New Chief Brown transformed into football player at Missouri
Brown was so huge there was no wondering why he’d been designated a "man mountain" at Mizzou. He had muscles you couldn’t have Photoshopped on the first two photos. He looked big. He looked strong. He looked like a different person.
"I put on 100 pounds to play football," he said with a laugh.
Here's to hoping that this guy becomes another gem that Don Pioli found in the fifth round. I'm always optimistic right after the draft about our picks, especially since our offensive line was quite .....ahm...offensive!
I look forward to seeing Colin develop and become another piece to the puzzle of our O-line.
Instead, everyone discovered some things in the long shot: Footwork and size, athleticism and the ability to be very, very good. Brown put on 100 pounds that first year. He saw some playing time his second year, including as a reserve left guard. He started all 13 games in 2007. He was downright great last year.
By the time he graduated, he was a 335-pound behemoth projected to go anywhere from the fifth round to undrafted. He’d seen bowl wins and Border War showdowns. He’d learned to battle with the best in the trenches and protect his quarterback. He’d long since given up basketball. He’d fallen in love with football.
This guy is HUGE! Colin Brown is #61. Plus that's Grunhards old number.

When you make all your other o-line buddies look small
that’s a very good thing =)
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I hope #77 plays fullback
Standing next to Brown makes him look like 5-10"

So what are his negatives?
There has to be a reason he fell to us so late in the draft.

Played in a spread
probably raw
doesn’t come from a school known for producing solid o-linemen
Missouri only broke on to the national scene recently
I just hope he can unseat McIntosh.

Be sure
there was no ‘falling’. He was a reach in the draft and there were much better offensive lineman on the board in Round 5, but evidently Pioli see’s something in Brown which is why he reached for him

I think Pioli picked him in Round 5
because he thought he wouldn’t be there in Round 6…
And remember, he’s only a “reach” if Mel Kiper is a better talent scout that Scott Pioli… =)

I can see that
it was just tough seeing his name called while Jamon Meredith & Duke Robinson were still there

I understand
but in Pioli we trust, right?
Look at NE’s starting O-line
Light – Round 2 #48
Mankins – Round 1 #32
Koppen – Round 5 #164
Neal – Undrafted (from freakin’ Cal State-Bakersfield nonetheless =) )
Kaczur – Round 3 – #100
Let’s hope Brown is a Round 5 guy who can turn into a solid starter

Plus, the story would be so smarmy they'd make a movie out of it
This kid from Asscrack, MO (population eleventy-one) has been a Chiefs fan his entire life, he goes to college in his home state, and ends up being a Pro Bowl Right Tackle for the very team he loved as a kid?
Disney would hop all over that shit =)

In Pioli We Trust?
No, I never said that. That’s what all the cool kids have been saying. It still remains to be seen if Pioli is another Belichick lackey or if he indeed was part of the braintrust in New England that won them 3 championships. We have a hunch, but the record for Patroits personnel that have gone onto other cities and franchises is not impressive. The draft quite candidly was a let down and Belichick demonstrated once again he’s the master puppet. Seeing how the Eagles were also able to own the draft there’s no reason we couldn’t have done the same. The only move we made was for an unknown TE/FB in the 7th round that we likely could have signed undrafted and morever probably won’t be on the team in 2 years.
I’m certainly giving him the benefit of the doubt and have infinitely more faith in his talent evaluation abilities than I did Peterson, but so far he hasnt earned blind faith support from this Chiefs fan

Oh, I also meant to say
that its quite possible Pioli thought the players we selected were essential to building this team and that he couldnt afford to gamble on them by trading picks with hopes they’ll still be on the board. There’s no way of knowing what went on in the war room. I’m just saying don’t color me impressed and that we still have a full season of football to play before you would ever catch me uttering the words “In Pioli We Trust”

I was a little disappointed after the draft also
I was expecting the wheeling and dealin’.
I try and remind myself that if we walk away from this draft with at least 3 future starters we would have had one heck of a draft day. If Jackson and McGee turn out to be studs with the additions of Cassel along with Vrabel, 2009 could be one the best drafts in Chiefs history (next to ‘63,’67,’69 anyways).

you know what i find the most hummorous
is that just before the draft everyone was so excited making statements about how Pioli has a nack for the unexpected and regardless of what happens we couldn’t go wrong. now that the draft is over i hear a ton of whinning. not everyone is saying the daft sucked, but i’d like to know what happened to the 52 million people that said we couldn’t go wrong and if Pioli picks the unexpected then why so surprised by the pick.

In Pioli you better trust
You have no choice to trust Pioli, unless your going to stop being a chiefs fan (please dont), You gotta have faith, what else are you going to have?

Pioli....
likes raw projects in rounds 4-7 that could explode as great players. Chances are most of these guys won’t do much, but there is more a possibility that these “raw” players have it in them to be great. Duke Robinson and Meredith will be mediocre to above average players in the league. Washington could be the next Samuels, Brown could be the next Micheal Roos and Lawerence could be the next Colston. Probably won’t happen, but chances are that these guys will over well coached, big program, seasoned guys whose ceilings have fairly obviously been reached in terms of collegiate play. I like his drafting style.

Not a run blocker
The spread offense isnt a running offense when you look at it. Even though they did run the pistol which does run the ball. He hasnt done any run blocking that can translate to NFL blocking

Brown strikes me as a developmental player
But from the sounds of it he has the potential to be a stud!
I also agree with PVChiefsfan about New England’s drafting record: they have found quality linemen in later rounds. I’m liking this so far.

Speaking of NE's O-line.
Does anyone know how long it took them to develop? I’m curious as to what a reasonable time frame to see this guy step up would look like.
Does anyone see him winning a starting position this year?

We already have developmental players
in Taylor and Richardson. I see Brown as the type that could start right away. He was easily Mizzou’s best O-lineman AND he’s enormous. I think working with Bill Muir in training camp will turn him into a starter by the time the season starts.

Wouldn't that be something .... if Brown did start at least half way through the season?
The RT should be the best run blocker of the the two tackle positions. I don’t know how he is against the run?
His pass blocking should be adequate since he did come from a spread offense.

and his run blocking should be adequate
since he’s 6’8" and weighs 335 effin’ pounds!
I mean, damn, that is one huge white dude!

one thing i find impressive about brown
is he’s 335 pounds of soild muscle. he’s a flippen brick wall. i’m not saying other linemen arn’t strong, but they usually have the Lineman-Gut going on, whereas Brown does not. look at his buddy 71 next to him. even 77 and 78 look to have some pudge. to be over 300 pounds and not have a gut is impressive.
