I think $41.7 million is way, way too much guaranteed money. While that is just the way things work in the NFL right now, the Lions could have pursued other options if they felt it wasn't worth paying Stafford such a large contract. That is in the past, though, as Stafford is now a Lion. I don't like the decision one bit, but it's time to put that aside and support our new quarterback.

Who knows.
Maybe Stafford will be okay. Its just seeing a team go 0-16

I mean more in the disappointment
I think Stafford could actually be pretty good.

At least he's got a few weapons
With Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith there. Give him a good offensive line and they’ve got nowhere to go but up (lol).
Still, that’s a ton of money for a rookie!
41 million is a lot of money.
As much as I love football it seems a little expensive in these times to being seeing people make that much. Bleh. I can’t get a dealership to loan me 5 grand for a used car.

let's quantify that $41million
that’s excessive for a rookie, who’s never played a snap in the league, and especially one who is likely to sit on the bench for a year or two before doing so. My Gawd!

He's Not Sitting
They’re going to throw him right into the fire. They’ll have to for that amount of money.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
I have a my doubts about that after they re-upped Dante
And do they have a stable enough foundation built around him to just toss him in? Whew! Tough call. They could seriously ruin the boy, but of course you may very well be right. That is an insane amount of money and we are talking about the Lions. I know many of the fans expect them to mishandle it. Listening to NFL Serius all day, there were a lot of unhappy Lions fans calling in complaining about this pick.

That Is Insane
Yes, I’ve made the argument that football is a futures market and young players are more valuable than old players, but the Lions overpaid here. They should have gone for Curry.
By the way, Truth…I think this pretty much disproves your “The Lions won’t draft a QB because of the contract” argument, then stomps it into the ground, then sets it on fire, then pisses on the ashes, :)

I'm totally surprised by this I have to admit
I didn’t think Mayhew could persuade Ford for this kind of cash. I think it’s insane and would have balked at the cash even if it were the Chiefs in the same situation and we needed a QB.
I just don’t think any kid QB is worth THAT much in this draft. I really anticipated two things…1) they’d go for another position 2) after the Jamarcus Russell fiasco, they’d pay around the same price.
And I fart in your general direction UC….I seem to recall you flipped your pick (numerous times I might add) ;-)

Oh. one more thing...the Detroit fans really aren't that keen on this pick...at least the ones that see the $$$ ramifications if it's a bust
I see this as a Tim Couch/Jeff George situation. Good QB’s out of the draft without players to supplement their play. Mayhew better hit HR’s in this draft for the kid to not lose his confidence.

He's Miles Ahead Of Jeff George
George lost his Pro Bowl left tackle (Chris Hinton) and star wideout (Andre Rison) in the trade to move up and his RB (Eric Dickerson) was on a fast decline.
Stafford, on the other hand, is going to have Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith, two stellar young players who are only going to get better. The downside is that Detroit’s o-line has issues, but I suspect that this means Detroit will be drafting a lineman (or possibly two) on the first day to protect their record-setting investment.

I was right there with you Truth
I honestly didn’t think it would happen.
So far I’m 0-1. Hopefully my other predictions pan out better.
I Thought It Might Happen
I didn’t think they’d pay this much…not even close. That’s just a foolish contract for a rookie QB.
Just goes to show that I should have stuck with my original draft prediction instead of letting the POD guys talk me out of it. Listening to other people is overrated. :)

by the way how much cap space does KC have now? Whoever we sign is gonna be making around 10 mill a year!

What the hell...
That’s way too much for a rookie. I mean, I hope he can succeed and all, but giving him that much is a huge gamble.

It almost seems like the contract could be his undoing.
I mean think about it. That much money is adding a lot of pressure on a young guy. The fans are already going to expect a lot out the first pick in the draft, then when you add that money on top.
He will probably self destruct
