Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Let's all take this opportunity to laugh at the Raiders

At #7 overall with Eugene Monroe, Michael Crabtree and Brian Orakpo still on the board, they take.... Darius Heyward Bey.

How bad was this pick?  Here are Bey's college stats:

Stats Overview Receiving Rushing Fumbles
YEAR REC YDS AVG LNG TD ATT YDS AVG LNG TD FUM LST
2006 45 694 15.4 96 5 5 5 1.0 9 0 0 0
2007 51 786 15.4 63 3 5 107 21.4 54 1 0 0
2008 42 609 14.5 80 5 15 202 13.5 76 1 0 0

Never more than 51 catches in a season, never more than 786 yds in a season.  There was talk of the New York Giants maybe taking him at #29 overall, but if not he was expected to fall into the 2nd round.  But Al decides to take him 7th overall.

That was laughable enough, but then the 2nd round happened.

With projected 1st round picks like Rey Maualuga, Max Unger and Everette Brown still on the board, the Raiders traded down 7 spots and took....

Safety Michael Mitchell.

Who?

The ESPN guys had to look him up in the draft book issued by the NFL because they had no clue who he was.  They asked Kiper about him and Kiper replied that that he likely would have still been there in the FIFTH ROUND and that at least a couple of NFL teams had him pegged as an UNDRAFTED free agent!

This was one Raiders fans reaction to the trade:

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Here's another:

Maybe DHB and Mitchell were the only two guys who can give Al a hard-on at this age.

My own theory is that in his dementia, Al Davis believes he is a prisoner in Leavenworth and is trying to be the "craziest motha in here" so he doesn't get gang raped in the shower.

Broncos

convinced me today McDaniels is in over his and the Raiders, really, how do they even have fans anymore? I’d much rather be a Lion fan than a Raider fan

You can call the Chiefs dumb to for not making a move for

Maclin
Clay Mattews
Brittion
Magula
Brown
any of them would have been sweat. I wish we could have got Maclin he would have made day 1 even better!

by A true chiefs fan on Apr 25, 2009 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah but

They would have had to give up a fortune to move up for those players from the 3rd round. The Raiders had good players sitting in their lap and gave them up for terrible picks.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 25, 2009 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

ya we pretty much got shamed in this draft so far unless we start getting

line guys we are in trouble right now.

Not necessarily

Our line probably isn’t in as bad a shape as we think it is.

We have Goff at Guard now which will make a huge difference and should help Niswanger out some at Center. Right Tackle is still a concern, but maybe they’re thinking they can pick someone up off waiver from a team that just upgraded the position in the draft. You don’t need a superstar to get the job done at RT, especially if you have a good Guard there next to him.

We had one pick and they picked a guy they thought would be a linchpin of the new defense if you listen to Pioli’s comments Chris quoted in the article on the front page.

So its not that bad. It always seems better when you have more picks, but that just means you have more picks.

Tom Cable on DHB

Q: Was there a time when you thought you might have to trade up to get him?

Cable: There was. There was some time the last two days; in particular, last night it got a little bit nervous because there was some teams that tried to move ahead to get him. So, you really start worrying about all that.

Heh, they thought about trading up to get him…that would have been sweet.

Him going to the Giants seemed like somewhat of a stretch.

They sure are dumb. I am so glad we are not in that situation guys.

Given this pick . . .

. . . and the history of Al’s picks, let’s start a prayer circle for Al’s continued health well into the future. ;-)

hahahaha

both the Raiders and Broncos are doing some incredibly stupid things this offseason. Hope it continues.

by KCCheeze on Apr 25, 2009 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

Raiders yes, donkeys hell no....

Donkeys are doing alot, but when you stop and think, they are bringing in alot of players for which they can choose from during camp…..i cant understand how everyone else is trading around but the Chiefs?

by Sea of RED on Apr 25, 2009 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

The Broncos gave up one their 1's next year

Geez…that’s almost HALF the Cutler trade….for CB Alphonso Smith from Wake Forest? I mean he’s a good player (from what I’ve read) but to trade up, a 1st rounder no less, for him?

by Joel Thorman on Apr 25, 2009 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

And they have NO QB!

They trade away the most difficult position in the league to get, a player that teams spend millions of dollars and 1st round picks year after year trying to find. The Franchise QB.

They had him and they let him get away. What do they get in return? An OK running back, an undersized CB for a 1st rounder that could turn out to be a top 10 pick (at this rate) and a freaking TE.

They gave up two 3rd round picks for the last pick in the 2nd round.

Totally insane.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 25, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, we might not

be the best yet, but the faders will be bad for a long, long time!

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

Wow!

I’ll take Tyson over both of those players.

HAHAHAAHAHA @ Raiders. Fail sauce.

by SupremeChief on Apr 25, 2009 10:16 PM CDT reply actions

I love it.

ESPN.com’s Scouts Inc ranked 80 safeties coming into the draft, Mitchell wasn’t one of them.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 25, 2009 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

That was one of the funniest ESPN segments I have seen

Berman says, “Uh, this has never happened to us before but we do not have highlight tape of him.”

Mitchell could turn out to be a Hall of Famer and it will STILL be a bad pick because he wouldn’t have gone earlier than the 5th round according to Kiper.

Larry English

I think English is a great pickup and will do an awesome job in SD. The MAC produces solid football players.

Merrian/English/Phillips…not to shabby.

and I LOVE Al Davis for this move. :o) He made my day! Dude is craaaazy!

Am I psychic?

I wrote this on the 23rd because I assumed Maclin was going to the Raiders and I was lamenting having to hate one of my favorite college players:

I know that isn’t certain, and it is just as likely that they will draft some unknown project or Usain Bolt with their pick. Al Davis likes to throw deep, and not just sometimes. He would call deep passes on every play if he were coach. Tom Cable isn’t going to have any say over who gets picked here, and it will certainly be the fastest WR on the board. The possibility exists that the most NFL-ready reciever Michael Crabtree drops to the Raiders, and they look at him and say how fast is this guy? Then, Davis promptly calls in the pick: Darius Heyward Bey. WTF, Al? But he’s not that stupid, we think. They will call Maclin’s name, and we will have to watch him run effortlessly as he did in college, and be called out by Al for failing to hustle.

You say something like, "Is that it?" I know what you`re trying to say. You`re trying to say, "Aww yeah, that`s it." Then you tell me you want some more. Well...I`m not surprised. But I`m quite sleepy.

I would just like to note

That I pegged this a while back. Bey is going to bust…. really really hard. I was hoping Al would fall prey to the same kryptonite that led him to draft guys like Tyvon Branch who have little else aside from freakish speed to offer because I didn’t want to get stuck playing Crabtree, Maclin, or even Nicks twice a season.

Bey fits Al’s history though if you look back at it. He covets speed above all else. Even before the dementia-boat sailed Al Davis loved guys with freakish speed and DHB has plenty of it. He’s a 6’2" 210lb receiver that runs a 4.30 40yd, how could Al possibly pass that up?

Stupid, stupid pick. But it was predictable at least so that’s something.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...
