Around SBN: Kentucky Football: Tee Martin Reportedly Leaving for USC

Dear Lanier63,

"I have no idea what to think or how to respond."

That was my thoughts with each and every pick this past weekend.  After considering each pick and what it means to our team, I may have finally found an answer, at least for myself.

I was expecting the "sexy pick" probably along with 98% of everyone else this weekend.  I believe I was expecting the "sexy" each round along with a few trades. Of course we didnt get any of those things which led me to an almost shocked feeling about everything Ive heard about Pioli and Company.

But now I think I see the light.

After what we went through with Carl the past 20 years, Sexy was the one pick that would re-energize the fan base and make people want to buy the tickets. But sexy is not what we needed. Scott said he would "Build a team" not rebuild. As so many peeps have mentioned lately, you have to build inside out and this is what Scott did. Now that he has let go of the remaining Carl regime (scouts) he can cocentrate on getting his people in place to do the leg work and find the new ingrediants for our team.

I believe we are going to be just fine, not necessarily this year, but in a few years to come and its going to be fun. Climb on board and buckle up, this is a cant miss attraction!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

We can blame LSU since we got a lot of 1st rounders from them :)

I don’t know what to think about the draft. On one hand I’m disappointed but on the other I figure if we all knew how to be a GM we wouldn’t be blogging.

It’s a wait and see, but I won’t wait another 20 years like the last regime.

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.

I have been a fan for a long time

I too don’t know what to think about this draft. I am going to admit that my faith in pioli has diminished a little.
I hope Haley is one helluva coach so we can get these guys playing some serious ball cuz right now I don’t expect much. Another shitty season is going to be tough to take and right now, that’s what it looks like is gonna happen.

We aren't GM's nor do we coach in the NFL

For me I will trust in Pioli, hope for the best and wait and see. In this case, seeing will be believing.

+1 .....Question is Pioli writting to you or Haley...or are you speaking about yourself in 3rd person?

Good point ….. but makes sense considering that most of the scouts were holdovers from the KingCarl and Kong Edwards era.

sexy is not what we needed. Scott said he would “Build a team” not rebuild.

Take the safe picks, because your not too sure how the other prospects were graded by unfamiliar scouts.

Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

There's a lot you probably didn't know about Lanier.

See Laniers complete story here

You have to scroll down to find his story. it should be required reading at AP, in fact we may create a test for new members before they join.

Wow...after reading Laniers bio....I was like is that for real?

Half tempted to google it so see if its somebody else’s online story.

Sounds way to interesting from any one person, but dude….that was one hell of a lifes story, and am glad to have known such a character.

Here’s to you Lanier63! I would enjoy spending an hour just to listening to your story. Could be a made for TV mini series. :)

I am reluctantly cautious regarding my judgment on this draft

I really want to flame 80% of our picks; however, the new front office deserves the leniency to establish themselves. They deserve even more patience from the fan base as they had to work with the previous scouting department.

I fully admit that I went all Chiefs fanboy during the first day of the draft. The fact that I went fanboy, only serves to undermine my own perception of myself as a GM. A GM wouldn’t succumb to his emotions as I did, hence, I am no GM.

I am a fan, and I can say that I disagree with many of the picks on paper…especially considering the players available with each pick. Being passionate and semi-unreasonable is part of being a fan.

Pioli deserves the time to prove his prowess or incompetence. Regardless of my own opinions of this draft, I truly feel we have to give it time reveal its merit.

I will say, without hesitation, if this had been a Carl draft circa 1999, I would be a raging fool at the moment.

I am willing to give Pioli, and what is sure to be an evolving coaching staff over the near term, 5 years to fully develop his players under his coaching staff* and his scouting team.

*I still believe the defensive coaching staff is not finalized, and probably won’t be until next season. At which time, the defensive staff (Romeo Crennel as DC) will draft for their new scheme and adjust the D enough to warrant 1 additional year for each player to develop.

And before anybody jumps in

I know Romeo runs a 3-4. The 3-4 scheme he would implement would be different than the 3-4 any other DC would…thus requiring an adjustment period, as with any other scheme variant.

I wrote this to myself

to remind me of the things DTR said so eloquently. I am no GM, however I found myself playing GM before Saturday. There’s nothing wrong with playing GM, but we have to build a team from scratch. Carl left us with a few shovels, but someone has to dig the holes. I wanted to bring myself back into reality and get ready for a fun ride this year.

Me too.

I get a little giddy thinking of the names on our D Line…it could be so scary dominant.

Then, I think of Krumrie still coaching them, with Pendy and Gibbs sprinkling their fail on them.

For those new members who may want to attack my comment immediately above, we had a rather definitive consensus on AP regarding our defensive coaching staff a few months ago.

My thinking is along the same lines as DTR and Lanier in this case.

As a long time fan of the Chiefs I had my head in the clouds as well as the past draft was concerned and was some what brought back down to the ground. I am trying to remain grounded in this from now on and think things through more on what the GM and HC are doing for this team. I of course like many others want instant gratification concerning the Chiefs, but deep down know that this will take a couple of years to jell. Keep in mind what Pioli said about getting players in to the team and how they are looking for them 24/7 all year round, not just this years FA and Draft. Indeed the team is not yet complete.

I still want to believe that Pendy and Gibbs may have not been good head coaches and are a much higher caliber of defensive coaches and are not sprinkling fail on them as DTR has suggested. I am taking a more optimistic look as far as that goes.

by oldchiefsfan on Apr 28, 2009 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with your comments DTR

Lately, we’ve been on the same page on several issues.

But I am fairly nausous reading all the ‘Pioli I trust’ comments and posts.

There is nothing wrong with giving him time, and giving him the benefit of the doubt. However, blindly agreeing with everything he does, only b/c he did it, makes you a mindless robot.

Personally, I really disliked the draft (I was ok with the Washington and Lawrence picks. Does that mean I’m calling for Pioli’s head? Of course not. I was ecstatic when we signed him, and I’m not going to bail on the guy b/c I disagree with his first draft (and his HC choice…sorry, I do).

I hope I’m completely wrong about both, I hope that Pioli makes me look like a fool and that Jackson is an impact player. Magee ends up as valueable in the 3rd as a starting RT or rush DE/OLB would have been.

It amazes me how many people have defended each and every move made until this point with the simple mantra of ‘Pioli I trust.’ Well…ok. But to me, you should have your own opinion on moves based on…you know, your independent thoughts, not simply based on what our GM, who you’ve chosen to assign your unquestioned loyalty has done.

That’s not to say that by questioning his decisions, you are questioning his competacy for the job. Its to understand that even if he turns into our own Ron Wolf or Bill Polian, he is going to make mistakes. In the draft, he’ll make several. That’s the nature of the draft.

It’s also not to say that you (or I in this case) think that you are perfect and incapable of making mistakes.

I am also of the opinion that our defensive coaching staff, at this point, is unacceptable. If you added Crennel to the equation, it would go from a weakness to a strength, instantly. I’m hoping this happens ASAP, if that is next offseason, I’ll deal with that.

This was a whiskey aided post, and no, I’m not going to proofread, so I apologize in advance.

I think it is all about the coaching at this point. I want to see if these guys can make these players play above their potential.
If they put these players in the right scheme and make some good game time decisions, hopefully this season won’t completely suck. Right now I think that is the best I can hope for.

Pioli

It takes a lot of balls to pick the guy no one was talking about – Tyson Jackson. The easy route would have been to take Curry or Monroe. Peterson wouldn’t have shown the courage. I hope the Chiefs’ draft board looks different than Kiper’s.
