Chris from Springfield, Mo. wants to know if Tyler Thigpen has a chance to be the Chiefs starting quarterback over the newly acquired Matt Cassel on opening day.
BW: I would be shocked if Thigpen beat out Cassel in training camp. I know the Kansas City brass has said it will be an open competition, but there is little chance Cassel will lose this job. The team is being built around him. Thigpen did a solid job at the start of the second half of last season. Still, the new leadership in Kansas City wants Cassel to be the quarterback of the present and the future. He will get every chance to prove himself.

What roster move
would indicate “this team is being built around him”?

No kidding.
More specifically, what roster move on offense? The trade to get Cassel? Ok…. [rolls eyes]
My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

Only 1 I can think of
Bawby (King of the Hill style) Engram. And he can’t be counted on for more than 1 season with his age, regardless of how young he says he feels.

Hes more help to replace
over the middle loss of TG. Not a building block for Cassel to succeed. Once again, someone at ESPN speaks about something they know nothing about. They are really, really, REALLY pathetic and very agitating to me.

Premeditated
If Bawby was signed to replace TG’s presence over the middle then a TG trade was premediated by Pioli.

I don't doubt that for a second.
Well, in a way at least. Tony’s agent was told they could bring trade offers to the table, but Pioli wasn’t going to spend his time trying to find Tony a way out. Everyone knew Tony wanted out, that wasn’t exactly a secret. If it wasn’t premeditated, Ingram was the insurance plan (or “in-case shit” plan).

well...
I guess you could say Goff, Engram as FA and Brown, Lawrence and Williams from the draft ?
Ok, so nothing too major…
but, there’s no doubt that it is Cassel’s offense.

Brown I will buy
being that he was a tackle from a spread offense but Lawrence & Williams are a reach

I'll admit
Lawrence and Williams are a longshot to “build around” Cassel
Actually, Brown is too.
I have to believe that the new administration is likely waiting to get through some of the offseason to evaluate what they already have on the roster… then they may consider bringing in some other guys to fill any holes they think the team has.
I’m guessing they see enough potential on the team to “coach up” that they aren’t going to panic and bring in a bunch of FAs just yet.
Obviously, we’ll all know who on the current roster isn’t cutting it, when they bring in veteran players to replace them. I’m guessing we’ll have to wait a while, though.

Let's hope not
Silly question. Let’s hope not. Can we get over Tyler Thigpen please, he’s a backup quarterback who played on a terrible team and managed to get through the season not looking like a Pop Warner thrown into a Big XII game. He did an ok, so/so job for an NFL quarterback but let him go. He’s not starting QB material on 85% of NFL teams. Matt Cassel is a top tier QB and there isn’t a chance Thigpen will play a down as long as #7 stays healthy. He’s a so/so backup though.
