Recon on AFC West Management, Part One
Want to play a Game? Let's play some 3-card Stud.
We shall examine each teams top Decision makers.
The San Diego Chargers:
Alex Spanos is the Owner of the Chargers but Dean Spanos has run team since 1994.
Apparently, Dean chooses wisely to pick a good GM and stand back. Let's use Dean as Chargers 1st card.
Dean hired someone well known here in KC Marty Schottenheimer in 2002.
Then brought in current GM AJ Smith prior to 2004 season. The Chargers finished the 2004-2006 3 year period
with a regular season record of 35-13 but with 2-1st round Playoff losses.
It would seem to be a Chicken/Egg thing as whether Smith or Marty was more responsible for that record.
AJ Smith was the GM and chose to replace Marty after a 14-2 season. Let's use AJ as Chargers 2nd card.
Enter Norv Turner Head Coach from 2007 to present. He has posted a record of 19-13 and 3-2 in playoffs.
Norv was handed a Ferrari in 2007 and started 5-5 only to Gas it to finish in AFC Championship game.
In 2008 Norv got off to an even worst start at 4-8 only to edge out a sputtering Broncos at the line.
In 2009 another sputtering start should doom the Chargers. Let's use Norv as Chargers 3rd and final card.

After the Jump some more info and an analysis and What another damn Poll!
Dean would seem have to have a handfull of issue unrelated to the Field. He has been attempting to get an updated stadium in San Diego but has been met with resistance by the city and a laid-back SoCal fan base. Hence a flirtation with LA that might end up moving the team North. Might we have a California Chargers team in future?
AJ Smith has worked the Draft for good/bad like we thought Pioli would in 2009. He pulled of the Ely/Rivers mess and probably would have been fine either way. He has been very active in draft.
2007
2008
"Having dispatched the club's #2, #3 and #4 picks in earlier deals to acquire Chris Chambers,
Eric Weddle and Paul Oliver, respectively, the Chargers were not scheduled to pick again until
the 5th Round. A.J. Smith, however, had targeted a particular player to replace the departed Michael Turner,
and so made a trade to acquire a 3rd Round pick with which to get him: LSU's Jacob Hester."
from signonsandiego.com
Hester cost the Chargers their 2008 5th and their 2009 #2 pick.
Norv Turner has to have the pressure on in 2009 as San Diego would be assumed to be the "Cream of the West" Another so-so start would have AJ Smith looking at a crop of HC candidates in 2010 to choose from. Probably not the best outcome for the Chiefs to have Shanahan, Crennel, Marty Again, Billick, Cowher, or Gruden staring back at us from the SD sideline. But would be the probability with the Chiefs winning the 2009 West Championship.
Now onto the Poll.

Am having some problems on site today with posts. Server Issues?
or just me? I was getting ready to Kick start this thing. Thanks for voting and Wrecks.
Just looking at the schedule do you think that Norv will have another slow start?
Merriman injury slowed em up last year and they got English to Pass rush?
Also Vincent Jackson has some issues as #1 WR.

I have had some problems with the site recently, but not today?
Looking at the schedule, I think that if they can get off to a strong start, which hasn’t been there strong suit, they will be one of the best teams in the AFC. The have a good QB, running game, and defense. The key for them will be staying healthy. Getting Merriman back is a huge plus. But, I think we have the best chance of contending with them in the conference. Although, our defensive transition may hurt us against a more veteran team like the Chargers.
Rivers is proven, the O-Line is in some transition at RG
LT McNeill, LG Dielmann, C Hardwick, RG Forney, RT Clary.
I look at this team and wonder how they pulled a 8-8 last year?
As Western Division Champs they draw a Miami and Tennessee that we don’t.
Slight edge to us:)

They did draft their RGOTF in Louis Vasquez
and Miami “might” be a little flash in the pan. I look for them to come back down to earth and be more like 8-8. Plus, the Titans without Haynesworth should be a much easier draw. They are still a quality team, but they should be easier to run on.
Vasquez will have some growing pains
As spread player in NFL same as our drafted RT.
Forney will probably start season he was backup to Goff right?
Vasquez probably in 2nd game.
AJ Smith seems like he is on the ball, Not quite sure why he didn’t look to replace Turner this off-season, probably looking to 2010 all along.

How......
Did they pull 8-8 last yr? I’ll tell ya it was three things 1- P.Rivers carried the team on his back most of the season. 2- Bowe dropping the onside kick! 3- the collapse of the Bronco’s!
Nice
And I still got your back:)

The only coach that would scare me
would be Marty, but it would be a major concession by Smith to hire him again.
Shanahan and Cowher would want to much power and the past tiff with Marty proves Smtih won’t share power.
I still think Crennel will have some role here in KC, but we shall see.
Gruden and Billick? While both have a SB, they’re very, VERY, mundane.
This was a great post and can’t wait to the Broncos or Raiders!

Thanks
I imagine that AJ Smith will want a coach to compete with Pioli/Haley and Davis/Cable.
I saw that AJ is concerned with a Patriot way in AFC West, He should be and will try to rectify that.

Parting ways with Marty once your team is pretty much built
is not an indictment of Smith. Marty was great at building a competitive team, but typically misunderstood the underlying reasons for his success, and then started flailing around in FA and the draft, looking for the missing piece in all the wrong places.
Having said THAT, I THINK there are issues on the d-front that are underreported. Made a splash with English and the return of Merriman, but I don’t think they addressed the underlying disintegration. I’ll double-check sources on this claim. For some reason, Igor Olshansky is coming to mind, here.
Obviously the O isn't the problem
Have not scouted the D to see the real issue :(
I assumed that Norv under-performed again.

If the Chargers lose at Oakland, split the next two and Get their Ass handed to them @Pittsburgh do the change HC at Bye?

That would tie Smith’s hands at end of season to promote from within IMO.

His named
was being floated as a HC after the Bear’s 2006 run. Nothing suited his fancy, the Bears got mad, let him go, so he signed on as a LB coach with the Bolts, then year later became their DC. When Norv is done, he’ll be the new HC and Smith will still have his power.

Does that seem the direction AJ Smith would go?
He seems to be about a proven HC, Just maybe not the premier type?

Just a little sad that 3 people think what the Chiefs face is unimportant.
