Chiefs Trade with Dolphins; Select Miami (OH) TE Jake O'Connell

Jake_oconnell_medium Oconnell_medium

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded up to the 237th selection int he NFL Draft to select Jake O'Connell, tight end out of Miami (OH) in the Mid-American Conference.

6'3", 255 pounds

Scouts, Inc has him rated as the 50th tight end.  He has a 36.5'" vertical and is described as having " exceptional ball skills and that he continues to grow as a blocker."

The Chiefs might not be expecting much out of him:

Senior tight end Jake O'Connell is the top prospect on offense.  A hard-working college player who does a solid job as both a pass-catcher and blocker, O'Connell possesses marginal size/speed numbers and will have a tough time making it as a team's third tight end.

The Chiefs traded up for this guy. I would imagine he has a better chance of making the team than your average seventh round pick. Plus they traded with Pioli's father-in-law, Bill Parcells.

O'Connell is not on our draft interests page.

  • Round 1, Pick 3 (3) - DE Tyson Jackson LSU
  • Round 2, #34 traded to New England Patriots in exchange for QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel
  • Round 3, Pick 3 (67) - DT Alex Magee, Purdue
  • Round 4, Pick 2 (102) CB Donald Washington, Ohio St.
  • Round 5, Pick 3 (139) T Colin Brown, Missouri
  • Round 6, Pick 2 (175) WR Quinten Lawrence, McNeese St.
  • Round 7, Pick 3 (212) RB Javarris Williams, Tenn. St.
  • Round 7, Pick 28 (237*) TE Jake O'Connell, Miami (OH)
  • Round 7, Pick 47 (256)

*Trade with Dolphins. Chiefs gave up next year's 7th round pick for O'Connell.

Why?

Why would we trade up to get a guy that you may convince to walk on as a UFA? I don’t get the logic.

by TXChiefan on Apr 26, 2009 6:02 PM CDT reply actions

Because he may go somewhere else given the choice

This way you are sure you get him

zacKKKKK for Cy Young!

that's the key

if you draft them you own them. Plus the kid might feel good that they traded up to get him

by Nelly on Apr 26, 2009 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Pioli is good at drafting in the later rounds

This had to be something he couldn’t pass up.

AFC West Champs in 2009? Mayyybee.

But are we going to run alot of two TE sets?

we have 4 TE’s now before training camp and signed two and traded one this week.
This seems like we are trying to make our Red Zone Offense/ 3rd down Offense stronger.
A short yardage RB/FB a TE to catch short passes or block for short yardage runs.

Do they make a big deal over Mr. Irrelevant?

As in, will they stop talking and focus on the stage for the last pick in the draft?
Maybe?

You think it's coincidence that I bleed red?

Ughhhhh

I just want the season to start already….

I am ready for next year’s draft too…

by woodman212 on Apr 26, 2009 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

I'm ready for next year's draft, too

Although I’m not ready for the 4 months of speculation before it.

by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Me too...

Let’s make predictions…

I think we will have another year or LB vs. OT debates….you?

by woodman212 on Apr 26, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Predictions...

I think we may have LB vs OG debates…
I still don’t know why we didn’t draft any LB in this draft..

Probly Vrabel, Thomas...

But they are no long-term solutions…

GO to Hell :)

I love the draft but let’s wait till April 2010

by Steve_Chiefs on Apr 26, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

They aren’t long term solutions…thats why i was surprised when we didn’t draft any. Do you think we have a solid LB core as of now?

by Wrestler189s on Apr 26, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

We have warm bodies as backups

IMO Pioli will be watching LB position till opening day at Baltimore :)

Wait, do we still

have the Mr. Irrelevant pick? This was a pretty random pick…I thought we already had 3 TE’s?

by Wrestler189s on Apr 26, 2009 6:06 PM CDT reply actions

Yes we still have it

You can’t trade compensatory picks.

by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?

I didn’t know that. Thanks.

by Wrestler189s on Apr 26, 2009 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

…We still have UDFA crap after this, eh?

by woodman212 on Apr 26, 2009 6:06 PM CDT reply actions

Yes

They will be coming tonight, I would imagine.

by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yeah?

Wow, my term paper is not going to get done.

You think it's coincidence that I bleed red?

by Mully on Apr 26, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

that is what Mayock said. He mentioned all of the small school players being drafted as a sign of the draft being weak and teams having to scout all over the place

by Nelly on Apr 26, 2009 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I hate to keep comparing things to the Pats

but that is where our guy is from and that is all we have to gauge this. They never really drafted a player that was just a splash guy on draft day that wowed people. Mayo was a great pick last year but they draft players that perform. We need to wait and see on these guys.

AFC West Champs in 2009? Mayyybee.

by cmpotter on Apr 26, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

O'Connell sounds like a guy who could play special teams as well

with his speed, 4.6, could be very useful on special teams, even if he doesn’t contribute on offense

Vertical

Pro Football Weekly had a feature on the vertical. O’Connell was tied with J. Cook of So Carolina for the best vertical of 41.0". Don’t know why the descrepancy with Scouts.inc.

Assume the Washington (45.0" vertical[!]) pick and this one were to address the Chief’s vertical game.
