Where's the Rush? (Cruel Summer Edition)
From the FanPosts. -PT
Long, Cruel indeed! I absolutely cannot wait for Football season to begin! Know this, you will forget this post, but you will not be able to get that song out of your head! :)
As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, I thought I would ask a question that I asked last season: Where is our Pass Rush going to come from? Somewhere in the locker room at One Arrowhead Drive I am sure there is a sign that reads "Sack Artist Wanted, All Applicants Welcome". 10 Sacks. That is the final total from a miserable 2008 season. 10 whole sacks. You have to get to #106 before you see a Chiefs player even listed in the Sack Leaders from last season, and that is Tamba Hali with 3. You would think some of our D lineman could have tripped into opposing QBs more times than that? By contrast the Dallas Cowboys led the NFL with 59 sacks and one of their players had twice as many as the whole Chiefs team (Demarcus Ware had an impressive 20 sacks). We all realize how important this stat, or lack thereof, is in the game of football.
Last season I felt that the serious lack of putting ANY pressure on opposing quarterbacks severely affected our abilitly to close out games. How many times were we leading, or in a game, only to watch the other team come back and win? Heartbreaking! If we could have made it just a little more difficult on those guys, we might have been able to steal a few of those contests. Favre, Brees, and Rivers all notched a win against us because they could sit back in the pocket and pick us apart. I know Mr. Pioli realizes this, but besides picking up Mike Vrabel in the #7 trade, who on our current roster will be an upgrade in this area? Will our new scheme help us notch more sacks? Or is the somewhat improbable Peppers to KC trade still a possibility? None of these seem like a lock to provide solid answers at one of our biggest weaknesses.
Looking at the roster doesn't exactly instill great confidence that this season will be much better, although it could hardly be worse. Here are some career sack numbers for some of the veterans currently on the roster:
| Zach Thomas | 20.5 career sacks |
| Mike Vrabel | 55 career sacks |
| Tamba Hali | 18.5 career sacks |
| Ron Edwards | 13.5 career sacks |
| Alphonso Boone | 12.5 career sacks |
| Derrick Johnson | 12 career sacks |
| Monty Beisel | 4.5 career sacks |
| Turk McBride | 1 career sacks |
| Glenn Dorsey | 1 career sacks |
| Brian Johnston | 0 career sacks |
| Tank Tyler | 0 career sacks |
Best Hope: Mike Vrabel and Tamba Hali. As the roster stands right now, these two stand the best chance of leading the team in sacks in '09. They are also our current 1st Team OLBs, and both have experience rushing the passer. Are they quicker, faster, stronger than some of the young guys on the roster? Who knows? But they definitely know what it takes to get it done. It is interesting to note that the most accomplished guy, Vrabel, accumulated 22 of his 55 sacks in just two seasons, and averaged 3.3 sacks over his other 10 NFL seasons. Tamba Hali has regressed every season of his professional career and seems to struggle with knee and foot problems that hamper his pass rush abilitly. You could also add Tyson Jackson to this list based solely on his #3 overall draft status, but I don't think he will be asked to be a pass rusher as much as we would like. 4-5 sacks would be a great rookie season for T.J.
Biggest Question Marks: Glenn Dorsey, Turk McBride, and Derrick Johnson. We have all talked about whether or not Dorsey can play the 3-4 Defensive End position. If he cannot, what are we going to do with him? He swears he can do it, but I want to see it to believe it. Turk is getting a look at OLB even though I feel he is better suited to play the end position. I am not sure if he can play without his hand on the ground, and if he can, how fast can he make the transition? D.J. has got the physical attributes to get after the QB, but moving him to ILB should regulate him to a partime blitzer. You could argue that there is a whole lot of other question marks on this defense, and you would be right. But I feel these three can contribute to our sack totals, I am just not sure if they will.
Darkhorse Candidates: Brian Johnston and NewChief91 Pierre Walters. Calm down all you Greenwood, Gales, Robertson, and Studebaker fans! I gotta go with my gut here, and I like Johnston in the situational pass rusher role. He has some serious speed, and if he worked hard this offseason, he could find his way to the QB quite a few times. Mr. Walters has great size for an OLB, and has some College sack stats to back up this pick. Out of the slew of undrafted prospects, I like him the best. I think it is this picture of him that sells it:
He is quite the imposing figure on the football field. Keep in mind, that some of our starters are getting a little long in the tooth, and some of these young guys may see playing time sooner than you think. Go get'em Pierre!
Besides personnel, I do think that scheme will increase our sack total this upcoming season. The 3-4 typically disquises blitzes and coverages a little better than the 4-3, and causes opposing Quarterbacks to think twice about where the rush is coming from. But frankly, I am not overly optimistic about Clancy's ability to command a championship caliber defense. Yeah, defensive rankings are overated. Not.
If we hope to be successful next season, we must be able to generate pressure on our opponents. I don't think we will be like the New York Giants, but I am hoping that we at least double our sacks from last season. So here are my keys for success this season: the Front 7 on Defense, anybody who can get 7 sacks, and Matt Cassel (#7). The Lucky Sevens. Sounds easy enough!
Go Chiefs!

Nice Friday post
Funny from last year’s post…
3 Sacks through 4 games. 3 whole sacks, good enough for second to last overall in the league. Starting Defensive Ends Turk and Tamba have 0 sacks. Linebacker Derrick Johnson, reigning AFC Defensive Player of the Week, is the team leader with 1 sack! Johnston and Boone, our back up DEs, have contributed a sack each.
Ha..our back up DEs had more than our starters. Oh geez…

I thought I would try to give us something to debate this afternoon
while trying to finish up some work stuff so I can have some fun this Memorial weekend!
Looking back at that post, I am not sure we are a whole lot better in this area? Potential does not always equal production. Unfortunately.

That's my boy, Q!
Great post. Rec’d.
Alright, Texas Chief, I’m looking at you. We need some of your defensive brilliance in a post too. Q -1, TC – pending.
You have a long weekend to throw down your knowledge, but wait until the work week to post for maximum impact. I’m curious about your thoughts on the defensive comments in Gretz’s Friday recap of the OTAs in markc’s FanShot.
Dime with 6 DBs and 5 at the line…awesome.

I like the -1
it gives me something to shoot for! I am sure TC will come by and roast me. Or at least singe me about something.

lol. That isn't a minus 1, it is a hyphen to denote you have scoreboard over TC.
Q = 1 point TC = pending
:)

I think so too
He just needs some more reps. Do you think he will end up as a OLB or a DE?

OLB

What do you think about Darrell Robertson?
He is the one guy that I really wasn’t sure if he can be a surprise, or be nothing?

D-Rob is who I'm most excited about
I don’t have high expectations for him but I definitely think he’s gonna stick. I have the same optimism for him as I did for Johnston last year (whom showed flashes before his injury). Our sack totals I don’t think would have been as low last year had Johnston not been injured. The switch to the 3-4 scheme is whats gonna increase our pass rush this year and I think D-Rob has a unique opportunity because of it. As for who do I think will have the brighter career here in KC? I’d have to go with Johnston

Didn't he play for the Pats last year? Practice squad?
That makes me feel like he has a really good chance to adjust to our new Defense better than some of the others. Not sure what kind of speed he has though?

As for a surpise
I think out of the all UDFA’s and “camp bodies”, he has the most potential to be our version of the Ravens Bart Scott

Man, I was really hoping we would be able to get Scott
or Dansby. But hopefully some of these guys on the roster will exceed our expectations. There should be a competitive camp battle at the linebacker positions. I am looking forward to it!

I am worried
not about the Special teams:
We will have a battle between Barth and Succop for kicking duties :)
We will have good positional punting and good coverag of it :)
We will tackle well cause the ST coach will make it so :)
not about the Defense:
We have as much depth on the D-line as any team switching 4-3 to 3-4 could expect :)
We have depth in LB corp unlike last year, names don’t matter :)
We have even more depth in secondary, that was strongest part of D, than last year :)
We have a coach that is not Gunther :)
not about the Management/Coaching:
We have a new GM and HC that have a vision beyond “let us not get fired” :)
and apparently Peterson didn’t have vision and didn’t pass to Herm “We might”
But about the 2009 Chiefs Offense:
Cassel/Thigpen in a new scheme with limited weopens :(
Johnson will return/rejuvenate his career this year as power back :(
That Bowe and Engram can provide the O that TG went to Atl with :(
That the Right side of line continues to have Questions Starters and Depth :(
Spending some CAP on a WR and a O-lineman might assuage some doubts.
But we need to get these players to acclimitize them to system ASAP :)

Coming from a 2-14 squad I expect that we have quite a few worries
I like your optimism, I really do! Couple of points I would differ on though. Special Teams. No proven returner, and a good one can really change the field position battle and help your offense. Last year we were very sub par in S.T. coverage as well. I think you’re right, our better depth (provided they stay healthy) should make for an improved unit. I would not be shocked if Succop wins the Kicker spot, solely because he is supposed to have a stronger leg, and Barth’s main struggles were with kick offs.
Defense has quite a bit to overcome. New system and new coordinator. Some players are going to be asked to play an entirely different position. And no pass rush (yet). That is enought right there.
But I completely agree with your O questions. It is not a slam dunk that our Offense will even be average. We need some guys to step up a and lead this team. Also, I am really unsure if Haley can be a motivator.
Do I look worried to you? :)

Torn, but not worried!

The ST and D are coming from such a low base
They have to improve, Please agree they will :)
A KR/PR is such a product of luck we could buy a Lotto ticket, and we did with Lawrence I think.
But where probability helps on ST and D, no training here on such, the O can Regress and sink ship.

I think of UC as Ed Asner
No shit allowed and don’t bring no weak stuff.
I hope everthing is going good for him. And he will be back soon and more often.
I am afraid to take of the Rose-colored glasses. Because Pessimism would SUCK for me :(

Haha!
No doubt! I too hope everything is going well for him. I am sure he will be back in full form come Fall.
There is no point in being pessimistic this early in the game. Training camp is full of of false hopes and high expectations. Just like my golf game!

Nice, Steve.
ST: Return game will change for whole league. No wedge. Switch to 3-4 will help get more LB bodies into coverage.
D: Stronger rotation on d-line. D-Line will play to protect LBs more, and LB corps is stronger. DBs may also get boost from Washington.
O: O-line on the up-tick, plus replacing TG with more of a mauler at TE puts the right side on the up-tick. Biggest issue is at WR. Bowe needs to be more consistent and KC needs a consistent speed threat on the left side. Bowe alone is not going to force many defenses to commit extra hats to the back 40. Agree with your “limited weapons” point, totally.
Mgmt/Coaching: Clark wanted Pioli. Haley is his man. If the Pioli hiring is smart, then the Haley hiring prob’ly is, too. Like the personnel background in Haley. I really like the attention paid to the big men on D, and practicing smart. I’m worried about Waters, though. I’m also worried about WR, but Haley’s track record with WRs is encouraging. But is he a coach who found and developed talent or is he a Cunningham who built his career on early luck in the talent draw?
New Talent: I agree you want the talent in as soon as possible. But it’s still early, and it might be smart to spend some up-front time evaluating the players they have. For instance, what if Hali shows he’ll be dominant? What if Hali shows he has no real home in the 3-4? They’re already looking at 83 (OK, 81) prospects in OTAs. Dorsey still isn’t practicing. Hali missed a chunk of this week’s OTA.

Testing
A Memorial Day weekend Open post to discuss anything that strikes you Fancy. But, remember your loved ones and those that allowed the freedom that you have.
If the powers that be agree :)
We have New movies in the theaters, Interleague play in MLB, Indy, and Nascar. Holiday parties and Hi-Jinks to discuss and disgust. My plans involve the Royals/Cardinals series, the Big12 Baseball championships, the Tigers softball team vs UCLA and some grilling of various meat products and some Natty lite in-between.
Smells good.
And Jackass says have a safe and happy Weekend :)
