Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Chiefs will not take Curry, according to...

one Mel Kiper.  He has them taking LSU Tyson Jackson.  Interesting.  It seems that Pioli wants a Richard Seymour type of player here.  If that happens, then Curry will fall to Cleveland.

My head is starting to spin now.  My latest gut is telling me that they should trade out.  There will be a team desperate for Sanchez.  It could be the Jets, Redskins, Jags, Seattle.

Tomorrow at 4PM ET can't come quick enough.

Does anybody see us taking Jason Smith?

I don’t like the pick but he was considered number one overall in tons of mock drafts before this week. He could fall.

I heard this morning that the Rams are high on Curry.

I hope so, I’d love to see Jason Smith in KC.

I no longer think

that the new brass in KC is gonna come in and salvage whats here and play to its stregnths. Rather, I think they’re coming in and implementing the systems they’ve only known (and have had success with) and finding what players they can that fit that style. Thats cool with me, its a rough adjustment, but as long as the vision is clearcut. Meaning, I would like us to go after Tyson Jackson or Everette Brown who are players that perfectly fit a 3-4 scheme as opposed to players like Curry or Monroe where adjustments will have to be made for.

It hasn't been confirmed that we will be running a 3-4.

I’m pretty sure the consensous is that we are running the 4-3 under. I would rather be at 3-4 but there is just so much confusion going on with what we are actually running. We will get more of an idea after the draft.

4-3 Under

done deal.
they’ll mix in the 3-4 in some situations, but the 4-3 under is the base defense

by stagdsp on Apr 24, 2009 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone should do a fanpost.

Clarifying all this. I see so many people, myself included, referancing our us running a 3-4.

I guess it can’t really be determined if we will stay with the 4-3 under or if it is just step one in the transition.

If you search 4-3 Under

There is a post from I think last week breaking down the basics…of course the 4-3 under has some variations as well, so its not like its a static thing.

But at times it looks a lot like a 3-4, and there’ll be reporters next year who say we’re running a 3-4, when we’re in the 4-3 Under.

Jackson

is a reach, and overrated… will be average at best.

IMO

Trade
Take Curry
Take Monroe
whatever… just don’t reach for jackson at #3

Can't say that I've paid much attention to McShay's history

Kiper on the other hand has been doing this for so long and is far too often way out in left field. His accuracy is abysmal. I’d have to defer to my AP brethren on McShay ;) but Kiper is the d-bag of all draftnic d-bags IMO.

Whats funny is

Kiper is one of the fathers of all mock drafts.

How many of all those 100s of mock draft sites do you believe actually sit and watch hours and hourse of game tape on 100s of prospects? I would suspect none of them.

All those guys see what Kiper or Mayock think first and then start building off of them.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 24, 2009 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

So by that logic

Kiper is the “father of all draftnic D-bags.” Lol.

We’re all just fans ;). I figure when a person claims to be an expert, and they take a paycheck for it, they assume the liability of D-baggery.

John Clayton

just said the same on sportscenter, he believes they will take jackson unless they trade with redskins, if so he suggested they would take maybin

by Chief Arrowhead on Apr 24, 2009 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

Check it

if we drafted Monroe I’d move Albert to RT but if we drafted Smith I’d move him to RT. And drafting a RT @ #3? Not gonna happen. Basically, I think Albert is a better OT than Smith. The way he has shot the draft boards over the course of this past year is unlike anyone I’ve ever seen before. Almost makes me weary

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 24, 2009 1:43 PM CDT reply actions

Smith has been a top 5 pick since January

The reason some people didn’t pay attention to him is because he played for a crappy school that rarely has NFL caliber players.

by ChiefDJ on Apr 24, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

The last scouting reports I read...

all said that Smith is an elite pass blocker, and an average run blocker at best. While they also say that Monroe has good feet and can play the pass or the run. Did you see something differently?
Wh would you put and elite pass rusher at RT if he’s not rated nearly as highly as a run blocker? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

by Texas Chief on Apr 24, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I've been reading Smith has better feet too

which is contrary to what I’ve personally seen on tape. Monroe seems to be a lot smoother and fluid but I’ll resign to the experts opinion(s). Normally it would be the other way around but I think Smith is stronger than both Monroe & Albert and a lot of scouts see him to be a powerful run blocker. Interestingly enough after I typed that post I came across NFL’s last mock draft before the real thing and check out what Gruden had to say: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80fef85a&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true

His comments were interesting to me particularly because Muir was a former staff member of his.

Loadholt, Meredith, Tupou, or Kropog. I still hope we take Kruger if he is there though.

Pshhhh

I like him….he is usually pretty insightful…

Sometimes he is a liberal soapbox but usually pretty right on football wise….Torry Holt excluded…

by woodman212 on Apr 24, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he's mostly pretty solid as well

A little too Patriot/Favre focused over the years, but usually has solid info, and his MMQB is a must read…even if you have to skip several sections.

by kcsno56 on Apr 24, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I was worried there was a small chance we may reach and take Jackson...

Then I saw this…now I feel much better.

The Chiefs are clearly leaking this ‘interest’ in Jackson, when have the Chiefs leaked any information since Pioli came over? Do you really think if Pioli is taking Jackson he’d let Kiper of all people in on that info?? No way.

by kcsno56 on Apr 24, 2009 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

If the Chiefs stay at #3

I don’t see them taking Curry. My money is on one of the two tackles. either Smith or Monroe. I don’t see the Chiefs taking Tyson Jackson at three, but I think they like Jackson. If the Chiefs manage to trade out of the #3 spot which is looking less and less likely, then just about anything could happen, and we could wind up with Jackson, depending on the trade and how far down our first pick would be.

by G.L. on Apr 24, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

My guess

We trade down to take Jackson in the middle of the first round.

Maybe WE take Sanchez at #3 and send him to the highest bidder

That would be like having product in hand. No more speculation about someone jumping you to take Sanchez. If you want Mark, then come and get him because he would currently be a Chief. Let the bidding begin…..

by BigRedChief on Apr 24, 2009 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

Drafting him though

Significantly reduces our leverage. Because everyone knows we will trade him.

SMITH

Take him if he is there, Curry if he isnt, but stay at #3. Either would be worth the money.

Mel Kiper is

an older not so sharp version of Todd McShay :) Gotta love the dude hair though!

I agree with a post by kcsno56. Why would we leak anything unless there was a reason for it. Just the Don P doin his thing!

Jackson is a reach at #3. I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for the guy. Then again I think these rookies get too much money anyway.

by Mostate44 on Apr 24, 2009 2:39 PM CDT reply actions

Jackson Vs. Curry

It would be a serious misjudgment to pass on Curry to target Jackson. The reason people keep giving for not taking Curry is exactly the same reason not to take Jackson. Jackson is not very good off the edge as a pass rusher. In the last two seasons Curry has far outperformed Jackson.

Last 2 seasons

Curry – GP 26 – TKL 204 – TFL 29.5 – SACK 5.5
Jackson – GP 27 – TKL 72 – TFL 17.5 – SACK 8.5

So the player that is hardly asked to go after the QB (curry) has only 3 less sacks than the guy whose job is to get after the QB. Curry also has 12 more tackles for a loss than Jackson.

And if you think Curry can’t get the QB when he wants to just watch some of the film of him going after the QB, he is usually the first guy there not a player mopping up after the first guy missed (Orokapo).
