OTA Update 5/22
"There were some encouraging signs."
That was Todd Haley’s assessment of his team’s first week of OTA practices that ended on Friday with a 90-minute workout in the muggy outdoors.
– Draft choice WR Quinten Lawrence finally showed a flash of his speed, catching a nice ball on a long pass from QB Ingle Martin. Lawrence ran fast smooth.
– On the very next play, QB Matt Cassel tried to hook up on a similar play with WR Dwayne Bowe, but the play was covered perfectly by CB Brandon Carr. The difference in speed between Bowe and Lawrence was striking.

Wonder where Tamba & LJ were
By the sound of it, it still seems to me that LJ will have a spot on the roster coming opening day

It does
sound like LJ is in from the comments.
It also sound like Vrabel is still on board with playing here.
There is video up on the Chiefs home page with Q&A from Haley
It does sound like Vrable
is on board, but reluctant to not show up. Hopefully it is just so he can be with the kiddos before he moves out west.
I guess we will find out come mandatory practices in a couple weeks
Vrabel
I’m guessing he had off-season surgery on his shoulder. Haley said something like, “We’ll see where he is.”
We’ll see.

i think you're confusing...
the fact that there was a “strike” on the play rather than LJ making the team.
Even Haley's praise is ambiguous.
I think his comment actually said “chance to make the team” or words to that effect. Listen closely, towards the end, there. It’s easy (and I’m more guilty than most) to start having SB and HOF dreams from the slightest twitch of an eye muscle during these slow stretches.
If the WRs and right side of the o-line bring game, the Chiefs would have a great 1-2 punch, with him in there. His power and durability would be a real asset to such a team. Not a good fit for last year’s squad. They were too easy to scheme against with LJ in the lineup. I thought Charles’ multiple threats gave defenses more pause than LJ’s one-trick pony show. But NO KC RB was in a good situation last year.
Would be nice
If Waters was also “checking in” and if he was I’m sure Haley wouldve said so. Maybe he’s infact staying away because he’s still bent. Hope we see him when camp starts because the oline needs him.
Defense is going to be exciting...
Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast has put in a lot of defense this week, as the Chiefs worked on the dime defense during their walkthrough and the nickel in most of the team sessions. Even in its most basic form it’s obvious that everyone needs to quit trying to put this defense into a 3-4 hole or 4-3 hole. It’s going to be a lot of things, and it’s going to change from game to game, heck from down to down based on what they showed on Thursday. One defensive set in the dime had six defensive backs and five guys standing at the line of scrimmage.
Maybe they’ll get in punt block formation like in Tecmo Bowl!
Negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full...
What is that defense called...?
New England does that sometimes…the prowl or something like that…someone help me.
Maybe they’ll get in punt block formation like in Tecmo Bowl!
..not part of the quote

Punt Block Formation
That was one good thing Herm brought (I am assuming Herm brought it, since I never saw us do it before him)
I remember the first time we used it…Rivers had no freakin’ clue what was happening. And we continued to use it…rarely did we run an all out blitz from it; in fact, I think we only rushed 4 from it most of the time, but you never knew which 4
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.
what did i tell yall
quetin lawernce is already making some noise the kid is gonnna b a stud just watch
More positive comments..
On Cottam too today. Not directly based on this write up but from Haleys press conference today. Thats a good sign.
Difference in speed between lawrence and bowe is striking.
That sentence means Lawrence is faster, not that bowe sprouted wings all of a sudden and flies right? Kinda confuses me.
Over and over I am not sure if all the pieces are here for us to be good, in fact I think we have quite a few glaring holes…..but ya know at least it seems like these guys are on the same page, you get the sense that they are becoming a team and getting things done……I look back and man that has been missing from the herm Era.
Striking difference in that Lawrence is quite a bit faster :-)
Though Bowe was never known for his speed.
It sure is refreshing to hear all of the positives coming out of OTAs from all of those that have spoken to the media. You definitely get a sense that everyone is on board to work hard and turn this thing around, which is a sentiment that was never shared throughout all 53 guys in the locker room during the Harm era. Hopefully the attitude will stick and carry over to the regular season.
PS. Hey Waters, get your ass to OTAs. You’re the most sensitive 300+ lb man that I’ve ever seen.
I could get more sacks with my sack
+1 lol how true

Bowe is a quick reciever
but now a very fast one. He can cut in quickly on short over-the-middle type routes. I’ve seen this. I’ve never seen him get past a d-back on a fly route, however. This is where Lawrence is greatly needed. We haven’t had a reciever that can burn downfield past a defender since Dante Hall. And, for the record, the 40-yard dash doesn’t measure the top end speed of a reciever as much as it does the acceleration. Even still, it’s not a good way to measure a player’s speed because tenths of a second can depend striclty on technique that is specific to that drill. If you want to talk 40 times, though, I can say that I read somewhere that Lawrence ran an unofficial 4.2 when he was in college. (clocked by a coach).. so… I can say that’s pretty striking in contrast to Bowe’s time.
Lawrence is always the fastest guy on the field, in every scrap of film on him.
That part should translate to the NFL, but fighting off the jams and hanging on after NFL hits is something we’ll have to wait to see. Doesn’t look as tough as Dante Hall, but looks like he brings more of the WR toolkit than Hall brought. If he looked to scouts like a guy who could fight off an NFL jam, his speed would have made him a higher pick than he was, I reckon. The Chiefs’ other speed threat, Bradley, also has toughness questions to answer.
Nah
