Check back later for undrafted free agent signings. Let us know if you approve of how the Kansas City Chiefs draft went down in the poll below. We'll ask you to grade the draft tomorrow.
For now, sit back, relax and enjoy the temporary tranquility. This will be the final open thread of the 2009 NFL draft here at AP. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Haha I was just joking
I thought it was funny
Haha
I was just going to post that myself.
And I’m wondering, is it pronounced Suck-up? Because that would be funny. Ryan Suckup.
I agree with the picks
because they are part of a bigger plan. The one thing that Pioli believes in (and learned from Belichick) is to pick players that do certain things well and put them in situations to do those things in the game. I know he is not the coach but I have a feeling that he and Haley think alike, otherwise he would not have been hired as our coach. This plan might not come to fruition right away but with the young players Herm drafted last year, this draft, and next years, we will be on our way.
The picks aren't flashy- and thats okay
We aren’t going to be considered a draft winner or get much media attention but it doesn’t matter. These players our right players for our team. Tyson Jackson and Alex MaGee our perfect fits for our Defensive line. Donald Washington has major upside and is worth the risk of a 4th round pick. We also picked up a road grader right tackle and a big boy running back and a damn fast receiver to go with a tight end and a kicker picked up late. Time will tell if these players are the best players we could have had, but I think Scott already has a pretty good idea that he’s got the right players for our team.
+1
“flashy” means you bought into the hype.
We’ll see what SP’s results are, in the next year or two. Hopefully, they will out-perform the hyped picks…
Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.
Next on the need list: linebacker, and both lines

I'll say one thing
I feel a million times better about our defensive line. I was really concerned about it, and now I feel like it’s at least solid if not a real strength. Jackson, Tyler, and Dorsey starting with Magee providing good depth. I like the sound of that.
Magee
He could end up starting at the other, if we continue to run the Under. Tyson will play 5 tech on non TE side, Magee will play a 5 tech on TE side, Dorsey 3 tech, Tyler 0 tech (NT). Vrabel/Hali/Johnston/McBride predators, ZT ILB, DJ at other LB.
Not too bad…
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
I don't know
In one of the interviews today, Haley said he planned to use Dorsey as an outside guy (end). This makes me think they might just go straight to the 3-4, rather than use the 4-3 under as a transition period. I think we have the right D-line for a 3-4 now, and that was one of the main things that was keeping us from just going 3-4 to begin with.
I think "outside" may mean 3 tech in the Under
If you listen to how the reporter asked the question thats the vibe i got. I think the reporter has no idea what an under is and was asking about a 3-4 when haley thought they were asking bout the under.
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
I'm happy with the D picks
but still concerned about protecting our Q-Backs and making lanes for the RBs. I do like that we picked up Colin Brown, but don’t see him making an immediate impact. I look forward to this next week to see what we do with the remaining Free Agent pool.
I actually could see Colin Brown starting right away.
It’s funny, I watch every Mizzou game, and I remember watching Brown dominating some guys and thinking “I wonder where a right tackle like that would fall in the draft… I hope the Chiefs pick this guy up.”…and we did!
I think he'll compete for the job
with McIntosh and Richardson. Out of those three, I’m pulling for Richardson. Hopefully he’s been working hard.
If Richardson could't unseat Mac last year why could he this year?
Muir will decide and I will imagine he KNOWS what a O-lineman looks like after 80 years exp :)

Richardson was a rookie last year.
He’s now had a year of coaching and a year to add strength. McIntosh is aging and is a player on the decline. It should be an interesting position battle.
Like a battle between a couple of Mountain Rams :)

I agree
I think Pioli and staff have a plan and they accomplished what they wanted from this draft. Some strong competitive players came from these picks and hopefully will benefit this process of building a winning Chiefs team again. It looks like they brought in the grandpas to play a year or two with dj and while building a strong front line with a up and coming secondary. Think Donald Washington will join the youngsters in the back and make a impact. Pioli knows this team wont be fixed overnight (many fans dont see this imo) and started well and will look toward those backers and solid o line in free agency and next years draft. Thanks to Chris and primetime…..good work this weekend, it was fun.
I would give some props to Herm and his staff for some spade work at the foundation level.
Without Dorsey and Tyler and Cottam and Carr and Flowers and etc.
Pioli would not have been able to draft a late RB or CB or OT or Kicker.
last props for Herm from me as he had us pick # 3 and we could’nt trade down because of some stupid game day decisions that kept us from drafting 5th and screwing the League this year much better than that Maingenie Belecheck wanta be screwed up trading down for 6th rdrs.

This draft class
was real lackluster. A real bummer after last years, in fact. I think the best pick we made was in Round 4th with Washington. I’ll go ahead and go record saying Peterson & Herm had a better draft class last year than Pioli & Haley had this year.

I'll go further
as a Chiefs fan, I think I would have rather had Curry in R1, Everette Brown R2, and Michael Johnson in R3 with Thigpen starting next year – than Tyson Jackson, Cassel & Vrabel, and Tits Magee. But that’s just me…

Thats a close one...
But I know I’d rather have Curry and Michael Johnson than Tyson Jackson and Magee.
Or even Curry and Magee (since they’d have actually needed that 3-4 DE if they didn’t take Jackson) instead of Jackson and Magee.
Or lastly, Monroe or A. Smith and Johnson.
But my #1 choice would have been to offer Igor 4 years $20 million and take Curry and Johnson.
Hopefully you're right.
Last year: won the draft, went 2-14.
This year: “crap draft”, …?
You think it's coincidence that I bleed red?

Thats the tradeoff
sexy, talented players with worlds of potential but coaches couldn’t get anything out of them vs. mediocre players who coaches get the most out of them.

But the tradeoff was Sexy fire coach new Coach not Sexy but Coach em up.
Like the A+B better than a Possible B+A approache with coaches/front office that sucks!!!!!

I agree with you
But its not really a fair comparison as last year Herm and Carl had an extra 1st and 3rd.
Still, I agree with you that this years haul was disappointing, especially considering the guys we took vs. who we could have picked up.
Duke Robinson in the 2nd FTW!
God, did I miss that one.

By far the biggest miss
Was AQ Shipley…guy went in our 2 round mock, and didn’t go off until the middle of the 7th.
Gerald Cadogan
This cat wasnt picked up. i wonder why. A lot of grades had him as a 2nd to 3rd round talent.
Alex Boone
OT from Ohio State went undrafted

I like the picks
Of course 73% agree with me on Lawrence. We need a kick returner and his scouting report made him sound like he’s the one that it will be.
The TE could be a surprise, since if Pioli is moving up in the 7th round to get him, there must be a reason.
Jackson will be the new management’s guy. Everyone here sounds like we passed on Reggie Bush and took Mario Williams. I’m quite sure that’s the case with this draft. I don’t think Curry was a can’t miss player despite what the experts say. Even if that was the case Mario Williams turned out to be a beast, so I hope we can look forward to that.
I don’t know enough about the offensive linemen to form an opinion.
Washington, they said, has a ton of potential and has amazing athletic skills, just hasn’t figured out how to use them. I guess the best we can hope for is that he is somehow able to take a spot from a CB we have, but we were 7th in turnovers forced, so that might be hard to do.
Are you F***ing kidding me!
This draft was crap. PURE CRAP. Oh, and Tyson Jackson DOES NOT look like Mario Williams. Carlos Dunlap….who we should have selected NEXT YEAR….looks like Mario Williams. Just to give you an idea both Williams and Dunlap were pass rushing beasts in College, stood about 6 foot 13 and ran about a 6.6 40. Frickin Tyson Jackson runs damn near a 5.0 and got 4 stinking sacks in college. The two Patriots work horses are a better comparison.
As you guys can see, im still pissed. I still havent hashed out all of my feelings on this crap but, I have a few rough draft things I would like to throw out.
See, this is my main problem. With the movies we made, it is like Pioli and Haley are trying to make us the Patriots 10 FRICKIN MIN. FROM NOW! This draft was weak on high end selections for an ideal 3-4. Dont fool yourselves. Both defensive ends were a REACH. It is very special and very rare to pick this high in the draft…unless your the Lions or Rams. We should have drafted the way 99% of us thought we should draft. Filling positions of NEED with TOP TALLENT. You know the usual suspects…we have been talking about them for months. We are not going to be play-off contenders this year and probably not next year too. That is why we should have filled the NEED this year and worked on the 3-4 next year. Ill tell you exactly what is gona happen now. We are gona pick like 15th next year, and Carlos Dunlap is gona go in the top 5, and we will cry…why couldnt we select a guy like that with last years pick. WELL WE COULD HAVE. If we would have selected NEED for this year. We probably would have struggled next year. Then we WOULD have been in the right position to damn near finish our rebuild. I hate to admit it….but I yern for Herm’s drafting style.
Now, my unrefined main point being made I would like to say this. I still believe in Pioli and Hali. 5 years from now we might be looking back from a super bowl win and say this is where it started. I am not denying that. But, my gut instinct is that we are going in the wrong direction. We still may get there via Pioli genius. But he has to prove a lot to me now. Not that he cant do it. But im feeling grim and kinda sick to my stomach….STILL.
