ESPN Power Rankings Give No Love to the Kansas City Chiefs
A panel of ESPN writers and bloggers collectively produced their first set of power rankings for the 2009 season. The Kansas City Chiefs averaged out at the 29th spot. Here's how the 12 ESPN writers and bloggers ranked the Chiefs.
| 31 | 29 | 26 | 29 | 31 | 30 | 29 | 25 | 31 | 26 | 29 | 28 |
The highest ranking (25th) came from John Clayton. ESPN's AFC West blogger, Bill Williamson, ranked the Chiefs 29th.
Coming off a 2-14 season, I'd say the ESPN panel ranked the Chiefs appropriately ranging from 25th to 31st. Of course, I would say they're closer to the 25th best team than the 31st.
Here's how the entire AFC West shook out:
| Team | Rank | High | Low |
| San Diego Chargers | 7 | 5 | 11 |
| Denver Broncos | 25 | 18 | 28 |
| Kansas City Chiefs | 29 | 25 | 31 |
| Oakland Raiders | 30 | 27 | 32 |

Sigh
I know the rankings don’t mean jack but I wish we would sign a couple of other guys to help bolster the competition.
I thought for sure we’d sign a few more guys, especially a WR and an O-lineman and maybe a defensive piece.
What do you guys think? Is Slo Po just bein Slo Po or is he done?

I've been waiting for something
I didn’t expect Pioli & Co. to run around signing big-name players, but expected them to do something. Right now, our roster looks too similar to last year for my comfort. We traded for a hopeful improvement at QB, and signed a few old LBs that can start this year but won’t be here long, and a C we think might be able to compete with Rudy who was not very good last year. Seriously, I don’t see how we can expect anybody to give us respect right now. We face a new season with essentially the same team that won 2 games last year. Hlaey and his staff had better be a world better than Herm and his.

Can't really argue with 29th
Until the moves translate to wins, we will continue to be ranked this low

I agree....
We could sign whoever we want, but we are going to be stuck in the cellar of these rankings until we post some Ws.

Plus
May NFL Power rankings are almost as important as male nipples.

Because...
My wife and I have a one month old boy, and during the pregnancy my wife read What to Expect When You’re Expecting and she came across the answer to your question. Men have nipples because the sex organs develop later than the skin tissue, after six weeks. Basically, women have nipples to feed their offspring and for the first six weeks of development the baby is not male or female but has developed its skin tissue which means that nipples are developed too. So later when the baby sex is determined, it already has nipples even if it is a boy and the nipples serve no purpose.
Sorry about the long answer, I was trying to make it easy to understand.

here is bill's explaination...
Kansas City Chiefs
• Power ranking: 29
• Where I ranked them: I kept the Chiefs at 29th. Kansas City has new leadership and a new quarterback. The team will make strides, but I’m just not sure if it will be right away.

i think alot of people will be suprised with the chiefs this upcoming season.
and alot of the so called “experts” will have to put their foot in thier mouths and actually give KC some love.

The awkward position of believing the pundits are wrong but resisting bias
sucks. That said, the main rubrick they use is to just line up the teams by record and then go “ooh ahh wizz bang aren’t I clever” and typically wrong when they rearrange a few of them.
These are the least reflective of a worthless measuring device (amazing how boston and NY are always doing better on a hunch?)

I say to hell with all of the pundits...
They never gives us any love…and this league is too damn topsy turvy to be doing power rankings IN MAY anyways! I think they should do a ranking at Week 4, Week 8, and Week 12…then have thier final rankings before the playoffs…this crap of doing rankings every 20 minutes is B.S. There’s no telling what the teams are going to look like at the end of JUNE let alone the end of AUGUST!!!!

Of course
Parcells in his first years went
3-12-1 Giants
5-11 Pats
9-7 Jets
10-6 Cowboys
So a win and a tie better than last season puts Haley on par with his mentor

I think that a lot of these rankings
are based off of what our team looks like as of last year. I know Pioli is being slow in his approach, but we also have to realize that Herm’s work ethic for the team last year was horrendous. He allowed guys to slack off all they wanted, that is why they loved him.
Haley has been stressing conditioning all off-season, and you have to think that with so much of our raw talent from last year and the new faces will be in much better shape. Plus, we will not be running that stupid Tampa 2 defense either. The offense is up in the air as of right now because I am not sure what to expect with Todd Haley and Chan Gailey.
The WR position is a toss up, and hopefully Haley can muster up some talent in our guys. It will also be interesting to see LJ in the backfield. I think he still has it, and we really don’t have much else to switch to right now.

This makes perfect sense too me...
It didn’t seem like we couldn’t compete with any team in the NFL, it looked like we were tired by the time the 4th quarter rolled around, and the teams in better shape played like they were in better shape, which became even more evident as the season went on.
Though I disagree about LJ, I think the guy is done.
Are you telling me Jesus Christ cant hit a curve ball?

power rankings don't mean much
kinda like mock drafts and blogs :)
I don’t mind this team being underestimated.
But, seriously, if you look at the facts… the Chiefs were VERY close to winning at least 5 or 6 more games last year, right?
Add in a new QB, 2 new LB, a new RG, 2 new DL, a new DC/HC/GM…
I would think all of those things combined should AT LEAST allow them to win the bulk of those close games… so 8-8, 9-7 are not out of reach.

you are what your record says you are
And until we start posting up some W’s, I find it hard to disagree with. I don’t like it one damn bit, but I can’t really disagree. GO CHIEFS!!!

WHAT?!? This is nothing short of disrespect.
You don’t disrespect Joey Porter and you don’t disrespect the Chiefs.
/who cares? we won 2 games last year.

I'm thankful Pioli and Haley haven't gone nuts going after "names."
The Chiefs’ coaching was horrendous last year. It will take some time for them to evaluate their talent and see how they respond to better coaching and higher expectations.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

If Chiefs are to move up, where will the improvement come from?
Will improvement come from:
1. New coaching and schemes?
2. New players – free agents or the draft?
3. Improvement from existing players?
1. We’re all hoping this coaching staff is better. Conditioning. Discipline. Expectations. All seem to be popular reasons. Can’t say that the resumes of the D coaches thrill me, but I am hoping for better synergy among them than in the past. And that Haley can do for the receivers what Herm did for the dbacks.
2. Gotta hope that leadership (Z Thomas, Vrabel, Cassel, Goff) plays a major role, because I don’t expect tons of improvement in actual production from an overall aging cast of characters we’ve added. And while the draft class may be genius in the long run, I’m not counting on much from them in 2009.
3. Improvement from all those young players that were out on Herm’s limb with him last year seem like our best chance to be better this year than last. The coaching and veteran additions (see 1 & 2) actually pay off in this area of improved players, as well. Having said that, whose stock is rising and whose is falling?
Selected Chiefs Players Better In 2009 Than 2008
Tyler Thigpen, Dwayne Bowe, Mark Bradley, Jamaal Charles, Mike Cox, Brad Cottam, Branden Albert, Barry Richardson, Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, T.J. Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali, Brian Johnston, Demorrio Williams, Derrick Johnson, Brandon Carr, Brandon Flowers, Maurice Leggett, Bernard Pollard, Jarrad Page
Same or not as good in 2009
Brodie Croyle, Devard Darling, Jeff Webb, Larry Johnson, Kolby Smith, Herb Taylor, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith, Damion McIntosh, Ron Edwards, Alfonso Boone
Additions (partial list)
Matt Cassel , Bobby Engram, Mike Goff, Tyson Jackson, Alex Magee, Zach Thomas, Mike Vrabel, Monty Beisel
Conclusion: The number of additional wins will come from improvement in existing, young players.

Well thought out
I would hope that some on your ‘same or not as good’ list will see the writing on the wall and STEP up.
I would hope that 2-4 of our draft picks will be a STEP up to what we had last year and produce.
BUT you are right the youngsters need to STEP up now. GM’s, Coaches Don’t play on the field.

Thanks
Note that “same” for some of them is pretty good, such as Waters. I just don’t expect their games to be any better than in the past. So the “improvement” in wins, sacks, etc. has to come from those 2,3 and 4-year players for the most part.
I’ve appreciated Ron Edwards contributions, but with our draft picks, I can’t see him making the final roster. And while I’m yet to be convinced that Haley will make a good NFL head coach, I do respect his nose for receivers — so it’ll be interesting to see what happens to Webb, Darling and the rest.

well i guess being the homer i am
Im gonna call these rankings bs because i think the chiefs are going to be in at least the top 50 percent.
by Grand Master A on May 26, 2009 6:44 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
being homer is good
I certainly don’t believe the Chargers will be 22 power ranking places above the Chiefs at the end of the season. And with possible implosions by the Broncos and Raiders in 2009, the Chiefs could very easily end up above the .500 mark. Will Haley harness and motivate the talent, or divide and alienate the team? Tom Coughlin walked a thin line and came away a Super Bowl winner with the Giants. We’ll see.

only if TJ Houzh. was still a F.A.
i bet would be a bigger target for the Pioli, and Tony G would still be here. Alittle late as always….
