If KC’s new scheme were to "set Johnson free," so to speak, it might lead him to the new contract he’s undoubtedly hoping for. Dansby not only led the Cardinals in tackles last year (in both the regular season and playoffs), he tied for second on the team in sacks, forced two fumbles, grabbed two interceptions, had five passes defensed and led the team in tackles for loss. Naturally, he was slapped with the franchise tag.

Johnson is excited about the new defense
He is playing the inside weak position now and likes it. Reminds him of his college days.

Excited........
Johnson obviously didn’t do well in the tampon 2 defense, where it seemed like he was reacting and thinking too much. I still think the guy can be elite in the right scheme…..will this be it I have no idea…..but I am hopeful someone will use him to his potential because DJ + Gunther + Tampon 2 proved disappointing.

I don’t think any player on the defense has had a fair shake, what with the revolving door and sub-par coaching on defense the past umpteen seasons. I don’t think keeping Krumrie was even close to the right thing to do, but at the very least it represents some semblance of continuity at the positional coach spot.

The Odds
The odds that all these draft picks we have spent on defenders over the years, early in the draft, the odds that they are ALL busts is not possible. Some of this poor play has to be coaching and some of it has to be that these guys are young.
We lucked out snagging two good corner backs, who, reason tells me should get better, not worse. We are fine at Safety. Think about it. As BAD as our front 7 was last year there is no way our ssecondary should have performed as well as it did with a bunch of rookies running around back there.
The 2007 team did not go into the season with expectations of losing. They actually ended up starting the season pretty well. Didn’t they start off 0-2 and then win 4 of their next 5? Then a couple of guys got old and the team collapsed.
How were the supposed to go out there in play when Herm was just waiting to thro w Croyle in there? They gave up on any hope of a winning season when he put Croyle in.
Last year Herm fielded a Pee Wee Team.
We have some vet leadership this year. I think it is good we brought in Vrabel, Thomas and Engram. I think it is good we kept Larry. We have brought stability to the QB position again. There will be no questions (hopefully) about who this teams QB will be when the season starts.
This team will have some expectations which is good. Herm was going around last off season saying “We’re gona have some growing pains. They are going to make mistakes.”
You won’t hear Haley saying that kind of crap. Rookie, vet, star or scrub, we’re paying you so get your ass ou ton the field and do your job and do it well or here ’s the door.
I love it. It’s gonna be no Bitch Ass Ness on the Chiefs this year. No more crying to be traded, crying because the guy who is your new butt buddy isn’t playing QB. Just win. Win now.
I think the team will click, finally, probably around mid season. I shall enjoy it.

I've been thinking the same thing about our front 7
there are so many first day picks there that some of them should be able to improve with a change in coaching and/or scheme.
With the acquisitions of Vrabel and Thomas, we have enough talent on defense that if that one something “clicks”, I think our D could surprise a lot of people
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

It's at least...
serviceable. I mean you knew last year was going to be rough with DeMario Williams and Pat Thomas starting for us at critical positions. Not to mention 3 of our 4 defensive lineman were starting for the first time ever and Hali had to switch sides. At least now I believe we have a scheme in place that might play to these guys strenghths. I would rather have a mid 30s on his way out vet starting at key positions than a no name we picked off waivers or a 3rd tier free agent. I think the key word for this year is “serviceable”. Next year, dominant! Also, do you guys think 10 lbs makes a huge difference in strength? Dansby is 250 lbs, but I think DJ is faster. Would you guys prefer speed or strength?

I don't think DJ should bulk up
if this article is correct, the defensive scheme will be constructed to protect DJ from blockers

Williams played well enough
that we shouldn’t rip on him completely. Is he starter material for most teams in the league? No, but I think he’s solid backup material and won’t lose sleep if he has to play at some point in the season. Thomas as a different story all together. He’s practice squad material at best.
Also, if the defense can actually keep blockers from getting to DJ, he should be fine at 240lbs and fast as possible.
