The Kansas City Chiefs have selected LSU DE Tyson Jackson with the #3 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Wow, I have to say I'm surprised that the Chiefs took Jackson this high, although he was obviously the guy the Chiefs wanted. Scott Pioli could care less about mock drafts. He took the guy he wanted.

No trade...Nobody bit and I can't blame them.

I'm excited about this pick. Jackson should fit in very well with the new defense. Dorsey, Tank and Jackson? I can tell you right now we'll more than double last year's sack total.

Welcome Tyson Jackson!

this is NOT a good pick

not at all

The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.

I'm fine with this pick

Everything is wait and see right now. Not overly excited about it, but I’m excited about the defense getting better.

This is NOT a reach.

I can get behind this pick

Dorsey and Tank are beasts, with Jackson in the mix of D-Line will be fearsome.

I do not mind Jackson just not at 3

I would rather of Gotten Curry then traded dorsey for Jackson

Sack total

Curry would have improved our sack total more than Jackson will.

Can't say he's the player I'd have picked,

but he looks to be a great fit for Haley’s defense. It could have been much worse (like drafting Crabtree or Sanchez, for example).

Very disappointing

Last year we were getting great deals on players that fell to us. This just seems like an enormous reach for a non-pass rusher.

I agree

But I don’t really care if he’s a reach or not. He’s a great player.

Seymour never had more than 8 sacks for a season in the NFL

yet he still went to several pro bowls. I love this pick. Like i said last week, the guy is the most versatile D-lineman in the draft. Pioli don’t give a shit about supposed experts rankings.

by rustdog on Apr 25, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

This was not a #3 pick...

This guy is a great player, to be sure, but we needed a PASS-RUSHER!! This guy is a run stuffer. Now it shows that Pioli is trying to recreate something from another team and it can’t work that way. We needed to pick up an impact player and Jackson is NOT the impact player that is required of a #3 pick. We needed a guy like Aaron Curry to anchor our defense and make an immediate impact with run stuffing AND pass rushing.

Pioli and Haley can say all they want about trying to use him as a pass rush on a 3rd down situation (I watched and read the interviews on their thoughts on Jackson) and I believe that you need to build from the lines out, but you need to pick up an impact player with such a high 1st round pick like the #3 pick that we had. We better find some REAL GOOD diamonds in the ruff of the LB’s that are still there in the draft because we’ll DESPERATELY need them to manage through this year. I have a REAL bad feeling about our defense. It’s going to be better but I think we’re going to fight like hell just for mediocrity. Unless there’s something about Tyson Jackson or Haley/Pioli really, REALLY think that Hali can be the stand-up pass-rushing OLB then I’d feel a lot more comfortable with this pick. I know I’ll have to wait and see how things turn out but…just because Pioli picked Richard Seymore doesn’t mean that was our impact player that we needed with the #3 pick…

…Sorry…just venting. I was hoping for more…impact…oh, well…

There's no hope with dope...

Would you say that

if we had picked Curry instead? Im liking this pick. I think it will make our D instantly better. We had no one to play there and our LB’s would have guards and tackles on them all day long other wise. This was the smart pick, not sexy but smart.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

I need some confirmation on this

I heard from 610 a few months ago that due to how late we got Haley on board, they had decided not to fire the scouting department and let their contracts expire after this draft.

Which would mean that the same scouting department Peterson and Edwards brought in who have whiffed consistently on defensive linemen drafted….

A DEFENSIVE LINEMAN.

I iz afeared.

If

Dorsey, Tank, and Jackson can hold strong on the line so our linebackers can roam and stop teams from running all over us I will be ok with this. I do not want any more of the flow through defense crap!

hope you are right

I am a little worried about our LB core at this moment.

by tevans96 on Apr 25, 2009 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But what true LB's will we have to roam and stop teams...

because we have agreat (but aging) MLB that won’t play an entire game, another great (but aging as well) OLB that won’t play all game and DJ who will have to do most of the work again like he did last year and that just leaves us with…what? Williams? Hali?!?! Like I said in a previous post above, unless there’s something about Tyson Jackson that we don’t know about or Pioli/Haley know for a fact that Hali can be a stand-up pass-rushing OLB that we DESPERATELY need then I don’t see this going very well. I agree, we needed a DE for a 3-4 but we’re not running the 3-4 yet. We’re running a 4-3 under and we need a pass-rusher…a LB that rushes the QB and can get into the backfield. I’m worrying and I don’t want to worry, but I am…I think we’ll be fighting for mediocrity…maybe better than last year, but not by much because they’re all going to be learning just like they were last year.

There's no hope with dope...

In the 3-4 you want the richard seymore guy that while he may only get 3 to 4 sacks he is opening holes for vrabel and our other rushers to get in there. Same as Docket didn’t get many sacks in the SB or any at all that I recall he opened up that front so the cards LBs were smacking Rothlisberger time after time.

Everyone who wanted curry needs to realize something.

Linebacker in the 3-4 is a very blue collar job. They are super important players but its a position that is popular and accommodates a lot of different people.

Look at the Steelers and how they draft their LBs. Ever heard of James Harrison? Defensive player of the year? Went undrafted and cut from the team twice before the steelers built him up into a great LB.

Curry wasn’t worth it. We are building our defense back up from line back.

Don’t be so sure the first day is over for us anyway.

"...Said he couldn't go on the American way"

by Jux on Apr 25, 2009 3:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.

If you want to have an excellent D, you need an excellent D-Line.

Linebackers are important too, sure. But I’d rather take those in other instances, in later rounds, and take one of the few, impact-level DE’s available.

Yes.

But I’m saying that sacks aren’t what is expected from a 3-4 DE. It’s an unsexy position, sure, but they have different jobs than just Dwight Freeney, for example.

Just watch Richard Seymour play. Constantly in the action. Constantly getting pressure. Constantly taking up blockers. Constantly stuffing gaps.

The fact is, there was no reasonable trade available.

At least, that’s my guess. We offered Detroit a deal. I bet we offered some other teams good deals as well, but they just didn’t buy into it.

If we had to stick at #3, I’d much rather have Tyson Jackson. More of a chance to make a bigger impact.

In their dream scenario, Raji would fall to them. Their dreams are realized.

Crabtree will go to San Fran.

The next two picks should be obvious. The two best players left, IMO, with two needs matched up.

Raji to Green Bay.
Crabtree to SF.

Need help with info

Why wouldn’t the Chiefs just wait a couple picks to select Jackson. Not saying a trade just waiting. Its not like there was any worry about anyone else selecting him that high. I feel like a DE at #3 is going to make a TON of money. I like Jackson just not too sure about paying him Jared Allen type money right now

by AK_47 on Apr 25, 2009 4:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Kansas City was presented with no options to trade down. The teams that wanted Sanchez knew that we were not going to take him, as we already have our QB for this season. So, they chose not to trade with us.

While our selection is technically a reach, it’s who we wanted anyway. Besides, TJ was slated to go in the top 10. So its not even that MUCH of a reach.

Tyrone Jackson

Seemed to skyrocket up the boards late, but never saw him rated higher than 7th. (In rankings not Mocks) Most had him in the teens.

This makes him technically a reach at #3 (whether you like him or not) and as with any pick that IS a reach, you (as a GM) are basically saying “I am smarter than all of you people”. That’s fine, and I dig that Pioli is willing to go against the grain, but if you do it, you HAD BETTER BE RIGHT!

Preferably in a big way. With the players they passed up to get him, if he is not a stud, it will (and should) be considered a bust.

Until I see otherwise, I will just have to trust Pioli and hope for the best.
