Brodie's last stand....

Does Brodie Croyle have a chance.... Nobody wants to talk about the possibility that he might be our be our starting OB. I think he's going to come out fighting for the job and I don't see anybody to beat  him out.  I think the kid really wants to play.  Maybe his injuries are behind him and he has a good run at it.  Who knows?

Even though he hasn't played a lot  I think he has experienced a maturation prossess  and has that behind him.  I  think he has the potential to be a leader for a long time and could take us to another level.  I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in traning camp and preseason.

I also don't think the coaches have given up on him.  I think Chan Galey has an offense ready and waiting for Brodie.

yeah...

I’m hoping this is just a cry for help, or a joke.

by no means is Croyle competing for anything other than the #3 QB spot… which I hope he doesn’t get.

He’s had a couple of chances, and showed nothing but injuries.

You know we traded for Matt Cassel right?

ahahaha

I wanted to ignore this entire fanpost but I just can’t resist

While I do believe Brodie has the rocket to compete in the NFL he cannot be an NFL QB. His frame is weak, it’s not so much whether or not he’s back from injury it’s how long will he be able to play until his next. Brodie is a solid option as a #3 QB, able to step in and perform well while the #2 or #1 heals up for a few drives but nothing more

Yeah, Nanz. That sums it up.

Maybe he’ll surprise us and stay on the field the next time he gets on it, but, at best, he should have to wait behind Cassel and Thiggy to go down, before he takes to the field, again.

Love the way he moves and the way he delivers the ball. But his brain is always writing checks his ass can’t cash. And when I point the finger, 3 fingers are pointed back my way. My body’s covered with the scars that come of confusing what I want to do with what I’m remotely capable of doing.

Seriously….Brodie has the build of a pre-pubescent teen…He cant play in the NFL…we have seen that…it is like 4 serious injuries in 2 active seasons…right?

I had ..........

high hopes for Brodie at the start of last year, even told my little brother his team better watch out (his team being the Broncos )! Brodie has a great arm and it’s to bad he cant hold up! Man why do the Chiefs have such bad luck finding a QB that can get it done in the playoffs? We always get a guy that does a good job until the playoffs and he chokes,is it the coaching or what!? Everytime we get a guy from another team that shows some talent, he just ends up being a prick tease! I know Cassel seems to be a step above some of our QB’s of the past but i get the same feeling with him, please god let him be the one!

Poor Brodie

I actually feel bad for Croyle. When I read that article last year about him crying into his wife’s shoulder after our offensive line let his leg get destroyed, I really appreciated what the guy had gone through.

He busted his ass in the offseason from what I understand. He was at the stadium everyday breaking down tape. It sucks it didn’t work out for him. I believe I read thathe even put on about 7 pounds of muscle before last season. His frame was just too frail.

If you watched the Pats game from last year you will see what I mean. Brodie hurts his shoulder in that game from what was not a particularly devastating hit. I believe it was Seymore that kind of knocked him down and fell on top of him. Brodie landed right on his shoulder sure, but his body couldn’t handle Seymour’s weight falling on top of him. That is football. Big guys fall on you, even the QB.

Even if Croyle came out playing like Joe Montana in training camp, even if he was throwing 99-yard strikes through double coverage, the Chiefs wouldn’t start him. Unless the offensive linemen have handguns to keep the defense back there is no chance of him making it through a season. He is going to get hit and he is going to get hurt. You can put on muscle but your frame has limitations.

I like Brodie, I think he was a good Chief. I think he is a good option to have as a backup in an emergency situation but beyond that he is too risky to the Chiefs. No matter how much he might improve this off-season, to start him over more durable QB’s when he you know the odds are terribly low that he will make it through the season, is folly. The Chiefs have had enough turbulence at the QB position. Cassel and Thigpen are much more reliable options in the health department and to be honest, on the field. I saw Brodie make some really sweet passes but only a few. This is partly due to the fact that Herm made him throw the ball sideways and behind him most of the time. Thigpen and Cassel have proven at least, that they can competently throw the ball down field in NFL games.

Croyle already had his last stand. He was given more chances than most to succeed. He has the arm to be a starter but not the body.

by Patrick Allen on May 29, 2009 8:34 AM CDT reply actions

I agree with you...sort of.

When it comes to mechanics and talent, Croyle IS probably the best QB on our roster.
When you say “Thigpen and Cassel have proven they can throw the ball downfield” I will agree about Cassel. I like Thigpen but, mainly because he plays with passion and heart. He wants to win badly but, doesn’t really have all the tools right now.
He needs to develope his play as far as throwing downfield with accuracy. I think he will eventually be a great QB if he keeps working on his game and getting some good coaching. But, he will probably be a late bloomer like Rich Gannon before he really gets a chance to be a starter.

by Chiefsfan1970 on May 29, 2009 8:58 AM CDT reply actions

Thigpen threw down field. He wasn’t always perfect but he threw more touchdowns than INTS. I wasn’t really advocating Thigpen’s play as I was the lack of evidence we have of down field passes from Croyle. He threw so few.

Go to that site with the Chiefs games and watch the Pats gamefrom last year again. He makes a couple of decent passes to Tony but there is a ridiculous amount of passes where he turns and throws it sideways.

F’ing Herm.

Run, Run, Sideways Pass.
Run, Run, Sideways Pass.
Run, dump pass to Charles, Run.
Run. Sideways Pass. Sack. (Because the first 2 plays got 3 yards)

Probably better for us that Herm was Croyle’s coach. Someone with a brain might have used him better and we might have seen him look really good for a few quarters before he got hurt. That would have made the whole thing harder. At least we’ll never be sure if he would have been a stud or not. I chose to think he would have been a bust anyway.

by Patrick Allen on May 29, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Brodie will be the backup

I really believe that once Pioli feels that Brodie is healthy enough, he is going to move Thigpen. I really have rooted for Thigpen but the more I review the 2008 games in which he played, he showed some glaring weaknesses. The two key’s being decision making and accuracy. While overall he got better throughout the seaon those two things plagued him all year. The lack of accuracy was most notable on deep balls and without TG for the short stuff, we will need QB’s that can go downfield when needed. Like I said, I have always rooted for Thigpen but if Pioli can receive decent value, take it . . .

by Dallas Chief on May 29, 2009 9:00 AM CDT reply actions

You think he was worth the 3rd rounder?

When I see the guys taken after him, Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Brandon Marshall, hell even Stephen Gostkowski I can’t help but think of Herm’s incompetence. Brodie had serious injury concerns coming out. Had we not got hustled into giving up a 4th rounder for Herm we could have picked Croyle in the fourth.

a little harsh

but, I can’t argue with this point

by stagdsp on May 29, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Herm's job was supposed to be to bring our defense back to glory.

We ALL know how that turned out. he never claimed to be a good offensive coach. You could tell that by watching his Jets teams.
The selection of Croyle in the third round could have gone either way. Had it not been for his injury history, he would have been a first rd pick. He really is a good player.
If you want to truly sum up the ineptitude of Herm Edwards, all you have to do is watch our defense last year. Had he been willing to give the reigns to Gunther the same way he did Chan Gailey around the middle of last year, we would have won at least a handful more games. His stubbornness is what really hurt the defense.

by Chiefsfan1970 on May 29, 2009 9:36 AM CDT reply actions

There is no evidence that Croyle would have been a top NFL QB. He never stayed on the field long enough. Having a good arm doesn’t mean jack if you are throwing it to the guys on the other team. He had the tools, sure, but ig you have a hammer and nails and no wood, you can’t build a house.

The only wood Croyle has is when his wife is around.

Paddy

by Patrick Allen on May 29, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

BS, Herm's job was to win.

You don’t come in as a head coach to only turn around one side of the ball.

I do not snort the coke I only smoke...sensimilla.

by HIV 2 Elway on May 29, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I hear what your'e saying but....

seriously, the Brodie Croyle pick in the third rd could have gone either way.
When Herm Edwards first started at KC, he said “his #1 goal was to turn the defense around”. That IS why he was hired. I understand that the head coaches job is to win. Anything else is ridiculous. It is just like any other draft pick. If Croyle turned into the next Manning or Brady, he would have looked like a genius. If Croyle turns out to be a bust due to injury concerns (which seems to be the case) then it looks like another bonehead move by Coach Edwards.
I still would not say that picking Croyle sums up herm’s ineptitude. I think there is plenty of other evidence to support that fact.

I will still say this: If Croyle was able to stay healthy, he would be a kick ass QB. His mechanics are there he obviously has a great arm, accuracy, decision making, poise. If I saw Croyle sitting there in the third round and I thought some other team might take him knowing my team needs a QB, I would have probably taken a chance on him. i don’t think he will be a starter for us but, I would not at all be surprised if he wins the backup job.

Hey man..lighten up.

Seriously, everybody’s bored and there is no real news so all we have to do is come on here and talk about Brodie Croyle.(wow, it does sound pretty bad now that I am reading it out loud.)

Anyway, all I am saying is that he is a talented QB. I would never say that he is better than Matt Cassel although, I do think he’s better than Thiggy. I am also well aware of his injuries and understand that you could not count on him to even get through a game at this point so, it is a moot point.

by Chiefsfan1970 on May 29, 2009 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay I apologize, i was too serious about that one.

In regards to thiggy vs. brodie, I’ll let stats and results speak for themselves…Thiggy did a lot more for the offense than brodie ever did. You can’t blame the losses on thiggy because the defense was the worst in the league..Brodie had a better defense than thiggy ever had. Remember: 2007 defense was atleast mediocre. 2008 not so much

by CALIFAN1986 on May 29, 2009 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think that Croyle will compete this season

But he does have an NFL arm, and quite frankly, that is enough for him to stay in the NFL. He was head and shoulders above Thigpen in our traditional offense last year (seriously, in pre-season it wasn’t even a close competition). I think we need to remember that one of the biggest reasons Thigpen had success was that we tailored the offense to him and his strengths, and the NFL defenses had not seen what we were doing very much. If we hadn’t traded for Cassel, we would all be arguing about the viability of the Arrowspread, etc. But even though we believe that our new Offense will be pass happy, it will be more traditional, possibly 3 wide receiver sets, and we will set up play action with the run.

Best case scenario for Brodie, and believe me, I am not a huge fan, is that he does hold that clipboard for 2-3 more seasons, and then we all might discover his real value. Some guys just do not blossom as quick as you would want them too. All I am saying is that I have not completely given up on Croyle as and NFL QB, I just think it will be years down the road.

by TheQ on May 29, 2009 10:08 PM CDT reply actions

There's always a chance

But Brodie has ALWAYS had injury issues. I really feel like the chances of him not getting injured are so low that it isn’t even worth considering. Sure he may be ready for the #1 spot someday, but I may also may win the lottery tomorrow. I don’t consider either of those things possibilities in the real world so you won’t catch me even hoping for anything for Croyle.

I guess I only hope that he stays on the team so that Kelly stays in KC.

"...Said he couldn't go on the American way"

by Jux on May 30, 2009 2:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Ha. That is one good reason!

I don’t know what it is, but imagine 3 or 4 years from now (he might even be on another team), written off for dead, a starter goes down to injury and Croyle comes in and leads his team to victory. His stock soars (it amazes how “right now” we are when it comes to football players) and lands a starter job somewhere and has a decent career. It could happen. I agree that Croyle’s body may never allow him to have a NFL career also, but right now it is 50/50. He needs a few more years to mature and condition himself. But I would take him over some other hopefuls, if he can stay healthy. Big if.

by TheQ on May 31, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

BTW, this is really cracking me up

that I am one of Croyle’s biggest supporters on this thread. I never thought he was ready to be “the guy” and I am thrilled that we have Cassel. I guess I am just not ready to completely write the guy off.

Good luck Brodie.

I never thought I would say this but...

The Chiefs are actually really deep at the QB position. Seriously, I think this is the best we have ever been as far as that goes as far as I can recall.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jun 1, 2009 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

We truly are

as deep as we have been in awhile. After last season, where we were down to emergency guys and signing people off the street, I would say we are pretty set at the QB position. It is interesting that we still have Ingle Martin on the roster. Maybe they see some value in him too?

by TheQ on Jun 1, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Ingle will get plenty of work in Camp.

I agree with the depth at QB. Actually any one of the top three could threaten to start, in a good way, he says. Our depth in past was Starter, a known solid backup and WTF.
Exceptions would be Dawson and Livingston, and Gannon and those other guys.

Yeah, I would think Martin is a camp arm

unless they are only going to keep Croyle this season and not resign him. Then they might have some interest in keeping him to be 3rd string next year. I really think they will keep Thigpen as a solid #2. You can never have enough QBs.

Brodie

should probably try arena football or the euro league, I know it may sound funny, but it’s obvious to me and most that he can’t stay healthy in the NFL. I’m not saying it is 100% that he will get hurt if he plays, but the odds are really high in the favor of injury. I think he might have a better chance where the guys aren’t as big, don’t hit as hard, and haven’t taken their talent to the next level, IE Arena football and Euro League…………..He can absolutely take the third spot on our club. I would actually prefer it, that gives us three valuable players at the position. Although Cassel still has to prive himself on a different team, I’m confident he will do so this coming season. Tyler is our best option for #2 handsdown, he can change the pace of the game and switch upm the style of offense and keep the defense guessing. Now, God forbid both of those guys go down…..Does Brodie get his shot? Hell Yes he does…End of Story

by RedDawn on May 30, 2009 10:22 AM CDT reply actions

Let's look at it this way

Matt Cassel is getting paid $14 million. Nobody but Matt Cassel is going to start for this team unless he gets his ass handed back to him on a stretcher. Doesn’t matter what anyone says to the contrary.
