Stats Show the Chiefs are About Average at Pass Protection
After watching 2007's travesty of an offense piddle down the field, the 2008 Kansas City Chiefs were a welcome relief from ineptitude.
One of the most notable improvements came on the offensive line. Branden Albert's addition at left tackle proved to be best move of the '08 draft. After only four 100+ yard rushing games in '07, the Chiefs produced nine of them in '08.
There was a big difference from 2007 to 2008 in pass protection as well. The Chiefs allowed 55 sacks two years ago and only 37 last year. Yes, I know. Tyler Thigpen's scrambling ability was a big part of that improvement but I have to say on an anecdotal level the line was much improved in the amount of time they allowed Thigpen to throw the ball.
So the line did pretty well as a unit last year combined with Tyler Thigpen. How did they do individually?
shanyes41 over at Bolts from the Blue posted a fascinating set of statistics a few days ago on individual linemen rankings in pass protection. The result is a ton of information covering virtually every offensive linemen in the NFL.
Here's how he did it:
So I found the total "Pass Plays" run by every team. This is the number of pass attempts, plus the number of total sacks for the team for the whole year. It doesn't account for pass plays that ended up in a QB scramble for positive yards. I couldn't figure out how to count those or even whether it was a positive or negative thing (since it is basically a sack, without the actual sack, if that makes sense)
I knew how many games each guy started, so I could figure out roughly how many pass plays a guy was involved in by taking games started and multiplying it by pass plays per game for the team. If you take the number of sacks given up and divide by number of pass plays a player is involved in, you get sacks per pass play for a given player.
Sounds easy enough. How did the Chiefs linemen fare? Pretty average overall with some nice surprises. And that average label is not a knock.
Branden Albert came in ranked #13 overall for left tackles in sacks per pass play.
Showing his Pro Bowl form, Brian Waters came in ranked 6th best at the left guard position.
Rudy Niswanger ranks #23 out of the centers. The Chiefs' center last year, Casey Wiegmann, finished #8 and was named to the Pro Bowl as a Denver Bronco.
Kansas grad Adrian Jones just crept into the top ten for right guards. New Chief and former Charger Mike Goff was ranked 23rd. You don't hear people talk much about Adrian Jones. He's a free agent now.
Damion McIntosh, who tied for the 5th most sacks given up by a right tackle, ranked #21.
And now that I'm looking at these again, the Chiefs are little better than average according to these numbers. I know it's been the prevailing wisdom that the addition of veteran Mike Goff will further bolster the line but there are no guarantees. I believe Thigpen's scrambling ability and just athleticism had a lot to do with the statistical improvement of the Chiefs' offensive line. With Cassel, a much more "traditional" quarterback, under center I think this could expose our offensive line as still not quite ready to consistently protect the quarterback.
Thoughts on these numbers?

Cassel scrambles quite a bit
If anything he does a better job of using the broken pocket than Bones who uses more the bootleg run for you life style.

Disagree
I think Thigpen is a much more effective scrambler than Cassel will ever be.

I agree with Chris on this one.
Thigpen was very good on his feet which was one of the main reasons he made it more exciting to watch.

Thigpen's runs were designed/necessitated last year
So yeah as a RB Thigpen’s more effective, but as a QB Thigpen’s average sack yards was 6.2 compared to Cassel’s 4.6 (who was actually sacked far more often).

I'm with the Parade
I’ll repeat my comment that it’s not always the running QBs that are the best at avoiding sacks.
Cassel is a better QB overall, and has good mobility.
Thigpen is a better runner overall, and did a good job considering the situation last year.

Cassel Was A WR at USC For a Year
I Bet that Cassel is faster than Thigpen and is a better quarterback. I like Thigpen as the new “folk hero” but Cassel has it over him in Spades in every area. Don’t Forget that Cassel was a WR for a year at USC and has some very good moves and speed, his runs last year were not by design like Thigpen’s were and he wa also one of the top Rushing QBs.

Im not saying
that Cassel cant scramble he had 270 rushing yards and 2 tds last season I just dont think he is as good on his feet as Thiggy who had 386 rushing yards and 3 tds which isnt a big difference.I do think Cassel is better on his feet than the average qb in the nfl.

If Goff sucks or gets injured
We move around our line. Ghirac will likely jump in at Guard.

Boo!
I’m betting on Ghiaruac not making final cuts

Holy shit
I couldn’t butcher that last name harder if I tried. Should read: Ghiaciuc

???
Those stats just indicate how the line did as a whole, and how the QB did at avoiding sacks, as opposed to actually tracking sacks attributable to each lineman individually… right?

Jones pass blocking ability
was never brought into question, it was always his assingments on run blocking that he blew

Ok
cause I was wondering why we let him go for a guy who did a worse job protecting the passer last year.

Goff may or may not have been worse at protecting the passer… but the Chargers OL did a worse job when he was in there.
I think it’s hard to evaluate one individual lineman’s performance based on the team’s number of sacks and number of passing plays.

or, even sacks attributed to one guy… the OL is a team, and sometimes sacks get credited to one guy, though it was someone else’s missed block

I agree
Maybe Adrian Jones is partly responsible for Sackintosh’s stats and thats why he’s on the street.

Unorthodox as it may be
I think the starting RT position should be decided by a pancake eat-off between D-Mac & Colin Brown. To the winner go the spoils

I think these posts, taking penalties into account, and sacks attributed to each lineman may tell more about how to evaluate these guys than the ones in this post.
This post (rec’d) IS a better indicator of how an OL as a whole performs, when each of the parts are out there. Who cares if the Chiefs have a couple of all pro OL, if the offense can’t move the ball? OL success is very much about continuity and experience, about a unit working well together and being well coached.
However, there are other factors to consider…
*Like another year of experience for Rudy, Herb and B Rich… They may have struggled in their first year, but with better coaching and a year of experience they may get much better. The 2nd year for Albert should be even better than his rookie year as well.
*This post shows sacks given up by an offense, which is largely (but not SOLELY) due to the performance of the OL. Teams that struggle with too many sacks often: play from behind, have worse defenses, don’t have stability at QB or RB, and have preditable play calling, etc. give up more sacks than average.
*Cassel may run less than Thigpen, but it’s not the “running QBs” that help teams and OL’s avoid sacks as much as it is the QBs with great footwork, and just enough elusiveness to avoid the rush and move in the pocket. (see Manning and Big Ben)
*I firmly believe that the OL will be SUBSTANTIALLY better this year with Albert improving, Waters back, Rudy improving OR being replaced by “G”, Goff bringing experience and gritt and Sackintosh out of the starting lineup. Whoever wins the battle at RT should be better than he was last year.

Sackintosh Must Go
I am so tired of having him start as our RT!

I didn't vote
I don’t agree to any of the 3 options given. I don’t think our O-line will be much improved but I think we will do better than last year.
There's always next week,,, and when we run out of weeks, there's always next year!

You can't do that

Eric Ghaiciuc
looks like he may be a downgrade…

Hmm...
Looks like Pace has something left in the tank and maybe we shouldve taken a look? I think everyone would agree that Sackintosh has to go and Pioli better be looking for something. At this point I wouldnt mind seeing Runyan or Tauscher signed even to short contracts. I know Runyan is old, but I think hes functional for 1 season and teams are waiting to see how Tauscher recovers from injury to do anything but either or would be an upgrade on what we have even in the short term.

Where did you get these “stats” from????

Lies, damned lies and statistics
Any statistical analysis that states as it’s premise
I found some stats floating around the internets that assigned sacks to offensive lineman. I couldn’t find it’s source, and I don’t know how a player gets assigned fractional sacks (especially quarter sacks), but the numbers seemed reasonable enough overall.
has probably got some major issues. Sure enough, after a cursory inspection, these numbers don’t seem to have any validity.
The biggest problem for me is that the NFL reports that the 2008 Chiefs gave up 37 sacks. But this analysis only accounts for 17 of them. Somebody was responsible for the other 20 sacks that the Chiefs gave up. I’m sure a few of those could be attributed to LJ whom I have yet to see actually block anybody who wasn’t a teammate, but 20 is too many sacks to reasonably be attributed to anybody who wasn’t a lineman. So the whole premise that “the stats floating around the internets” are reasonable is crap.
Another issue is the presumption that if a player started a game at a position, he was the only player to play at that spot the whole game. Brandon Albert played Left Tackle a lot, but not every play each of the games he started there.
Further, these statistics don’t count all the bodies on the line each season. 5 lineman * 16 games = 80 lineman-games. The stats here show the Chiefs having only 72 lineman-games. I’m not 100% sure my memory is correct, but I seem to remember that every play I watched throughout the season used at least 5 lineman. Maybe Herm had them go without a Right Guard for a few games, but I sort of doubt it. At least that notion would explain some of the 20 missing sacks, wouldn’t it?
These numbers might be fun to look at and dream about, but they really are just a bunch of gobbledygook as far as I am concerned. Spending a lot of time looking at them might actually make a person dumber.

found the source!
Lenny and I were having a discussion about the validity of the stats over on BFTB, so I decided to try to find the source one more time. And I finally found it.
There is no big chart, but you can look up each individual player if you want.

Still not sure exactly how they count them, but STATS, Inc. is a pretty reputable source. One of the leaders in providing in depth stats not covered by the typical sources.
that was a lot harder than it needed to be…
