We're almost ten picks into the second round and Rey Maualuga was finally picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 38th pick in the 2009 NFL draft. That's a big drop for the USC linebacker.

We're into our sixth open thread today and that's on top of a few other threads that are 350+ comments, at least. I've embedded this NFL.com draft widget so you can follow the picks here if you want. Manually updating the post with each pick was a huge hassle. You can follow the picks at NFL.com's draft tracker as well.

Make sure you check out Mocking the Draft for updates from our fellow bloggers at the NFL draft.

No way in hell

Brown drops into Round 3. Speaking of our R3 pick, does this put Shonn Greene on our radar?

Interesting

Thought he was more of a 3-4 OLB guy.

So did I.

He could play RE in a 4-3, though, according to Mayock.

There is Everette Brown.

Finally.

He lasted forever.

Us not trading down (Jets) or taking Curry was the biggest surprise to me.

Get over it.

Obviously, there was no serious trade offer by the Jets.

It’s not a surprise if no one really expected it to happen.

Get over it. Stop whining.

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He isn't whining, he is stating his opinion.

Please stop taking any stance that doesn’t agree with you personally.

Sorry.

That wasn’t as much directed to The_Truth as the naysayers early.

I apologize, Truth.

I disagree wholeheartedly, but that wasn’t a whine. I do stand by the first two sentences, though. I didn’t read anybody say that the Jets trading up to #3 was a possibility. There was talk about them trading up to St. Louis, then it was all New York-Cleveland chatter.

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Naysayers have their opinion too.

I have watched this all day. Please stop viewing everyone with a different stance as personal.

You have your viewpoint, and have touted your mock picks, but once someone disagrees with you, you are on the attack.

You have a right to state your view, as do those who disagree.

I don't have religion. I have Baduizm...and Billie Holiday...and Janet. Actually, just Janet.

I overreacted. I apologized.

I stand by my standpoint, though..

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on your points though

Jets weren’t serious with us…though if they were I would have taken the deal they gave the Browns…

by Joel Thorman on Apr 25, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if I would.

I’m not a big fan of any of their players.

And all the Browsn got beyond that was a 2nd round pick and a 6th round pick. Sure, a 2nd would have been really nice, but we wouldn’t have gotten Tyson Jackson at 17.

I think I would have rejected the deal, personally.

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Standing by your opinion is awesome, just as is apologizing and respecting others for standing by theirs.

I'm not sure that was a whine.

Sounded more like voicing his reason for voting “Other/In the comments” in the poll.

by Mully on Apr 25, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude relax...I have a right to my opinion and you have a right to yours

I don’t believe for a moment that there wasn’t serious talk regardless of what was said. So keep your mouth shut if you don’t have anything productive to add instead of making attacks at my comments.

But it takes away from the draft picking at #3 and then NOTHING……but watching other teams get players you wanted all along….

by Matt_Grbac on Apr 25, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I never thought I would say this.

But I almost wish we would have traded the number 3 pick for Cassel and Vrabel instead. There was much better value in the 2nd, and who knows if Jackson would have been available. I tend to think it was possible considering.

OU SUCKS!!!!!!

by TexasFight83 on Apr 25, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

there would be tons of value but...

Jackson wouldn’t have been available he was rising up boards the last week not falling

by Krans on Apr 25, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jackson in the 2nd round?

He probably would have gone 9 to Green Bay. There was a lot of talk about New England (who was supposedly “in love” with him as well) trading into the Top 10 to draft him.

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree.

Jackson, going into Draft Day, was mostly a consensus Top 10 pick. The two other big droppers, Maulauga and Everette Brown, both weren’t expected to go until 11 (Brown) and 12 (Maulauga) at the VERY earliest. Tyson Jackson, at the very latest, was expected to get taken at 12 by Denver.

This draft has gone apeshit, yes. But Jackson falling to the 2nd round would have been the biggest drop in NFL Draft history, IMO.

by rockchalk on Apr 25, 2009 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I figured there’s no way he goes past 16 to SD.

I thought Pioli would make a BIG splash!

He is known as a draft genius….this is his first gig as a GM by himself….the Chiefs have multiple needs….I just dont understand why he would settle with Jackson at #3…..he says no one was calling but that seems like crap to me.

You'd rather he pull a Carolina Panther and trade

+100.

Agree, agree, agree.

If we could have gotten a steal and gotten someone Pioli and Company sincerely wanted, then boom. Make the deal.

But I want next year’s 1st round pick, too.

I know it's early,

and I am a believer in what Pioli is trying to do, but I"m starting to wonder who the draft genius really was. Have you seen how many picks Bill B in New England is stacking and wheeling/dealing with?

Why wasn't Cassel NO DEAL a Headline...at least when i could get logged on here??

I made a FANPOST.. I admit it was my first try… Then was pointed out by the illustrious primetime that it had been mentioned 6 times or so..

When I heard this first reported it was the HIGHLIGHT of my day..That we had locked up Cassel. Now It turns out to be a sham..

Was this posted somewhere in the front page.. I would figure with just one pick today..that we would have been able to post this?

thanks…not sure this is the forum to post this…but figured it was an open thread.

by Cowboynchrist on Apr 25, 2009 7:31 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

...

I guess not..I went back and found the update..A page back or so. I just figured if the was our “2nd” round pick this year it would be nice to know that he is or isnt locked up…

Been a busy day at my draft party so again I admit i had been busy …too…

Thanks!!!

Yeah the FanPost right below yours covered it

Is it me

or are the Broncos and raiders trying to suck on purpose? Raiders are just throwing darts at the board for their picks.

Broncos offseason consists of firing Shanahan, trading Cutler, Drafting a RB early, trading a 1t rounder next year for a second this year, then drafting 2 corners in the second round…

WTF is going on? I like it :p

That's how I would do it.

Start the Draft at 2 EST.

3 rounds on Saturday. 4 rounds on Sunday.

Living out on the west coast, I have to get up at 7 AM tomorrow to watch the beginning of the Draft. That’s ridiculous.

For real

These teams dont need all that time for their selection they have had months to decide…lower the timer to 5:00 for every team in every round..

So, Buffalo has to hustle up and run up and make a pick.

The Browns can pick whenever, but the Bills could still pick before them.

they said Dallas traded with Buffalo, but I dont see Buffalo having another 2nd round pick. Dallas could have stayed home today.

I just feel really good to be a Chiefs fan

I was checking out the Raiders over at Silver and Black Pride.

Some of the notable fanposts are Al Davis needs to die, Holy Freaking Shit. and True Depression.

Go Chiefs!

Johnson would be a steal in the late 2nd or early 3rd. But then we might be DE heavy

I just did the comparison of the first round of the real draft

vs. the AP mock draft.

Only two people got their picks right. I think we’ll post this on Monday morning.

Talk about a disappointing day...but

I’ve got this feeling that on Monday some more wheeling and dealing will start?

I don’t think we will hear about it for a while…. but hey…

I think we may try and offer one of our 2nd round picks next year for one of the big 2.

Peppers or Boldin.

Not sure how tomorrow is going to shape up…. I just am glad I am not a RAIDERS fan…

:)

See you all tomorrow!

by KCking on Apr 25, 2009 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Indeed.

Although, I’m a bit surprised we didn’t take any ILB’s or DE/OLB conversions. I’m guessing the Patriots like the talent they have there thus far, or maybe they’re looking at someone in the later rounds.

by NESilver on Apr 25, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Prolly a little bit of both

You have to be happy getting Chung and Butler tho…

by KCSatchmo on Apr 25, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do.

I had Butler on the radar for 23, and we got him at 41. Works for me! And we needed another safety behind Sanders and Meriweather, so I’m happy about Chung too.

Best part of all is that we’re addressing our defense, which needed the most attention after this season.

by NESilver on Apr 25, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Both those guys will contribute right away

Only suprise imo was Brace instead of Barwin. But DL depth never ever hurts.

by KCSatchmo on Apr 25, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had Barwin pegged for pick 32

So yeah, it surprised me that we passed on him too. But the Brace pick makes sense with Wilfork and Seymour entering free agency after next season (even though I strongly believe we’ll extend Wilfork… not sure about Seymour, maybe we’ll tag him?).

I liked the fact that we went with an offensive lineman as well, but I was looking at William Beatty rather than Sebastian Vollmer.

I love the sound effects in the background. Ka-ching!

My only nitpick is that Pioli needs to look more… uh… “mafia-like,” I guess you could say, rather than an old man.

About Jackson

Some of you guys were worried about the drop off in sacks for Jackson this year. He went from 10 to 4 sacks. Think about this. When he had 10 sacks he was playing next to who?….Glenn Dorsey!!!! Think on that one.
