Alright Kansas City Chiefs fan. You ready for rounds 3-7 of the 2009 NFL Draft?
In case you're just checking out the draft for the first time, the Chiefs' lone pick of day one was LSU DE Tyson Jackson. Check out his player page for all of the latest info.
First things first, here are some links from Mocking the Draft that you'll want to check out:
- Top 20 still available at the start of round three
- AFC day one thoughts | NFC day one thoughts
- Team-by-team selections from day one
Here are the Chiefs' picks today:
- Round 3, Pick 3 (67)
- Round 4, Pick 2 (102)
- Round 5, Pick 3 (139)
- Round 6, Pick 2 (175)
- Round 7, Pick 3 (212)
- Round 7, Pick 47 (256)
That top 20 list by Mocking the Draft is a good link to check out. With the Chiefs' issues rushing the passer, do we take Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson?

Let's go, Duke Robinson!
Best guard in the draft.
I don't have religion. I have Baduizm...and Billie Holiday...and Janet. Actually, just Janet.
Lawrence Sidbury (OLB) - Richmond
This kid is the pass rusher we need in a 3-4
zacKKKKK for Cy Young!
True. :)

Johnson, Sidbury, Robinson, Thomas
Johnson or Sidbury if they go OLB/pass rusher. Duke Robinson if OL. Mike Thomas if WR/KR. Will likely depend on which one(s) they think might still be around in Round 4. Don’t forget Iowa RB Shonn Greene!
What do you guys think of Jared Cook at TE
Freakishly athletic TE from South Carolina
Brad Cottam
3rd round pick last year should work just fine for us. Not discrediting Cook at all but the seldom use of a tightend in Haleys O should make this a non-need.

IMHO Rams with the best draft so far
Jason smith
Laurinitis
and going to pick up something sweet to begin 3
hate to say it, as not a rams fan
Good picks indeed

Best draft so far – Bengals. Andre Smith, Muauluga, & Michael Johnson. A month ago those were all projected 1st rounders

You can still get a starting RB in the 5th round, don't need to take one in the 3rd round
zacKKKKK for Cy Young!
I know it's risky
but I’m kinda hoping for Michael Johnson.
I have to admit a part of does too.

And then
He’ll be switching positions. I’m always nervous about doing that.
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions
he's project 3/4 OLB
pure pass rusher. 1st round talent if they can motivate him.
I think
Coffman will still be there in 4th a lot of good TE’s left, still doubt we pick any of them though
I like Johnson
but we can’t go with another DE. We just can’t.
Funny
hearing Herm talk about “Running Back By Committee” a few years removed from most carries EVER by a RB…

Duke! Duke! Duke!
And then, hopefully we can trade Brian Waters at some point for a 3rd round pick + like a 7th, or something. Then with the second 3rd, take Lawrence Sidbury. That would be awesome.
oh sweet leaves lots of choices
how do we pass up johnson- haven’t really adressed the pass rush?
Duke or meredith are choices 1 + 2

Piloi loves D-line man

Pioli*
"I can only imagine what it is going to be like in that town if we are fortunate to build a winner. You win there, you can sense that it would be something really special." - Todd Haley
D-Line depth, man.
I love it.
NFLN guys say he could play both the nose and 5-technique. So, Dorsey and Tank’s backup, if neither of them can handle the switch.
I was trying to spit all this out
and then I saw you just said verbatim what I was typing. So i’ll just give you a +1 and move on.
Dorsey
I think this says a lot of what they think of Dorsey. At least in the 3-4.
Well,
I’m guessing we’re not trading Waters now. And why not Johnson rather than this guy?
I think it's because Johnson was 3/4 OLB - 4/3 DE
This guy is 5 technique or 3 technique DE. preference to scheme. makes you wonder if they are making a play for a peppers

I think Pioli doesn't like what he sees in our D-Line....
I was hoping he’d use the 3rd pick on O-line

If our D-line improves
It will make the LBs and the DBs better. You build teams on the trenches fellas
To you haters
Pioli knows D lineman, and he had ALL night to think about this. This is HIS pick – they guy that he wanted.
In Pioli I trust.
All day yesterday and night
"I can only imagine what it is going to be like in that town if we are fortunate to build a winner. You win there, you can sense that it would be something really special." - Todd Haley
does any one have an explanation for the obsession with defensive lineman that this team has
OU SUCKS!!!!!!
I think the worst defense that Pioli had ever SEEN
needing fixing. He can’t help that the old regime tried to fix it and failed.
I would love to be able to stop the rush
As much as I enjoy seeing a sack destroy a pass play, if they do not get to the QB and the pass gets thrown, there is still hope from the DB’s that the play will gain no yards. But the flow through rush defense we have been fielding just kills me!
Here is what one scouting report said:
Also being looked at as a five-technique by 3-4 teams…Played out of position at defensive end as a senior…Moved back inside at the Senior Bowl and looked awfully impressive…An underachiever who has the tools you look for but for one reason or another he doesn’t always play up to them…Could excel as a three-technique…Might get misevaluated based on his senior film and could wind up being a steal for someone.
Also, they say that he played DT his entire career, then volunteered to move to LE because no one else on Purdue could play the position. So, that’s why he had a subpar Senior season, which is why he dropped beyond what he could have.
The more I read on this Draft, the more I love this pick.
Great, thanks!
That makes a lot of sense now.
Nice
Could be our steal. What’s this mean for Dorsey though?
"I can only imagine what it is going to be like in that town if we are fortunate to build a winner. You win there, you can sense that it would be something really special." - Todd Haley
situational perhaps
It doesn’t matter if he gets 15 snaps. If he creates havoc and is used right who cares if he starts or not
Could Dorsey move to DE?
Or do you guys see the Chiefs sticking MaGee out there?
OR do you see the Chiefs splitting time between the two?
exactly
when you’re talking D-Line there’s a LOT of rotation involved. Those guys aren’t in there for every snap the whole game.
I saw him at a purdue game last year when I was back home
He is a pretty crazy player. I’ll see if I can find some highlight tape
"...Said he couldn't go on the American way"
does this mean he is piolis NT of the future?
OU SUCKS!!!!!!

Our D-line is getting scary
"I can only imagine what it is going to be like in that town if we are fortunate to build a winner. You win there, you can sense that it would be something really special." - Todd Haley
Chiefs Picks
reminds me of the Dallas Cowboys moves of the 90s. They had a plethora of D-lineman they rotated in. In turn they made the defense better. I think we are going to improve in this area.
I bet Raiders pick Cook... He is a freak and had the best 40 time...
Unless they choose the ball boy from the Bengals
Ball boy. :)

Maybe they're going to try and make Dorsey a Nose
It wouldn’t have been my choice, but I can’t think with all the holes we have that you’d be taking guys at the top of the 3rd to be backups.
Here is another little snippet
from the end of NFL.com’s player profile
A team looking for a quick under tackle like Ryan or Arizona’s Darnell Dockett could find a similar player in Magee.:
That Darnell Docket thing really caught my eye. I suppose that’s what we were looking for in this pick. So, when we play the 4-3 Under he’ll line up in Dockett’s position, and then move back and play both positions on the 3-4, if necessary.
+1

Very interesting. But I thought Dorsey was supposed to be that guy? Guess you can’t ever have enough good d-linemen…Giants anyone?
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions
That's what I thought.
And Dorsey was probably the best available on our current roster.
Apparently, the staff likes McGee more, though.
Gilbert
Has anyone ever seen so many chubbies because a guy jumped out of a pool on youtube? Is that what we are really making our wishlists off of?

this is another puzzling pick.
a no name DT that they’ll have to make a DE? why not add another LSU lineman in rick-jean francois instead. Does anyone thing that passing on duke robinson and herman johnson mean waters will be staying
because ricky jean did shit all at LSU
this guy played DE his senior year. good 3-4 end. decent pick
+1

Damnit, wanted o-line!
Pioli loves d, must be content with the o-linemen we have.
Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!
I think he just saw crap everywhere he looked on our D-line
I was hoping he would go O-line also.

Bengals take Michael Johnson.
They have gotten awesome value with their second two picks, and drafting based off of talent and talent alone, pretty much.
If all three of their picks pan out, they are having an excellent Draft.
I bet
he’ll underperform with the Bengals…they have NO character.
by thejesuslizard on Apr 26, 2009 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions
If all three blow up and
become character issues, they set their team back another couple of years, too.
Hey guys just woke up
where are we?
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
Alex Magee, DT outta Purdue
Figures to play 3-4 DE, but a quote up above here had someone comparing him to Darnell Dockett in the Cardinals scheme.
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2009 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions
#5 Bengals go M Johnson
Chiefs passed on him to pick Alex McGee, D lineman from Purdue

We wanted to get something up there on Magee. Click here for the new thread.
Building Back
I understand what Mr P is doing but for 3 years we have been picking D Linemen, his picks say we have wasted those picks for the past 2 yrs and wasted millions let alone the effort put out. But when do we get past the line and work on something else like the O line to protect our new QB, or the receiving corp to give him some weapons to throw at?
Alex Magee
Are your kidding me? There were at least 10 different ways we could have gone that would be better than this pick.
This draft is shaping up horribly, most dissapointed I have been in Pioli’s tenure.
and still no o lineman or wideout
just what we need…another corner
The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
