Are We There Yet?

I see lots of conversation surrounding the Chiefs cap space. Someone will suggest we're in trouble because were not to the league minimum yet. Another will retort that this is a non issue because no team is ever fined for failure to reach the cap minimum since contract gerrymandering is so easy.

Fine.

But, be that as it may, a question remains:

What in the world is a team with this many holes in it doing only being concerned with hitting the salary cap MINIMUM?!  We have ample cap space left relative to the ceiling and a lack of talent and depth in many places. I assumed that after the draft the Chiefs would go back to moving and shaking in free agency like the did before it. My hopes of seeing that appear to have been dashed. We could greatly use a talent upgrade at WR: Braylon Edwards, Anquan Boldin, and Plaxico Burress are on the marked while we have cash to burn. Our Line is a huge question mark which should be commanding attention but we've neglected it in FA and the draft. Goff is probably the only thing you could call an upgrade. Our pass rush needs help as well and though we've made moves to solidify the core of the defense, we still have odd placements and questions on ability. I don't know anyone who thinks Tamba Hali can out pass rush Julius Peppers.

My point is not to suggest  the Chiefs shold nab any particuar player. I only named names to highlight that the talent pool has not run dry. My gripe is that KC's activity in free agency has come to a screeching halt when our needs and finances justify agressiveness. Can we fix it all right now? no. We do; however, have the capacity to plug more holes or mage more upgrades than we have thus far. As an impatient little football fan riding in the family van that is the NFL offseason, I'm asking "are we there yet?" as far as building a competetive team. At this juncture, I deperately hope Papa Pioloi's answer is "no."
