Oklahoma Drill: Right Defensive End

                                                                                              Who Wants it?

Star-divide

There seem to be a few open positions on the roster this offseason. One of the best competitions looks to be at the right defensive end spot. There are many things a coaching staff can look at to decide the starters on a team, but in my opinion the Oklahoma Drill is one of the best! I am unsure if this last vestige of toughness will be utilized in Kansas City this offseason, but it sure does fit the m.o. of the new look Chiefs.

Coach Haley is trying to build a tougher, more physical ball club. One that will not shy away from contact or finesse the opposition. He has also mentioned that each and every position is wide open for competition, so that should lend itself to some heated camp battles! When I played, we called this drill the Meatgrinder! It was by far one of the meanest, most physical, and demanding drills I ever took part in. And I loved every minute of it! This is how we decided if you were starter material, or you were just going to sit and watch the cheerleaders on the sidelines.

One guy who would have excelled at this drill (J.A.) is no longer in K.C., and his pass rush went with him. For a team that set a record for futility last year in sacks, Pioli and company have put a premium on upgrading the Defensive End position. It was obvious when we drafted Tyson Jackson #3 overall that we intend to do just that. From what I have read, Tyson will lock down the LDE position, while our 3rd round pick, Magee will get a look at the RDE. But there are a few other players who may have something to say about that. Guys who have spent time as 4-3 Ends or Defensive Tackles are going to be pushing for a starter's spot somewhere on this line. I will not get into which scheme we will be utilizing (4-3 Under/Over/Through the Woods/Whatever), but I am curious as to who will be our starting Right Defensive End come September. It is in these positional battles that we will build the '09 Chiefs!

Let's take a look at the players.

Alex Magee was drafted #67 overall in this year's draft and is the youngest player (22) on the roster. Magee's strengths seem to be that he is big enough and athletic enough to play a true 3-4 end at 6'4" and 295 lbs., and big enough and versatile enough to play inside at the nose tackle position. If Magee does not win the RDE position outright, he will undoubtedly provide much needed depth along our D line.

Turk McBride is currently a huge question mark as to where he will end up in our new defense. He worked out with the linebackers at mini-camp, but my guess is they will try him again at the RDE position. At 6'4" 285 lbs. Turk seems to have the size to play end in the 3-4 or 4-3.  I like Turk, and think he will find a spot somewhere. But I don't think the new coaching staff has any warm, fuzzy feelings for these guys that we have come to know, so I am not expecting too much.

Bryan Johnston is an interesting possibility. At 6'5" 276 lbs., this guy ran a 4.66 forty at the Combine last year. That is fast for a big man. His height and long arms are also a big advantage when playing the DE position, and if he improved his strength and conditioning this offseason, I think he could be one of the "surprises" this year. I know it's early, but Johnston could shine in our new D.

Bobby Greenwood (6'6" 278 lbs.) and Dion Gales (6'-5" 259 lbs.) are both college defensive ends that look to be training camp fodder. But both seen to be versatile lineman who may make the roster on special teams. Gales could also get a look at OLB (I have also seen him listed at 6'7" 288 lbs, so not sure which is accurate?). We will throw these guys in the Meatgrinder and see what happens!

There could be some others who will end up lining up at the RDE, but I am unsure who they might be. We may see some Defensive Tackles such as Dorsey and Boone getting a look over here if we end up utilizing the 3-4, so there are a lot of possibilities. No doubt this is an important position in our defense, and we need someone who is mean enough and tough enough to handle it. My guess is that Magee will be the guy, with others like Turk and Johnston coming in during obvious passing downs. Training Camp is right around the corner. Let the Meatgrinder begin!

IMO that Turk will start and Magee will push him this year to be starter

Magee will back up at both ends and possibly at DT under spot for Dorsey

For some reason I am pulling for Turk

maybe it is the Hard Knocks “Tank and Turk” duo that I like so much, but I hope you are right. Something tells me that the new coaching staff specifically targeted Magee in the draft because they think he can start right away. Turk’s experience may give him an edge though?

Just a Heads up

Johnston didn’t go to the NFL Scouting Combine, those numbers are from a pro day. Nevertheless, they are incredibly impressive for a man his size and i look for him to be a contributor this year.

Wonder if he will see some time @ predator/OLB/Rush-backer, that is what he played in college until he beefed up. He is a hard worker so hopefully he can overcome his injury/surgery from the season and really make an impact.

Thanks for the correction,

Johnston is one of those “tweener” guys who may get a look at different positions for sure. He has some really nice measurables, so I think it is just a matter of finding the right fit for him, and letting him get some playing time.

I was wanting to say that after the 1 reply

As a 3rd and long pass rusher of edge he would make a tremendous weapon.
But I looked at Turks Stats on NFL.com and he didn’t seem to make much impact in either year.
1 start in 2007 and 9 starts in 2008.
Plus he would have no advantage in new scheme as he hasn’t played it either.
Maybe Magee will get start and McBride will back up. Dunno

Starts might not tell it.

41 tackles is respectable. Wish I could get some game film and go back over some things. Seemed to me like McBride was in the thick of things a disproportionate amount of time. We might discover that he’s a better 3-4 lineman than 4-3 lineman. Seems a bit short to be at the end, though. All I can remember is him catching my eye quite a few times, but whether that was my homer-ism at work, desperately looking for bright spots while I graded papers, or that the guy has something, I don’t know.

Greenwood

I think Bobby will make the team and play. He is almost identical to the two DE’s that play the 3-4 in pittsburgh. Height, weight, speed are all similar to Keisel and Krucheck (Spelling???). He may have been a steal.

I wasn't sure what to think about Greenwood, so I appreciate the feedback

He does have good size, as do a lot of the players they have looked at. I think they must have felt we were a little smallish on the defensive side, and that doesn’t fit the kind of team they want to build. If a lot of these guys pan out, we are going to be a much bigger, more intimidating group.

Experience means a lot

I’d like to see Turk and Johnston use the experience they gained last year and tear it up this year. Our rooks look good, but they are still rookies and have a lot of learning to do before they will be productive.

I just hope that they all work out and are dominant together.

Great point

I think I forget sometimes to NOT expect too much from the rookies. They may or may not come out of the gate strong, but most times they do not. I would have to say that Tyson Jackson probably doesn’t have a choice, I think it is his job to lose. But the RDE positional battle should be interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Magee, McBride, Johnston, or possible even Dorsey win that position. I love the camp battles!

Johnston would make a great OLB

and McBride I wouldn’t be shocked if they’re working out at ILB

I cannot wait to see an actual depth chart

so I can see where some of these guys are lining up. I wouldn’t be shocked to see some people shift positions. They really like BIG linebackers like Vrabel. If you are right, and those two play LB. then the depth at RDE would be slim. Magee, Greenwood, Gilberry, Dorsey?, player to be determined?

by TheQ on May 10, 2009 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dorsey will start at RDE

Magee will rotate in maybe for both DE’s? As compared to last season, I think we’re MUCH deeper at RDE

I think that it come down to whether or not we run the 3-4 or 4-3 Under

on whether Dorsey starts at RDE. If we run the 4-3, Dorsey almost has to play on the inside. But I bet they are struggling with deciding on running a true 3-4 and having Dorsey sit, or utilizing the #5 overall pick from last year’s draft in either defense. But IMO, Dorsey will not be effective having to play against longer armed Left Tackles, so this is a tough decision I would think. I think they will eventually decide to run the 4-3 just because they have more pieces to the puzzle.

Let's rember this
One guy who would have excelled at this drill (J.A.) is no longer in K.C., and his pass rush went with him.

In the new defense, Jared Allen would likely have either needed to shed a little weight, and play predator, or gain 20 pounds to play RDE – and I think his pass rush would have vanished if he were playing at 295 lbs.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I meant that JA would have loved the Oklahoma Drill

because of his attitude and toughness. But, I agree, I don’t see him as a run stuffing 3-4 end. He is much better as a 4-3 Pass Rusher.
