost feel I know some of you (but not 65tosspowertrap…..what’s up with that dillhole?).

Anyway, I just thought I would throw in my 1.5 cents on Bob Gretz, as I see support for him here. I used to really enjoy reading his articles. That is until he started backing all things Herm Edwards. When the team is halfway decent, Gretz’s articles are informative and well written. But when the team sucks, it quickly becomes apparent who signs his paycheck (at least when he is writing for www.kcchiefs.com).

It would have been nice if he had written an article stating that he was incorrect about Herm, where so many fans were correct. Especially considering that he argued with fans (in “from the mailbag” stuff) in defense of Herm’s brilliant plan. If this article does, in fact exist, please point me to it. (As you may have guessed, I was one of those who argued with him.)

(That’s me squealing like a little girl.)

OK, sorry about that. In future postings I will attempt to keep my starstruck awe to a minimum.

Seriously though, thanks for the welcome.
