Brad Cottam, our new starter.

via static.nfl.com

I just wanted to make a quick FanPost about my excitement for Brad Cottam taking over as our new tight end. He has been mentored by the greatest TE in NFL history for a full year now, and was already quite skilled coming into the league. Here is what Sports Illustrated had to say about his strengths last year:

POSITIVES: Large and athletic tight end with an unpolished game. Fluid releasing into routes, adjusts to the errant throw and makes the reception in stride. Moves well about the field, runs above average routes and uses his frame protect the pass. Catches the ball well and a solid intermediate range target. Strong at the point and handles opposing defensive lineman as an in-line blocker.

ANALYSIS: Cottam offers rare measurables and a tremendous amount of upside potential. An intelligent prospect, he has been commended by the coaches at Tennessee for his work ethic. Cottam offers potential as a number one tight end at the next level if he remains healthy and takes his game to another level.

He's 6'8" and weights 270 pounds... a real beast.

One of his biggest knocks coming into the NFL was that he had an extensive injury history in college. He tore ligaments in his thumb in 2004, had shoulder reconstruction surgery and was in a car accident in 2005, and tore an abdomen muscle and dislocated his left wrist in 2007. He ended up only playing 5 games as a senior. But his obvious skills landed him a 3rd round projection anyway.

Lets also not forget Primetime's post a few weeks ago about the success many NFL players have had coming out of the University of Tennessee.

Here's a YouTube highlight video for Cottam his senior year. Obviously it's short, but you can definitely see the potential.

I'm not sure why

But the way he runs reminds me a lot of old videos of football players in the 50s and 60s.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 28, 2009 9:42 PM CDT reply actions

He does!

He looks like a football player in the mold of those tough, in your face type of guys from glory days long gone. He has a tremendous amount of potential as a pass catcher, great route runner, and can grind out yards after the catch. On top of that, he is a much bigger target than TG and can block very well. All this from a guy who probably played half as many games in college than most of the most sought after tight ends due to injury. I think he will be an excellent target for Cassel and an upgrade to the position as a blocker, and he’s just getting started. Wait till he hits his stride!

Haha

He really does look like something from the “The Greatest Game Ever Played”…

All he needs now is some funny 50’s nickname… Brad “Crazy Legs” Cottam

Seriously though, he was freaking moving on those highlights, for being 280 he is amazingly fast.

ps: We should probably convert him to DE, you can never have enough DL ;)…..hahaha

It's because

he is freakishly taller than pretty much everyone around him.

I bet he won’t look as strange in the NFL since the players are generally bigger.

he had limited

playing time last year but when he was in i thought he played very well….he has not done anything to this point that would say he isnt worthy of the starting spot

My translation

Hey, how fast is he!? I love the type of runner he is. He runs like me—with all power and no time for moves. I love that. He can do good things. I think we did something good by trading Tony G, because now Matt Cassel can use his up-and-coming players.

by Vince D on Apr 28, 2009 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I was just going to do that Vince

He’s 16 and plays football for Central High School Blue Eagles. He’ll have to tell you what position he plays. Maybe a future KC Chief if he’s lucky and follows the Pioli way.

I think Cottam will be a monster

And can’t wait to see him busting through the secondary. man for a 6’8" 280 lb beast that man can move. It fully seemed like he was moving like someone outta them good ol days. Man can move. Tell you what, if I was a defender and saw him coming my way I get the hell outta his way, then again, I’m 5’6" and 100 pounds lighter than he is! :)

Thigpen

Does anyone think that we would be better off had we stuck with Thigpen considering who was available with our traded second pick? Maualuga, Brown, Britton, Laurinaitis, Barwin, or even Brace to anchor the 3-4. I realize that this is a Cottam post, so I’ll add this: unlike Cottam and Da Chiefs Guy, I a have a rather slow running style, which affords me the time for a lot of moves.
This is my first post. Do you realize how hard it is to be a life-long Chiefs fan who lives 20 minutes from Heinz field (Steelers). I need 2009 to be the year that I can talk smack to Steelers fans. Go Chiefs!

Welcome RD

No one has forgotten Joe Delaney among Chiefs fans.

by oldchiefsfan on Apr 29, 2009 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I've thought the same about Thigpen

since there were a lot of great defenders that slipped to the 2nd round. One of those guys could have ended up being a cornerstone for our defense for the next ten years. But Thigpen doesn’t really fit the Pioli mold. He wants big guys. He wants our team to look huge and scary. Thigpen is significantly smaller than Cassel… not very threatening. I guess only time will tell if we made the right choice by acquiring Cassel.

by Vince D on Apr 29, 2009 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Hum...let me think about this for a min...
  1. Maualuga, Brown, Britton, Laurinaitis, Barwin and even Brace if chosen instead, would have netted us ONE pick that will take 2-3 years to develop.

- OR -

2 day one starters, one a young (could be “Franchise”) QB that has 15 very good games under his belt. The other, a Pro-Bowl LB that has been a staple for 3 SB Chanpionships using the scheam our team will be makeing the transition to.

by KCChiefs on Apr 29, 2009 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

That's not how I see it

1. An immediate impact defensive player which could be a cornerstone of our defense for the next ten years, along with an average QB.

OR

2. An old LB on the tail end of his career with MAYBE 2 years left, along with a maybe slightly above average QB.

I’d rather have the 10-year defender. If Thiggy doesn’t work out we can draft a QB later. I’m freaking sick and tired of the Chiefs getting by on other people’s QBs. I want my own QB, dangit!

by Vince D on Apr 29, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

oops that should have been – OR – not OR

by Vince D on Apr 29, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Thiggy is someone elses QB....

If you want a KC origional KC I suggest you take Brodie Croyle.
Really, I’m serious… take him… somewhere….anywhere….just get him out of a Chiefs uniform.

Not really

I mean yeah, Thiggy was drafted by Minnesota, but they cut him before the season started. So essentially, his entire career has been with the Chiefs.

by Vince D on Apr 29, 2009 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

they didn't cut him

They put him on the practive squad, where he became fair game for teams to add to their roster.

no

you can’t just put someone on your practice squad. they have to clear waivers first. they are cut, they clear waivers, and THEN they can be put on your practice squad.

cottam

I like Cottam, glad to see he’s the new starter, I hope he can produce atleast half of what Tony G. did/does, on his first time out as a starter.

as far as pioli liking big guys. Brady is tall but a damn twig. not intimidating by any means. sorry i just dislike brady lol

Proud Supporter of Tyler Thigpen.

by nfamous209 on Apr 29, 2009 8:13 AM CDT reply actions

half of TGs production

is exactly what they need from Cottam, and would be a big win.
half of TG is, what? 50 catches for 500 yds ?
if Cottam does that this year, and the receivers step up… this is a potent offense.

by stagdsp on Apr 29, 2009 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I think

Cottam will do just fine. He will never be as great as TG, but then again nobody ever will. The one thing I have noticed about everybody since TG got traded, is everybody is so hung up on the TE position. Lets not forget, this is the New Chiefs Era, under Todd Haley. Todd does not use the TE as one of the primary targets as the Old Chiefs did. He uses the TE for more blocking and for Dump offs.
Am I sad that TG got traded? YES, but I will always be a TG fan no matter where he’s at. He has already said he will retire as a Chief. To me he will always be a Chief and I will continue to wear his Jersey at the games.
