The Chiefs have hired Falcons scout Phil Emery to be their new director of college scouting, multiple sources tell PFW.
Emery should be familiar with the ways of Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, as he worked under Thomas Dimitroff — Pioli's understudy in New England — for the past 15 months. Emery brings a very thorough, militant scouting approach to his new club.

I wonder if Pioli had to get permission
to interview & hire this guy and this was a side note to the Gonzalez trade?
If it was a promotion
from scout to director of college scouting, I don’t think so.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.
Doesnʻt it appear to be
a perfect situation for Pioli and Co.? Every questions his drafting, he fires Hermʻs crew. Can people still question his drafting if he gets rid of the scouts?
Pretty sure if Tyson Jackson doesn't pan out Pioli doesn't get to blame the scouts.
The critics of this years drafts by in large have been low-level to no name hacks. What’s really pathetic is we’d bet that all the “big names” are only giving the Chiefs B’s & C’s 75-80% purely out of deference to Pioli. McShay, Mortensen, and Kiper all don’t want to be the guy who panned the Chiefs draft class for using #3 on a reach that shot up in the week before the draft if Jackson turns out to be one of these patriots-type sleeper genius picks.
All in all, we think the draft was pretty good, woulda liked some more o-line, but we really won’t care about “winning the draft” as long as we win more games.
The one thing that sucks though is that for all of Pioli’s hype, we expected a trade down. Sure we understand if no one’s offering it can’t happen. But he’s supposed to be a miracle worker, and we were a little, get with the miracle making. Just saying, MAAAAYBE we should temper our expectations slightly.

I was thinking
the same thing on the trade end of things, Pioli coming from that background and all.
I thought about this some and decided that New England, with a solid team under them has more of an opportunity to do these trade moves and can afford to move down and accept all these future picks because they are not in need of certain player at this time.
Now my thinking could be all wrong and BB could be the real trade master and not Pioli.
I think we will know the answer to this question in 2 – 3 years.
I disagree with The Parade
The GM can blame the scouts if they consistently have poor mid and late round draft picks because there is no way a GM or head coach can watch enough film of EVERYONE and the mid and late round picks are a crapshoot at best.
However, the 1st round pick especially (and probably 2nd round as well) is such a big pick that any GM has no doubt spent a ton of time watching film on the guys he’s targetting, especially when they begin narrowing it down to a couple players. They’ve no doubt watched every game multiple times AND met with the players.
You can’t blame 1st round picks on scouts. Those are all on the GM.
There's merit in you argument...
I think the 32 teams already have an idea on the college players available who belong in the 1st round. It all depends on who you like better when you make your selection.
That was evident with the DHB was selected by Oakland. The 32 knew he belonged in the 1st round, but only Oakland felt he deserved to be in the 7th slot.
IMO the Jets probably offered to move up into KC’s 3rd spot to select Sanchez, but Pioli declined knowing that Tyson would not be around with the 17th pick. The same with Seattle when they took Curry.
Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

If you had flipped the 3rd for 17th
could you not have flipped the 17th for the 11th?
But did we want any of the players that jets traded? or just draft pick compensation?

Those were Mangini guys
I think all those guys are backups, but they were Manginis guys from when he was with the Jets. Every coach wants to bring guys from his last team with him.
Basically the Jets worked out a deal with Mangini where they gave them low compensation in terms of draft picks, but gave him a lot of “his guys” that were still on their team.
There’s no way Pioli or pretty much any other GM or coach would have taken those specific guys as compensation. It was a deal that only worked because they were guys Mangini wanted on his team.
I guess that’s true, but there’s no way Jackson is worth the #3 overall. Tempering the expectations is exactly what people should do, because Pioli is indeed human. His flatulence stinks, he bleeds, and yes, he even drafted guys like Chad Jackson, Marquise Hill, and Brandon Merriweather. But he’s not Carl Peterson, which is already an enormous improvement, because it means I no longer have to boycott the merchandise of my favorite team.

Merriweather
has grown as a player since his rookie year. last season he had 83 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 interceptions. those are pretty decent numbers. i’d love to have those in KC.

and come to think about it...
chad jackson was injury plauged (pulled hamstring, torn acl) but the few games he did play for the Pats, he did perform…and to say hill was a bad draft choice, man, i don’t know…he was an obvious 2nd round project, they already were playing seymour, warren, and green and we’ll never know what hill could do because he died young…so the three guys you named, 1 is producing, 1 was injured, and 1 died.

Chad Jackson is a complete bust, Merriweather has been underperforming, and Hill was a bust. Pioli has a good record in the draft, but what I’m pointing out is that he’s human, so he still makes some mistakes—far fewer than Peterson, though.

Meriweather
was asked to do nothing but special teams his first year. last year, his second year, he was second on the depth chart behind Rodney Harrison. after Harrison went down, Meriweather started 11 games and put up those numbers…what should his numbers be?

I agree
I listen to ESPN radio a lot(I have an hour commute, have moved to the south and don’t particularly like Country) and nobody has mentioned a peep about KC’s draft. They are so afraid to call out Pioli. Last year I had to turn it off they were praising Herm’s/Carl to high heaven for the master draft they had, but this year nothing, nada. We went 2-14 last year with a highly touted draft, this year I think we’ll do a lot better with one that the analysts are afraid to talk about. The only thing that bothers me is that I think we know who was the one beind the trades in NE, Belechick; he is a trading machine. Our one trade in the 7th round didn’t impress me. I kept wanting that 2nd round pick next year to com into play, but with many of the analysts saying next year is going to be the better draft, maybe it’s best we hang on to it.
Im a D first guy and i still think we should have went o tackle
and the only reason i say that is because we didnt get any guys to help tyson on the 3 man front. Ya we have tank and dorsey but they are just bandaids for a real 3-4 line man.
FOUR F'S FIND UM FEEL UM FUGUM FORGET UM.
Character
This is what impresses me in what Pioli does. He does not care how fast the guy is. How strong he is. He cares how he is going to play for the team. Let’s be serious what is the difference between 4.5 and 4.6 or 4.7? DJ has good speed … He was used out of position and he has no “killer” mentality. We could have 11 DJs on defense and still suck. We need professionals that come to work and not just players with potential that do not care and take plays of. And Dorsey will be just fine. The kid played very well. He is to small to plug gaps. That is why he got pushed around. Let him get through and you’ll see a difference. Maybe he is not perfect for DE but he will do the job just fine.
OMG I didn't know this site existed!
I am going to rewatch the whole 2008 season, I get so few of the games and am not able to watch many of the ones I do get.
+1

Chuck Cook ....25 years in KC, but 12 years in Directors position
I think Cook was a bad fit and should have been replaced a long time ago.

Maybe we could save this scout a lot of time & work
by finding out what seniors at LSU are projected to go 1st round next year

Does everyone have to be on the same page as Pioli?
Does it make sense to have a whole front office of Pioli guys? I am talking in the context of scouting, not all for the same cause. I think having a couple guys that like different style players makes it better. If everyone agrees with Pioli then why even have anyone BUT Pioli? Someone needs to be there to play devils advocate…Lord knows some of you guys to do that very well…lol jk. I just think it makes for some good debates and that will help the Chiefs in the long run to make the right choice…for trades, draft picks, FA, etc.
Pain is Temporary ~ Pride is Forever!!
Maybe Pioli likes the debates with guys he knows and know him
I trade to make an AP correlation and couldn’t quite make the point.
To say that the scouts he hires are yes men would be a stretch.
To say he hires people that know what he wants and are looking for them is not a bad thing.
IMO that the debate is better with people that you know and trust rather than total strangers.
There was what I was trying to say “Know and Trust”
I’ve begun to understand who is what on this site and
I wouldn’t spend the night in the woods with any of you :)
