Chiefs fans are starting to feel good about football again. We have acquired some good FAs over the last couple of months. We have a new head coach who is turning heads. We have the #3 spot in the draft (which some will view as a negative but I view it as a positive, because there are a lot of quality players that we could draft). Arrowhead Stadium is undergoing a badass renovation. And the culture around Arrowhead is only improving. Who do we thank for this? Scott Pioli definitely deserves credit for helping to get things going in the right direction. But I'm going against the grain: I say Clark Hunt is the guy we should be thanking.
Why am I high on Clark? There are several reasons why.
*After the 2007 season, King Carl said that he and Herm would be still be around in 2008. Shortly after that, Hunt came along and said changes would be made if no progress was made in 2008. Did Clark keep his promise? You bet. CP "resigned" after a devastating home loss to the Chargers and Edwards would be fired shortly after.
*Hunt went all-out and got the hottest GM prospect in the NFL, Scott Pioli. Pioli was sought after by the Seahawks and Giants a few years back, and both of those gigs seem pretty badass. Whatever Hunt said to Pioli to get him to come to Kansas City should be etched in stone.
*Edwards wasn't fired after the regular season ended because Hunt wanted the new GM to decide his fate. Some people hated this move but I thought it was smart. He wanted to let the new GM to make that decision.
*Firing Edwards was a step in the right direction. Getting a young up-and-comer as the new head coach was a giant leap. You have to like the hiring of Todd Haley. He's not a retread hire. He's young and eager to prove himself. This may be a calculated risk but that's what makes it so interesting.
*Hunt said that he liked the Steelers model of building a team and wanted to model the Chiefs after them. I'm not a huge Steelers fan but they are an excellent franchise: they are consistently good and they know how to maintain success. They are annual playoff contenders. Oh, and winning six Super Bowls also helps your image. So it's easy to see why Clark is fascinated by the Steelers.
*Hunt says he'll be involved with the football operations, but he will leave most of the major decisions to Pioli. Jerry Jones and Al Davis are very hands-on and their approaches haven't done jack squat. Hunt will avoid going that route, which I'm very thankful for.
To conclude this post I say this: Clark Hunt is a budding superstar and I see him being one of the league's elite owners later down the road.
