"He's not such an athlete that he could transition to being a 3-4 linebacker," says draft expert Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com. "But he is a good enough athlete. He's hard-working, very intense, very passionate. He's a guy that every coach wants, but not every scout wants because he's a little bit undersized."
USATODAY.com - Hali's inner drive fueled by more than football
This report is from 2006 and i think it is right, I can't see Hali as a 3/4 linebacker. I think he is on the trading block.

I sometimes forget how young Hali still is...
He was drafted only three years ago… he has always been effective on the left side of the line and is great at stripping the ball. I hope we keep the 4-3 cuz he has too much talent to just sit on the bench.

I wonder what we could get if we traded him to a team with a star DE on the other side like Jared

Hunt has already stated
that Hali and Dorsey have roles on the team. We’re not going to ditch our first round pick from just 3 years ago because he doesn’t have prototypical 3-4 Rushback size or athleticism. Part of the reason we’re making a gradual shift from 4-3 to 3-4 is that projects like the one GB and Denver are taking on (complete switch from 4-3 to 3-4) almost force you to cut much of your defense because they just don’t fit the new scheme.
By switching to a hybrid 3-4/4-3 scheme like the one Pendergast used last year in Arizona we are able to give guys like Tamba a chance to learn the new system and prove they can play in a 3-4 before we make a long-term contract decision.
As for trade value, there’s not much for a guy like Hali right now because of his age and the lack of production due to a whole host of variables. After at least a decent year, if he still doesn’t fit the 3-4 like we want him to, we can move him without incident.

I think the switch talk is a smoke screen
I don’t think Hunt would sign off on wasting the draft picks from the last 3 years that we have on defense. I think the Chiefs have leaked just enough information to make it seem like they will switch just so teams will think they are in pursuit of 3-4 personel. This might cause people to trade up to the Chiefs spot so as to get a 3-4 player that they think KC might grab.
I still do not buy that we are going to a 3-4 or even a 4-3 under. I think it would waste too much young talent that we have on the team. Haley has said that you fit the system to the players not the players to the system, so once Pioli and Haley really look this team over I think they will stick to the 4-3 and find the players that will improve the team in that way.

The 4-3 under
doesn’t waste much, if any, of the talent we’ve got on this team right now and gives our defense a better chance to excel with the tools we’ve got than a straight 4-3 or 3-4 scheme. One thing is a pretty safe bet: whatever scheme our defense adopts for the majority of reps this season, it’s not going to be the Tampa 2 we ran with Herm. Changes will undoubtedly leave some players out of the mix but recent 1st rounders won’t be among them, we’ll find SOME way to get them involved and if they can’t produce in the new system they’ll be put on the block.

If Hali Keeps Declining Like He Has The Last Three Years
It won’t matter where he was drafted…he’s going to be gone.
As far as the switch goes, Glenn Dorsey is the only one on this team that I think is a valid reason for keeping the 4-3 (since he was just drafted last year. There’s nobody else up front who’s valuable enough for the Chiefs to worry about their development by switching schemes considering how they performed in the 4-3. And when it comes down to it, I don’t think the Chiefs will keep the 4-3 defense just because of one player who garnered them all of 1 sack and 40-some tackles last year, no matter how much he makes. I believe the switch is real and that Dorsey will probably play one season here either at NT or DE and if he doesn’t shine the Chiefs will trade him away.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

You Should Add To Your Predictions for 2009
4. Tamba Hali’s ass is gone.
I agree the above and I think he’s gone. Last year was the year of Hali. It was year Hali proves he is a first round pass rushing DE and we set the NFL record for sack futility. Chalk that up to failure.

Following the 2009
Assuming he gets up his trend of regression, which after two sacks last season would put him at completely non-existent. Now that we’re on the topic, I’ll have a post together looking at Tamba’s inability to stop the run (supposedly a strength over rushing the passer).

No news here
I’ve been saying all this offseason Hali can’t play in a 3-4. He’s a poor tackler and not fast enough coming off the edge. McBride is another who doesn’t fit into the scheme. With the personnel we have we’re just better of playing to their strengths and thats the 4-3

Defense
Hali is not only not a rush backer he is not a RDE. He played well enough his first two years at LDE. I still believe a Legit RDE and MLB makes this defense much better without wasting Dorsey and even Hali.
