VIDEO: Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley Talks about the Team's Third and Fourth Round Picks
Here are a few highlights from the press conference with Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, who is talking about the Chiefs' third and fourth round selections. The Chiefs took Purdue DL Alex Magee in the third round and Ohio St. CB Donald Washington.
On both of the selections...
“Very excited about both of them. Alex (Magee) is a guy that is another versatile defensive lineman, was an inside tackle who was asked to change positions and move out to an end last year. He did it unselfishly and, at the same time, added to his versatility. He’s a big, long-armed guy and we like that type of build playing the end. It gives us another guy that has a chance to come in and compete right away on first, second and third down because of his inside experience.
“Donald Washington is another potentially four-down player because we think he should be a very good special teamer, but a guy that has a chance to come in and compete to play in that nickel or sub position early on and compete at corner.”
On taking three defensive players with the first three picks...
“Our philosophy is to take a combination of best available player plus need and if you’ve been around here a little bit they’ve had a little trouble stopping people. I don’t think in this league you have much of a chance to win if you can’t slow the other offense down. It’s just the way it worked out, more than by design.”
Talk about your all-time understatements with that bolded quote.
On where Glenn Dorsey fits in...
“Things can change but not inside out of the gate. I would still see Glenn as outside right now. But that will all sort of shake itself out as we go forward. But again, I think this is all about competition and the more competition you have at each position the better. Right now our defensive line got a lot more competitive.”
On Donald Washington making an impact right away...
Donald is someone we’re excited about. We didn’t think we’d have a chance when we made our third round pick. We actually were talking about trying to move up to get him and just couldn’t find the right fit. So, the fact that he was still there when we picked in the fourth was exciting.
On Donald Washington's behavior "red flags"...
“We really feel like we did our homework on Donald. We have very good relationships with the Ohio State staff from the head coach on down to the position coaches and coordinators. We did a lot of work with them. We have a close relationship with Donald’s agent and we had Donald in here for a day and a half and spent a lot of time with him. So, we feel good about where we’re at with Donald.”
Check the upcoming FanShot on the front page for the Donald Washington conference call transcript.
Upcoming picks for the Chiefs:
- Round 5, Pick 3 (139)
- Round 6, Pick 2 (175)
- Round 7, Pick 3 (212)
- Round 7, Pick 47 (256)

Versatility seems to be the key
Magee can play inside and outside. Washington plays corner and special teams.
Hey that's cheating...
YOu can be the first to post after creating a new thread…. :)

Duke Robinson
They need to draft him, we really need a guard.
That would free up Waters
At least for the time being. We could trade him for a future pick.

What about Goff?
He’s played C before.
Waters-Goff-Robinson?

What about Niswanger at C?
Goff-Niswanger-Robinson (or flip flop the guards).

I don't dislike that.
I’m just not sold that we’ll trade Waters. I could roll with that interior, though.

Thanks for pointing out my reach in the last thread, bastard. :)
Oddly enough, my Harvin pick wasn’t that far off. Stupid draft.

Sounds to me
like Haley’s convinced he can teach offense. They want to get players on defense. I’m a littel drunk already, but, I’m on board.
I posted this in the last thread..
but does anybody think Byrd from LSU is going to be worht a UFA shot? I do.

They just updated on PFT
that he is in good condition now. Out of intensive care, sounds like he’ll have a full recovery.

Duke Robinson..
Robinson-Work eithic and weight concerns says Mayock
It's gotta be an O-lineman.
Duke and Meredith are both some of the TOP players left available, plus they would fill needs.
Do it, Pioli!
By the way, Mayock just said Duke’s problem is weight.
Haley and his post practice wind sprints will take care of that

Well...
Once again, we’re in position to get Duke or Meredith, at least one of them will be there. Hope Meredith is the pick.
NIce pick by baltimore.

If Pioli goes Meredith or Duke
You have to give him props for knowing teams boards and waiting until 5 to get them, b/c I doubt Washington would have made it there…but who knows.

I can't find him on any of the Draft sites.
Hopefully they knew something and he was actually wanted.
And at least it was an O-lineman.
I like it.
this breaks my heart
but he’s only a pass blocker. He can’t run block to save his life

Yeah.
If you lined up in an I and ran behind him, I’m sure t would be a lot easier for him to run over people.
He doesn’t seem to be a fit at Missouri, where movement is paramount as in all spread offenses.
But whatever.
That's what I'm saying
the dude has the size. He may just not be highly toted because he was in the wrong scheme
I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.
then explain Loadholt
in the OU spread, who couldn’t move laterally if you put a gun to his head

It seems like a reach to me.
But then, so did a lot of other picks, only to find out later that teams wanted them and stuff and stuff.
He’s a big guy, at least. And everyone knows we needed an offensive lineman.
Man would you be happier if we took a Spread QB?
