The purge of the Chiefs personnel department continued as V.P. of Player Personnel Bill Kuharich was released Wednesday morning.
Kuharich joined the organization in 2000 as director of pro personnel. He was named to his current position in 2006 and worked closely with then head coach Herm Edwards in the drafts of 2006 through 2008. He has 26 years of experience in pro football personnel.

I’ll say this is a surprise. Kuharich has a lot of experience in regards to negotiations. This is truly a clean slate for the org.

Major surprise
Kuharich is well respected, around the league, and thought to be a good personnel guy to have on you staff. Next years draft should be very interesting.

Déjà Vu
I say we can everyone, players included. Bring in all new guys whose names we don’t know. Build through the draft, always being clear to note how awesome our new staff is at evaluating talent. Call it a rebuilding year. Suck eggs for two seasons, then fire everybody and start again.
That’ll be loads of fun!

I doubt he was firing him just to fire him.
He probably sized him up, realized he wasn’t on the same page and let him go.
That’s the way these things happen.

Isn't that what they're doing?
Almost completely new front office (football side anyway), new coaches, players, letting quite a few old-regime players go. That’s what a lot of people were calling for last season. Until the Chiefs go 2-14 next season, I’m giving these guys the benefit of the doubt.
My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

Gimme a break
This is the first shake up this organization has truly had for 20 years. How much of the scouting dept. were Carl’s guys? Why are all of these moves so unexpected and why is everyone so shocked and outraged at how the new staff is doing business. The large majority of Chiefs fans had been calling for Carl’s head for 15 years, we got it and without even seeing the first team Pioli and Haley can field, people are doom and glooming the current leadership. IT"S APRIL PEOPLE, 3DAYS AFTER THEIR FIRST DRAFT!! Give them at least one season before you break out the pitchforks and storm the Arrowhead offices.

I don't think any Chiefs fan think those were bad moves
I think that some consider it more of a surprise in regards to Bill. How many thought Krumrie should have been let go, yet he’s still around? That retention really surprised me.

This is surprising
but I trust Pioli has someone good in mind to take his spot.

I'm just waiting for Scott to announce UCrawford as the new
Director of Internet Team Evaluators. :)

Probably Not :)
Doesn’t really surprise me that this came after the draft. You’ve got to figure that the Chiefs a) didn’t want to give anyone info into their thought processes on drafting until it was done, b) didn’t want to throw away all the research the existing team had already done, and c) wanted to have a shot at taking other teams’ personnel people (since I believe other teams could block those hires until after the draft).
As for Kuharich…nothing personal against the guy and I wish him well, but it doesn’t bother me that he got the axe. His draft record was terrible. He averaged about 1-2 starters per draft and the free agents the Chiefs brought in were routinely terrible (with the odd exception like Priest Holmes). Maybe that’s Peterson’s fault, but whatever the case the team’s personnel record during Kuharich’s tenure doesn’t give me any confidence that he was helping matters.
Onwards and upwards.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

Isn't Kuharich
The former GM of New Orleans that allowed Mike Ditka to trade the entire draft away so they could draft Ricky Williams? If thats the same one than I say good riddance, he was a horrible GM for the Saints.

on second thought...
I don’t believe he was GM of New Orleans, but yes, I am of the understanding that he was responsible for the Ricky Williams deal as a Pro Personnel guy…but I don’t think he was GM.

....aaaand I just checked, and you were right.
He was President/General Manager/Chief Operating Officer. He was the Carl Peterson of the Saints.

He would of been the only person in personnel or scouting...
that I would of kept. I thought our draft improved drastically when Carl’s role seemed diminished and Bill (along with Herm) started making the calls. I understand Pioli wants people who are on the same page I just would of thought Kuharich would of been able to pick up on what Pioli was looking for and find those kind of guys. It’s not like Pioli can bring over the entire NE scouting and personnel department, he’s going to need some new blood to fill out a staff. I’m wondering if this was agreed upon from the day Pioli was hired, maybe Bill wants to be able to go somewhere where he has more control over the direction of the organization.
Ten sacks in a season! For crying out loud that's what I used to average per game using DT in Tecmo Bowl!

A surprise to me
I thought that Kuharich was one of the good ones. It seemed that any time his name was mentioned in the KC media, it was to compliment him. I couldn’t really tell you anything about him but from what I had gathered, I figured he was safe from Pioli’s Merry Maids this time around.

Well
It seemed that any time his name was mentioned in the KC media, it was to compliment him.
Only when Carl Peterson or Bob Gretz were the ones doing the mentioning.

4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.

Several national writers
I have actually seen a lot of national writers say positive things about him. It is ok but just a suprise that they let him go.

Yeah he has a good reputation
And the Lions wanted to interview him in January (we didn’t let him) so it’s not like everyone thought he was terrible.

Yeah I was a little surprised about his firing too
I thought he was a fairly solid talent evaluator. I wish him the best of luck.
