And with the #58 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the New England Patriots Select...
![]() |
San Jose St. DL Jarron Gilbert |
connerman with the pick...
Up to this point, we've seen the Patriots get quite a haul in the 2009 (Mock) NFL Draft. Chris "Beanie" Wells is the new stud RB to learn from Fred Taylor and company. Then the Pats got defensive in the second round - taking premiere talents like DE Robert Ayers from Tennessee and DE/OLB Paul Kruger, who many of us like for our own Chiefs here, if possible. Now sitting for them like a prize all alone as easily the top player available is another D-line gem: Jarron Gilbert.
Gilbert is a man-beast out of San Jose State whose physical presence is dominating. He has the flexibility to play all positions on the defensive line and the instincts to move well even against sizable opponents. He posted 22 tackles for loss (!) last year and 9.5 sacks, displaying the ability to disrupt the backfield. And with fellow linemen like Richard Seymour and Ty Warren to learn from, Gilbert's raw techniques will find plenty to take on.
Secondary could be another option here, but it's hard to imagine ignoring the board here and not taking the best player available. And with these four in the first two rounds, the Patriots have completely enhanced their ball club in ways unexpected.
Previous pick: WR Brian Robiskie

This guy is a project, but huge upside.
Nice pick – this guy looks like he could be impressive as hell in a few years. Of course Junior Siavii was a project with great potential … hmmm….

I like this guy better than Tyson Jackson
Gilbert has better combine numbers and stats than Jackson, and has better measurables for a 3-4 DE than Jackson (Jackson is 6’4 298, Gilbert is 6’5 288). A few mocks have us taking Jackson at #3. I think that is a mistake and if we want a 3-4 DE so bad we should move back into the 2nd round and get this guy.

Belichick's not taking a project in the 2nd round...
If I’m wrong, I’ll be shocked.

Belichick gambles on occasion in the 2nd round
He’ll take players with big upside that are considered “projects” there. I don’t think it would be that shocking.
Robert Ayers and Jarron Gilbert have been my favorite picks thus far for the Pats in this mock draft. I’m not too crazy about Wells and Kruger, and I think I would’ve been more inclined to take Barwin while he was still on the board.
