The Greatest Kansas City Chiefs, By The Numbers: #5

About_photo1_medium

via www.aguiarkicking.com

We continue our greatest Kansas City Chiefs by the numbers with #5.  Here are your candidates - all punters.

P Louie Aguiar 1994-1998

P Steve Cheek 2004

P Lewis Colbert 1986-1987

P Case deBruijn 1982

P Jim McCann 1975

P Todd Sauerbrun 2000

Click through a quick write up on each candidate and then vote in the poll.  I can make a pretty good guess as to who will win this one.

Star-divide

P Louie Aguiar 1994-1998

Images_medium

Aguiar played 10 seasons in the NFL including five with the Chiefs starting every game.  Only one of his 421 punts was blocked.  He had a 42.6 yard average in 80 games with the Chiefs.

Chris posted a 'Where are they now?' segment back in February of 2007.  NBC Sports blog even listed him as the greatest player to wear #4 before Brett Favre.

Career stats are here.

P Steve Cheek 2004

Cheek appeared in 12 games for the Chiefs in 2004, his only NFL experience.  He recorded a 39.1 yards per punt average.  He was fairly tall for a punter at 6'4".

Career stats are here.

P Lewis Colbert 1986-1987

Colbert was an 8th round draft pick by the Chiefs in 1986.  He played all 16 games his rookie year and only two his second.  He had an even 40 yards per punt average with the Chiefs.

Career stats are here.

P Case deBruijn 1982

An 8th round draft pick in 1982, Case has probably the most annoying last name for a blogger.  His career totals include one game, five punts for 174 yards.

Career stats are here.

P Jim McCann 1975

McCann was drafted in the 8th round of the 1971 draft by the San Francisco 49ers.  In 1975, he appeared in three games for the Chiefs.  14 punts and one blocked.

Career stats are here.

P Todd Sauerbrun 2000

Images_medium

He played just one of his 13 NFL seasons with the Chiefs.  He had a nice 44.6 yards per punt average with the Chiefs and a career 44.1 average.  Unfortunately he played for the Broncos for two seasons.

That, coupled with the fact that he was busted for taking steroids (yeah, he's a punter) makes it hard to like this guy.

Career stats are here.

Aguiar

Not only was he a good punter but I remember he would actually run down and make tackles, and not those whimpy punter tackles but full on stand a guy up and take him down kind.

Louie

He wasn’t a guy who would just do his job, he was the kind of guy who would give his left nut for the team.

What?

No Justin Medlock? No Dave Rayner? Blashphemy!

:p

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

Wasn't Aguiar considered

the fourth QB on the depth chart in ’98? He had a gun for an arm.

I still have my Aguiar jersey.

Gotta be Louie

Never missed a game. One blocked punt. Solid average. Not afraid to lay a hit on a returner.

Plus, how many punters do you know of that people will proudly sport a jersey of?

Fake Punt

I was at a Chiefs/Seahawks game in the old Kingdome and the ball was about on the Seahawks 45 and Louie through the ball so high into the air all the way to the end zone for a touchdown! Does anybody remember that? It was wild!

Yep

That’s when the talk about him being the fourth QB started, in case the other three went down in one game…unlikely, but for a punter, nice compliment.

The Big Throw

It was thrown so high into the air I couldn’t believe it, thought that no one would buy it, but every now and then Marty would surprise us. I’d like to see a video clip of it again.

I don't understand

why anyone would vote for anyone other than Aguiar. Seriously? I mean I know everyone is entitled to their opinions but this really seems like it would be no contest.
