Around SBN: Hugh Douglas Admits To Stealing From Jaguars

The Kansas City Chiefs announced they have signed unrestricted free-agent C Eric Ghiaciuc (Bengals). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

KFFL - Kansas City Chiefs News and Notes

Another signing.

Thanks for your patience this afternoon. Primetime and I had one of those rare afternoons (and now evenings) where we are both away from the computer. Many thanks for your FanPost and FanShot contributions.

Update: I was thrown off by the fact that The PARADE knew how to use the FanShot function. His original FanShot on this story is here.

Sorry, meant to include

That there isn’t a 27 year old, healthy, OL 16 game starter from ‘08 in the NFL that couldn’t make our team. Our offensive line was terrible last year. Terrible. One of the worst in the NFL. For some reason, many around here have tried to convince themselves that it wasn’t a weakness.

If someone wants to debate this, I’ll go get stats, right now I’m just hoping people stop and remember our QB’s (yes some more fragile than others) crumpled up on the ground…or our lackluster conventional running game.

by kcsno56 on Apr 30, 2009 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Center?

If he stays on and since Niswanger just re-signed, what, a week ago, I wonder how this bodes for the line?

I wonder how versatile this guy is

If he maybe he can play backup guard or something as well.

This won’t be the last of the off season o-line additions either.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 30, 2009 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point Chris, I hadn't thought of that

Maybe we’ll keep both and just make some moves on the line depending on their strength(s) in camp.

IIRC, he's playged guard before for the Bengals.

I would assume he’d be a candidate to be our interior offensive lineman backup.

by rockchalk on Apr 30, 2009 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what Kiper had to say when he was drafted:
“The kid I like on that panel, Eric Ghiaciuc, the center out of Central Michigan,” Kiper said. “Ghiaciuc is athletic, he’s got that wrestling background. He can play center or guard. That’s a real good pick for Marvin Lewis and the Cincinnati Bengals.”

via scout.com

Looks like he could play either C or G, so I’m also curious how this will shape things. Maybe Rudy will move to 2nd string? From what I’ve heard this guy’s nothing too special though.

The weak link on the offensive line for the Bengals is center Eric Ghiaciuc. Ghiaciuc was the team’s fourth round pick in 2005 and became the starter in 2006. He struggled with injuries last season and should improve this season but his lack of strength is a huge liability in the running game. Ghiaciuc is not particularly small for a center but needs to improve his technique and find a way to use his agility to his advantage against much bigger but slower defensive tackles. He is still pretty good in pass protection but remains a below average center in this league. There is little depth at the center position so the team is relying on Ghiaciuc to step up his game this season
ultimateffstrategy.com

Hopefully we can coach him up.

by LTownChiefsFan on Apr 30, 2009 7:36 PM CDT reply actions

So he works well against slow tackles?

NT’s aren’t exactly burners. I’m still betting on Niswanger for the starting position unless we sign a player soon to be released

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

by 808NaNz808 on Apr 30, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it's the opposite.

He’s not very strong, so big strong DTs give him trouble. He needs to find a way to use his agility to gain an advantage over them.

It doesn’t sound too great, although he is supposedly a much better pass protector than run blocker, and I expect us to be passing a lot more than we run. Maybe he is a good fit for our system.

Awesome

Afte rplaying Madden many many times haha I remember picking this guy up in free Agency. I know it sounds funny but he’s a great young center. He complements the line perfectly

by Chiefs190 on Apr 30, 2009 7:57 PM CDT reply actions

I think this probably fits the "right 53"...............

You’ve really got to have two guys that can play each position well and not have a
huge dropoff in performance. Depth.

by jcox31mc on Apr 30, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

I think its training camp competition fodder

Niswanger didn’t exactly set the world on fire last year. There’s no reason NOT to bring in other Centers and have a competition to see who will be the best guy.

by ChiefDJ on May 1, 2009 6:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Rudy is moving to center

All last year Tim Grunhard called for Rudy to move over to guard because he is too big to play center and this move pretty much locks that up..

Waters will be traded and rudy will move over..

I've always been a fan of Ghiacuic.

I liked him coming out of Central Michigan, and think he can be a super backup, or a passable starter at either C or G.

Most likely, we trade Brian Waters for like a 3rd round pick next year, and slide Rudy over to G. Now, I highly doubt that either Rudy or Ghiacuic are longterm answers, but they should provide some time and mostly decent play for Pioli to get “his guys” in here.

pioli will ban Whitlock from the building

before we trade waters away. Seeing how Whitlock took it upon himself to become waters mouthpiece and all.

No Way He Improves The O-Line

I live in Ohio, and had to endure week after week of lousy football from the Bungles whenever I was looking at network TV on Sunday afternoons. I think Ghiacuic was a primary reason they were terrible this year. Time after time on pass plays he would be pushed back into the quarterback’s face by the opposing D-line: he just cannot hold the line of scrimmage against a strong defender. The Bungles were also one of the worst rushing teams in the league, and again Ghiacuic frequently was pushed off the point of attack. I don’t have the statistics, but I expect that Cincy had just about the worst offense in the league for 3rd-and-short running plays. The Cincy offense has been deteriorating since 2006 and I attribute poor center play as a significant contributor. I expect if you could check out the pro personnel files from most every MFL front office, he had to rank as one of the worst starting centers in the league last year. If this guy has to play against a good defender, KC will have big problems on offense.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

This is depth and that's all

Please remember that Rudy hasn’t been able to stay healthy for a full 16 games season yet.

by TonyG88 on May 1, 2009 9:36 AM CDT reply actions

Our O-line is gonna suck this year.

Jones gave up one sack… Goff gave up 4.5
Niswanger gave up 3.5 sacks… Ghiaciuc gave up 4
Waters gave up one sack… he may be gone.
D-Mac gave up 7 sacks. Let’s hope SOMEONE on our OL is better than that.
