Four Round Mock Draft Has Chiefs Picking OLB, G, ILB

Mel Kiper has his latest mock draft up which includes four rounds.  There are so many factors that make a four round mock draft pointless except for the purpose of educating ourselves on the players the Chiefs could or should be keying in on according to the pundits.

Without further ado, here's who Kiper says the Kansas City Chiefs will be selecting in the first four rounds of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Round 1 (3) OLB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

Round 3 (67) OL Andy Levitre, Oregon State

6'3", 305 pound left tackle in college, Levitre's projected to play on the interior of the offensive line mainly because of his short arms.  He's got plenty of experience and versatility having started his final 35 games at every position except center.

Why he'll be a Chief....Versatility (but not in the Kris Wilson sense).  He can fill a need at either guard position and can provide depth at either tackle position if needed.

Round 4 (102) ILB Daniel Ellerbe, Georgia

The Chiefs got a look see at the 6'1", 235 pound linebacker when they attended the Georgia Pro Day last month.  He played inside at Georgia and projects to play inside in the NFL.

Why he'll be a Chief...Hampered by injuries in 2008 caused his stock to fall so the Chiefs could be banking on an injury-free pro career and select him in the fourth round as a nice value pick.  Plus the LB position is a major area of need for the Chiefs.

***

The possibility of the Chiefs picking Levitre and Ellerbe remains very low based solely on the sheer number of external factors that go into play with the actual NFL draft.  Nevertheless, Kiper's latest four round mock draft helps educate us on the some of the players outside of the first round.

Would you be satisfied with these players after the first four rounds?

Ellerbe and Levitre

I’m not sure I would agree with either of these picks.

Ellerbe had major injury trouble, and some law trouble. And, after drafting Curry, would you want to turn right around draft another ILB?

Levitre is OK… but wouldn’t they rather have Loadholt, if they are drafting a RT?
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sidbury or Kruger go in that spot instead of an OL at all.

I’m praying for Kruger (DE) in the 3rd and Coffee (RB) OR a C (Luigs or Shipley, maybe?) in the 4th.

If Loadholt is still around

But Levitre supposedly projects as a guard.

I’m still very interested to see what happens to the right side of the line by the time training camp comes.

Kiper says

Loadholt goes to the Raiders at #40…
but, I’ve seen others where he falls into the 3rd.

Jamon Meredith is another RT prospect that should be available, per Kiper… he’s go to SD at #78.

ILB in the 4th?

The only way i see Curry as a Chief is at ILB in 3-4 i dont believe he would be as good of an OLB in 3-4 just in 4-3. I think if we want a ILB in 4th we need to go after a pass rushing LB/DE Like Orakpo in the 1st, but if you are sold on Curry then take him and go RB like Ogbonnaya in 4th or TE like Coffmen.

by mgarc3000 on Apr 9, 2009 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

I love Coffman

But, I really really don’t want the Chiefs to draft a TE.

by stagdsp on Apr 9, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i think coffmen

would learn under TG then take over when he retires. Lets face it hes probably only got 1-2 more seasons left.

good idea

But, we drafted Cottam with that logic last year.
I just think there are bigger needs this year.

We just signed Beisel again

Im too lazy to make a fanpost. Does that change going for Curry?

by KCJayhawk on Apr 9, 2009 3:46 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think so...

Beisel is good depth and special teams, I bet he doesn’t start.

by stagdsp on Apr 9, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

And with the Lions reportedly

set to sign Stafford, that leaves the draft wide open. I think we’re trading out of it.

by KCJayhawk on Apr 9, 2009 3:51 PM CDT reply actions

I hope we do!

I like curry a lot.
but, trading down is my #1 choice!

by stagdsp on Apr 9, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

But if Curry really is the second coming..

then it’d be awful watching what we passed up.

by KCJayhawk on Apr 9, 2009 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

It always is

More picks
I have a problem with drafting a Guard/RT when we need a Center.
Niswanger can play Guard and is probably better with Experience than Levitre.
I like Ellerbe but don’t know about injury issue. GA LB’s have produced pretty good in NFL.

by Steve_Chiefs on Apr 9, 2009 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I could live with it

Sounds to me like they would be adressing needs. Not sure about their talent, but, I’m not getting paid to come up with these list’s.

by 63gump on Apr 9, 2009 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

needs?

I’m not convinced that G is a top need for the Chiefs.
I’d rather see a DE, RB, RT or WR in that spot.

You can draft a G for depth or development later in the draft.
But, they need a starter in the 3rd round… why draft a G, when Waters and Goff are the likely starters?

by stagdsp on Apr 9, 2009 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

pretty good picks

Your right it might be a reach to put a guy like this Levitre in the third round, but its the Draft. A guy with a secound round grade is gonna fall to us.

1st and 3rd

Months ago I liked the idea of trading down for, say, Maluluga and Cushing in the 1st and Alex Mack in the 2nd. But things have changed so much since then. No more 2nd rounder. Switch to the 3-4.

What I like now is “stopping the madness” and remaining conservative with a (Curry) pick in the 1st.

Next, I like the idea of taking (Luigs) in the 3rd. Why? you may ask. There is no such thing as a luxury pick for the chiefs in the 09 draft. We have to fill C, rG, rT on offense and ILB, OLB on defense. Not to mention lDE, rDe, NG for the 3-4 switch. 8-9 positions that NEED to be filled. We have 2 picks to fill those positions with semi-guaranteed 1st day starter talent. Not to say that cant be found in the 4-7 rounds, but ill leave that to Pioli Genius.

Considering our NEEDS the C position is one of the few positions that can be a homerun with a 3rd round pick. Its as safe a pick, as I can come up with, at the top of the 3rd. I would prefer Alex Mack but we aren’t in a position to take him anymore.

by MasterBlaster7 on Apr 9, 2009 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

I like Luigs or Caldwell with the 3rd rd pick

I would prefer if Eric Wood would be there in the third but I have a feeling he will be gone late in the second round. But I agree that a center is probably the best pick in the third round as it is a huge need. Plus…Levitre is versatile at all OL positions except OC, whereas Luigs, Caldwell, or Wood can play center or guard.

by JZChiefsfan on Apr 9, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

I think if we take curry in 1st round we will go
Rd3-OLB-marcus freeman fast OLB
Rd-4 C-woods or luigs good starters with size
RD-5-DT- samie lee hill ideal sized NT for 3-4
Rd-6- DE-zach potter big DE at 6’7 ideal for 3-4
that could possibly be 5 starters that would fill our holes

by cassel4prez on Apr 9, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

Your picks need moved up a round I think

Freeman I don’t know
Woods late second early third
Hill will go before 5th with a dearth of NT material in draft
I like Potter but Prototypical 3-4 DE’s are also lacking in draft

Curry in 1st, Woods in 3rd, Hill/Potter in 4th

by Steve_Chiefs on Apr 9, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

yeh my bad about woods
Freeman is #5 OLB behind sintim out of ohio state
so
Rd1-curry
rd3 OLB-Marcus freeman
Rd4-NT-Samie lee hill
Rd5-C-Aq shipley
rd6-DE- zach potter or pannel egboh

Off Topic

This is kinda off topic…but…I think Tank Tyler might be a great NT. He is the right height and can get to the right size pretty quick if he goes on a Jamarcus Russell diet. He also had a monster bench…40 reps of 225. I think he might be a diamond in the Pioli rough that no one seems to be talking about. I think all this talk of taking an NT in the 4-6 brought these thoughts to the fore.
