Yeah it Hurts but...
I think the Chiefs will be better in the long run for it. Pioli is trying to build a dynasty not a one year winder. Accumulating future draft picks will set the Chiefs up well for the future. I can promise you know that every Chief fan will be watching the Falcons and that second round pick next year will be the most scrutinized and examined one!

Great move
Tony wanted out. We couldn’t get a second pick for him last year. I’m glad we got a second rounder at all.
This is what the Patriots do! They stockpile picks, even if it is next year. We’ll still need it next year too.

Expectations on each teams forum
Weren’t we all saying that it should be a 2nd and 5th this year? Every forum over values it’s players and the real fit ends up being somewhere in the middle. imo from the forums I have read concerning the Cassel trade and this one.

My first reaction

As much as it hurts to see him go
and double for me as a Cal fan and a Chiefs fan, I gotta admit, this was the right move for the Chiefs.

win now???
well what happened was carl peterson was fired and pioli hired. LONG TERM people. we were not going to fix this team this year completely anyway. everyone needs to take a step back. tony wanted a chance to win. i dont think atlanta is SB contender but hey they should be playoff contender and tony could get some wins there. deep breathes everyone.

I Think This Was A Wise Move
I loved having Tony G with the Chiefs as much as anyone, but he’s a TE over the age of 30 who’s likely only a couple of years away from the end of his career and supposedly he’d be in an offense here that doesn’t feature the tight end. This was as high as his trade value was ever going to get and this could very well net the Chiefs a player who will be as valuable to the team as Tony would be for the remainder of his contract (keeping in mind the age).
Yes, we hate to see one of our favorite players go, but this is a move for the future and that’s a good thing.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

I Do Wish It Was A 2009 2nd Rounder
But a second round pick is still a second round pick and it will still be valuable.

It'll Depend On What Haley Does With The Receivers
If he ends up featuring the 3rd receiver more (like he did with Steve Breaston last year and Bryant Johnson the year before) then Tony wasn’t going to produce huge numbers here.
This depends on how well the Chiefs receivers like Webb can produce in that offense, though…to Haley’s credit, though, Bryant Johnson was not that good but Haley’s offense made him look like a starter. Maybe it’ll work for Webb (although I’m skeptical).

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

by UCrawford on Apr 23, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
As devil's advocate
Tony was someone who could be split out wide, lined up in the slot, and still be productive. Like DTR said, Tony G wasn’t just the greatest TE ever, he is an elite receiver. He would have still had monstrous numbers in Haley’s offense, probably bigger than what he’ll have in atlanta.
But keep in mind, Gailey is still here, and our line is stil a work in progress. The Jolly Red Giant will play plenty this season and will become an asset that brings something to the table that Tony didn’t… 6’7"

My expectations for this season
were never high anyways so I like the trade. On the poll last week I voted that we will have a 6-10 season, take Tony away we finish 5-11, 4-12. WE ARE REBUILDING and it takes time, our team is young, and this years schedule is tough. We will compete for the playoffs in 2010 and we will be happy about that 2nd round pick.
This year was going to be a wash with or without Tony.

I’m glad this is over. I would have liked to have a 2nd round pick for this year but it must not have been available. I love Tony G, might be my favorite chief of all time and I’m sad he’s gone but this is a good forward thinking move. This shows that we are moving past the old erra of paying people for what they did and acting like these treasured fan favorites are more important than the actual chief franchise. Tony we’ll miss you but I can’t say I"m wishing you good luck ;)

The Falcons Are Getting Some Decent Compensatory Draft Picks Next Year
That’s why they could afford to let the 2010 second rounder go. And that’s fine…the odds of finding a very good player with that pick are likely a lot higher than finding them with a 2009 3rd or 4th rounder.

I’m sure one of the psycho’s on this site has worked the numbers on number of players who have become 8 year pros from the second round vs the third and fourth and I’m pretty sure it will be skewed heavily to the second rounders being a much higher caliber. I would be happy with the 32nd pick in the second round....
…if it means that Tony G gets a super bowl ring this year (2010 Super Bowl)
I would be even happier if Falcons do poorly this year (we get a high pick in the 2nd), Tony comes back for one more season and wins the Super Bowl in 2011, and then Chiefs win the big game for 5 straight years after that. Now THAT would be ideal. ;-)
Tony will NOT retire as a Falcon, mark my words that the day he ‘hangs it up’ it will be as a Chief. I truly hopes he gets is ring (in 2011 and NOT 2010, but I will be happy either way).

So you think..
That Tony will play out his contract in ATL and then decide to come back to KC? Or are you suggesting we trade BACK for him later.
Just let him go. Seriously. Neither of those things will happen and Haley and Pioli won’t use a TE like Tony anyway. It’s a new chapter in the chiefs now. Hopefully this one has more wins and play off runs.

When I say Tony comes back for one more season and wins the SB in 2011, I was thinking it would be in Atl, not KC. (I want him to get his ring, just not in 2010 so we can get to pick at the TOP of the 2nd instead of the bottom.)

When I tell my nine year old son that Tony G is gone, that his favorite team no longer includes his favorite player, what am I supposed to say, “Hey, it’s a business.”? That sucks!
Good for the team? Time will tell, if the team is wins, if this is indeed only a business. But when I’m trying to instill values in the future of the planet, “It’s a business” leads us to places that I don’t think any of us will be happy with.
I’ll root for Cottam, like any good fan. And I’ll cheer for the wins, no doubt. But I’m afraid of destroying an organization in search of wins.

Football Players Aren't Heroes
They’re professional athletes paid to perform tasks at a high level. They aren’t playing football for you out of the goodness of their hearts…they’re charging you money for it.
When I tell my nine year old son that Tony G is gone, that his favorite team no longer includes his favorite player, what am I supposed to say, "Hey, it’s a business."?
Unless you’re a fan of lying to your son, then yes. Football’s a business…doesn’t matter whether you think it sucks or not, that’s just reality. Pioli didn’t trade Gonzalez because Pioli hates him…he traded Gonzalez because he thought a 2010 2nd rounder was a good deal. Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong, but he made a call based on what he thought was best for the Chiefs long-term.
Besides which, your “hero” wanted out of KC. He didn’t want to be here. So if your son’s that upset at the Chiefs for trading him away, just tell him that his hero didn’t really want to play for your son’s favorite team anyway.
But when I’m trying to instill values in the future of the planet, "It’s a business" leads us to places that I don’t think any of us will be happy with.
It’s a football team. That’s all. All I care about is whether it wins games and championships. If it wins championships, it’s a successful team, if it doesn’t then it isn’t. Trading players away for what they perceive to be better value is just the way it’s done.

Just a business.
“It’s a football team. That’s all. All I care about is whether it wins games and championships.”
I have a hard time buying that when we all spend so much time tapping our worthless keyboards on this site over issues that we have no say in whatsoever. We care about far more than wins and losses.
I want to teach my son what is true AND what should be true. You’re absolutely right, though, that I shouldn’t be using professional football to do that (certainly not professional basketball, yikes!).
But if you have kids you should certainly understand that football players ARE heroes. They are NOT role models, and we can debate whether or not they should be, but they are heroes.

I am a chiefs fan not a TG fan and that is exactly why I say this is a boneheaded move.
Atlanta got one over on us. That is the bottom line.

A 2nd Round Pick Next Year Is Better Than A 3rd Or 4th Rounder This Year
And nobody else was going to cough up a 2nd rounder this year…and nobody was going to trade away a 2010 2nd rounder for him after this season. This was the best possible deal the Chiefs could have gotten. It’ll hurt a little now (although not as much as you might think if TE was being de-emphasized in this offense) but we’ll look back on this trade in a few years and be happy with it.

Why? Because you know the strength of the drafdt class next year?
Because you know what the draft strategy is going forward? Because you know what other teams were offereing in comparison? Or because you really want 2 player acquisitions on Saturday instead of just one?

I actually think the pick might be higher next year, because I don’t see ATL going 11-5, plus I think the draft class will be stronger from what I’ve heard.

I think it's funny...
how Tony was all like “I only have one, maybe two years left! Please trade me! I’m running out of time to win a championship!”
And now that he’s been traded he’s all like “I look forward to making a Super Bowl run every year for the next three or four years!”
I’ll always love Tony, but I don’t like how he handled this whole situation. He gave up on the Chiefs. Pioli did what he had to do in getting rid of him.

As a team that often trades players and/or picks for future picks (They traded AJ Feeley to the Dolphins for a 2 a year later, and they traded their 1 last year to the Panthers for a 2, a 4, and their #1 this year), let me say that you’re all going to have a fun time rooting again the Falcons next year for the better 2nd round pick.
Whoever plays the Falcons will be your other favorite team.

C'est la Chefs...
This is the Pioli gameplan. Long term, it’s great, short-term it’s a definitely a little confusing. We say, be philosophical about it and wait and see. We don’t like the win later approach, but for the franchise it was probably smart. Tony’s trade value isn’t going up, so we let go and see what happens.
The offense has a log bigger burden now, but they kinda already did anyway.

It all depends on Cassel
If he is as good as some people thinks then losing Tony G will not be as problematic. Before Moss and Welker, Brady did not exactly have the all pros to throw to. He had decent receivers and good protection. Also as mentioned here, Haley’s offense does not feature the TE as much. For how they use it, Cottam will probably work fine.
by Nelly on Apr 23, 2009 2:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I actually expect our offense this year to still feature heavy TE
in part because our O-Line is still in progess, and in part because Cottom has a size that is absolutely rare. Cassel and Haley are foaming at the mouth to toss this guy jump balls in the end zone. Tony was a professional with great hands, a great personality, and a legacy that will forever be remembered. But you can’t coach 6’7".

Best trade we could get
we got a 2nd rounder for a 30-something tight end, so I give Pioli a +1 there. But I don’t think we will find a player in the 2nd round that can match TG’s production and we lose an entire year of production by not getting a draft pick this year, so there’s a -1 on the deal. In all, I won’t bag Pioli for making the trade but I won’t jump up and down and say I’m happy with it either.

We love Tony.
We love winning.
We want to win more, for a long long time.
Tony doesn’t want to wait a long long time.
We get a second round pick for a guy near retirement.
Where’s the problem here? Is it the winning for a long long time part?

As far as I know, none of us know the staff or the scheme that we’ll be trotting out on the field opening day. This year easily could have sucked WITH Tony on the field for us, it’s the nature of the game.
It’s an emotional day, and we all need to take a step back and chill — on both sides of the issue. After the season’s in full swing, arguments can be made. As it is, we don’t know the end product. Wait and see.

Looking Forward
Although I am disappointed in the extra pick being in 2010 versus 2009, I do have two questions for the forum.
First question is do the Chiefs actually hold this pick till next year or possibly utilize it as leverage in some sort of trade this year?
Second question is , how many people would be upset if as an example we traded LJ and next years second for Boldin (hypothetical yet could be realistic).
TG had a phenomenal career in KC and we should be proud of what we got to see him accomplish in our stadium. I wish him the best in ATL but whatever he does in ATL will never diminsh what he accomplished at Arrowhead.

I don’t think Pioli is locked into the mindset that he’s going to trade this pick away. But I think any pick is trade bait if the opportunity presents itself. If not, then we pick twice in the second round next year, and we’ll be happy to be doing so.

I first hear dof this at school. I was floored. I loved Tony as a player and as a person. The thing that hurts the most is that I am a HUGE Schottenheimer fan and I really look up to him. Tony was the VERY LAST holdover from that amazing Martyball era.
Honestly, I think he wanted this. He wanted a Ring so we all should respect that. I believe that LJ and possibly Waters will be next. But trading tony for just a 2010 2nd round pick man we can do soo much better than that.
Love you Tony and I hope you thrive over there…..just as long as we dont play you.

This is a new year, new team, new era. Tony G was beyond question the face of this franchise, but a holdover from past regimes. Perhaps another reason for the trade is to help Chiefs’ fans to move into the new ear with Cassel being our new face?

Pioli & Co. are going to be very hated upon and criticized. I for one HATE this move. I wanted him to retire a Chief. I’m as much a Chiefs fan as a Tony fan and I dont like this one bit. Tony deserved and should have retired a chief. Now he wants to play 3-4 years instead of 2?
Yes Pioli is still a to be good GM, I hope, but this hurts him more than anything else right now. I’m really not a huge Pioli guy anymore.

He Didn't "Screw" Anyone Over
He made a trade of an aging player who wanted out. He sent Tony to a decent team and got a first-day draft pick in return (more than anyone else was offering).
Maybe the trade works out, maybe it doesn’t…but we won’t know that for another year at least.

Totally agree and in response to ESPN/Dilfer
how is Cassel’s development hindered any more than Ryan’s was last year. Ryan didn’t have Gonzalez last year and he turned out pretty decent.
We gotta get the Oline up to stud though, you give any NFL QB 4+ seconds to make a decision their gonna do well and the WR’s will get open.

I sincerely believe that the #3 pick this year will be o-line if we’re not able to trade out. Smith or Monroe…one of them is ending up here. Even if the Lions grab Stafford, I don’t think we’re getting Curry.

I hope we do not go o-line with the #3 pick.
1st) Cassel o-line last year was not as good as the one that he will be playing behind THIS year. (He was the most sacked QB in the NFL last year).
2nd) Even with Cassel being sacked a TON last year his team was still able to win a lot of games. Why? Because New England had a good Defense last year, and ours was, well it was NOT.
3rd) Our biggest issue last year was with our Defense. Do you REALLY want to be fighting with the Donkey’s for the 32nd ranked Defense AGAIN this year?
We need to draft D early and often in this draft. We have an outstanding LT in Albert, and we picked up a great O-lineman through FA already. Our O-line is already better than last year (which was MUCH better than the one that Cassel is used to playing behind). Players like Curry are rare, and even IF there is a Curry caliber player in next years draft I hope that will not be selecting high enough in the first round next year to pick that player up anyway.

At First...
I "thought" this was a bad decision. But I suppose any Chiefs fan would at first. After thinking about it was an alright deal. I’ve read majority of the posts, and well like you said UC we got a 2nd round pick for a TE, an aging one at that and that’s pretty dam good if you think about it. Great TE’s are rare and to recieve a 2nd for one that is past his prime isn’t too bad after long consideration. Of course we will miss TG dearly, probably the best TE to every play in the NFL, just without a ring. I’m glad that the pick is next year, next year’s class is suppose to have a lot of talent I hear.
So Now, here is to wishing Brad Cottam will be able to succeed.
It sure will be weird to not see TG on the field in Arrowhead. Hopefully we play Atlanta one more time before TG is done.

Right now, I don't like the deal
But, after thinking about it, and trying to relax a bit, I have to concede, that you can’t really evaluate the move until we see what we get for the pick. Maybe in 2010, we grab a stud and this turns out to be great move, or maybe we pick a bust that goes nowhere…but until we know what that player is, its pretty much impossible to evaluate the deal.
I wish they’d have waited until just before round 2 on Saturday to see if we could have made this move for a 2nd this year…but I’m guessing Pioli exhausted that possibility.

Here's a thought
our past drafts have been terrible. Pioli probably needs to completely revamp how we evaluate talent and simply hasn’t had the time to blow up our college scouting department and evaluate what we have before the current draft. He may PREFER a 2nd round pick in 2010 because our scouts will be doing things HIS way next year, putting us in a position to draft a better player in 2010 than we could in 2009. He may want that year to blow up our current system and instill his.

then it’s because they’re going for a total cultural shift. Creating such a huge change in attitude is really difficult to do, and it might just be that Pioli and Co. feel that they have to make the sacrifices now to get that done. It’s gonna hurt, but long run, it’s probably best.

We really just started our rebuilding effort under Herm last year and that’s all we have into it so far. IMO we still have quite a way to go. No matter what we do this off-season, we have massive holes on the roster to plug and we’re not likely to complete the job before the season starts. TG wanted out because he’s no dummy and fully understood this. We’ll be better this year but we’re not likely to make the playoffs.

Sure Pioli is rebuilding
If we HAD kept Tony Gonzalez, we’d have been 1 2nd round pick short in the coming 5 years when a player of that caliber will be most important to us. We were going to lose Tony G. by the time it would’ve really mattered anyway. It’s unfortunate, but teams don’t usually expect to go from 2-14 to playoff caliber in 1 year. Just because it happened last year…

1) For your upset children; Simply tell them this – Our main Chief(Pioli) turned him(TG) into a Falcon to fly away and bring us fortune when you grow up. Make it a Native American history lesson story or something. Hell, tell yourself that little story and you may feel better.
2) More about those that think he’s the soul or the face of our franchise. Take a look at the Falcons, losing Vick they had to feel they had nothing left, but they moved on successfully.
3) We WILL NOT suck after losing TG, we already sucked.
