The Other TG: Trent Green
Well its official now: Trent Green has called it quits.
We're all glad that Trent decided to retire. I know I am. He was one of the classiest guys around. When you look up the word leader in the dictionary, there is a picture of Trent right next to it. We all loved this guy. Here is why I was fond of him:
*Despite his extremely rocky first season, he had that offense down pat. Someone made a point that all he did was throw 5 yard passes here and there. I don't believe that's true. He knew how to run Al Saunders' playbook (which was supposedly the size of a phonebook). And all he did was throw for over 20,000 yards during his time here. He went to 2 Pro Bowls because of his play.
*Trent was brilliant. I'd rank him up there with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in terms of football IQ. He didn't have a great arm but he was accurate as hell and he was sharp (reminds me of Chad Pennington).
*He wasn't a crybaby. When the trade talks with Miami were breaking down, he didn't throw a hissy fit. He jsut went about his business. If you don't believe me, look at the facts: he still kept coming to Chiefs practices even when he didn't want to be there. He still showed up like a champion. Peterson took his sweet ass time trying to deal Trent, but TG kept quiet and went about his work.
*I remember in 2005 hearing about Trent's dad passing away. It was during the middle of season and the reporter on CBS mentioned that tidbit. Supposedly she asked Trent if he was going to dedicate his gameday performance to his dad. He said 'No. My dad was a pretty low key guy and that how I think he would have wanted it.' Before the game, he took flowers up to the section where his dad sat and put a note saying "Jim Green, we love him and miss him". One of the classiest things I can remember about him.
-------------------------------------------------
*On a side note, jesuslizard made a comment about the Robert Geathers hit back in 2006. They said that Geathers wasn't fined because the Bengals were an up and coming team and that would have looked bad. I kinda agree with that statement but I believe the biggest reason that Geathers got away with it was because Green wasn't the superstar quarterback of the league. If that would have happened to Brady or Manning (who were the biggest names at the time), then Geathers would have gotten in way more trouble. But since it was TG and not Peyton, they just looked away. That really pissed me off.
*I agree with everyone. If he becomes a broadcaster he will be a stud. I remember watching him on NFL Live one time and he was helping to break down this offensive play and he was just awesome. Seriously get rid of that ass clown Tom Jackson and put TG in!
Thank you for everything Trent! Cheers!

He seriously has too much to offer to be a broadcaster...
In football terms. He needs to be like a tank of water, water being football knowledge, and he needs to let players sponge him dry, sponges being the guys he is coaching….I know its a lame attempt at an analogy. Anyways, Trent Green is a one of a kind QB. He has done it all. Starter, Backup, Injured clip board holder….everything. He would be the guy I would be calling up to be my QB coach at any cost. He has outstanding QB IQ as mentioned above. He also seemed to be a really good team player.
I hope Trent doesnt waste his time in a broadcast booth. He could really help some young QB’s in this league.

Green would have been a superstar
if he would have put up the numbers he did in San Fran, Dallas, NY, Chicago…anywhere but KC. but not being a superstar fit him just fine. if Cassel turns out to be another Trent Green, KC is going to be just fine.

Without Carl Peterson there, I doubt it.
I think he should be though.

Just the stats say no but the person he is says yes as
this is the only team that he really had a chance to show his stuff on.
Here or nowhere IMO

I disagree
in 2000 when Kurt Warner got injured, and Trent stepped in, he threw for over 2000 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 picks…in 8 games. Those are pretty sweet numbers. And in 1998, he did an awesome job for the Redskins.
He came back from a HORRIBLE knee injury and performed. It took a horrible head injury to take him out. But for those few years he got to start, each time he was money.

In KC he went 48-40
I don’t know about anywhere else. But you can’t deny the fact, he did his job and did it well.
You put Trent Green on the Baltimore Ravens of that era instead of Grbac or Dilfer..D-Y-N-A-S-T-Y
one of the best 8th round picks ever.

I wonder if he'd still be our QB if he had never gotten injured...

In my opinion
yes. those three straight years of 4000 plus yards are pretty damn impressive when you look at the other 7 QBs to achieve that feat.
in 2003, give trent green an average defense, no question they would have been in the SB. they could have beaten the Pats.

Nope, way wrong
Lowery in 2009

Lowery and Trent seem similar
and if Nick deserves it Trent probably does to.
Is Joe Delaney on Ring?
Don’t get to go to games much anymore.

yep, in 2004
they bent the rules for that. a player had to be on the team for four years to make it, unfortunately Delaney was only around for two, but, when you sacrifice your life to try to save three children, that rule seems pretty stupid.
i was ashamed of the Chiefs that it took so long to do it.
his jersey hasn’t been retired, but it hasn’t been worn since his death.

dude,
of course not. you moved the debate into an different direction that needed to be done. i think the idea of Green being an all-time Chief great is an important topic. probably needs it’s own post.

Looking
Arrowhead has an extensive “ring of fame” around the deck walls listing all the Chief’s greats.
Being a Monday night game of course added electricity to the affair, and the Chiefs did an extensive fireworks show prior to the game. Also, kind of a cool thing – at the end of the national anthem, the crowd substitutes the word “Chiefs” for the word “brave” at the end of the song and shouts it out. These folks bill themselves as “the loudest stadium in the NFL”. Well there are those who talk the talk and others who walk the walk. Like most NFL games this place is loud, but nowhere near the loudest we have heard.
Cool Chant….during the slow part of Rock and Roll Part II ( you know… da da DA DUH….Hey!) The entire stadium chants " we’re gonna beat the hell outta you, you….you, you, you!!!"

" If that would have happened to Brady or Manning (who were the biggest names at the time), then Geathers would have gotten in way more trouble. "
Weird how Brady got injured and Pollard was never fined…Besides that, I thought your post was really good..But yeah I think the fact that Pollard was never fined for his hit on Brady pretty much ruins the argument

not like you guys can't use youtube
but here’s the hit, I think. Grainy but you can really see his head plunk the ground. Seems cheap to me – had clearly begun sliding and no attempt made to let up

Green and Warner
are two examples of how good QBs are often underrated. We don’t realize how good they are until we set the table for ’em properly. After Vermeil left, St. Louis started going downhill, and suddenly Bulger was the starter, because he did a little better in a fairly shitty situation. Warner shows up in Arizona and makes it all the way to the SuperBowl.
Vermeil really knew what he was doing with his QBs. And he knew how to surround them with talent.
