Some Optimism Amongst Draft Woes

Post draft day one is just about over and I've been seeing a lot of negative commentors and posters. Apparently the Chiefs failed to draft to need, well, I don't know much about the draft nor do I know anything about building a winner in the NFL. But in my humble opinion I think we'll be just fine in 09. Here's some room for solace.

Offensive Line

Problem: I was in the fold of drafting a tackle with our #3 pick. With Monroe at #3 I was almost expecting it to happen, but it didn't. Instead we went defense, defense, defense, then finally a RT in the fifth.

Case for Optimism: We picked up Mike Goff and have Brian Waters on the roster. In my opinion guard is one of the more underrated positions in the NFL. It's hard for any tackle to succeed unless a solid guard is playing next to him. Last year we didn't really have a solid option at Guard and it showed as Damion Macintosh and Rudy Niswanger struggled immensely. With Goff and Waters on hand, Niswanger and Macintosh/ Richardson/ Brown will have an easier time going up against opoosition

Linebackers

Problem: We have borderline bust, old, blank, old currently starting in the four linebaking positions for our new 3-4. So reasonable solution would be to use a third or fourth on a solid day one starter to fill that last slot right? Guess not

Case for Optimism: Zach Thomas and Mike Vrabel are a lot better than we think they are. Despite Thomas' old age he is still a performer who, despite playing out of his best position (Brady James held that down in Dallas) still had a productive season. He keeps himself in shape and plays well for his age. Vrabel is a give it all guy. Even Vrabel falls to injury Beisel and Robinson are ready contributors. My point is this, with Thomas Vrabel and Johnson staggered across the linebacking core we can afford a free agent signing or Beisel to man the last linebacking spot.
