5. Chiefs — T Ryan Clady (Boise State): The Chiefs slid Albert in at left tackle as a rookie and he thrived. Clady's a natural left tackle who performed superbly while protecting QB Jay Cutler in Denver in 2008. Though the Chiefs clearly needed a quarterback last season, it's too early to consider drafting Joe Flacco.
15. Chiefs — T Sam Baker (Southern California): As bad as the 2-14 Chiefs were last season, they would have been worse without a stabilizing left tackle. With Branden Albert off the board, they'd turn to Baker, whom the Falcons trusted with protecting Ryan despite suffering through injuries.
Backdraft: Joe Flacco among changing parts in '08 re-draft - USATODAY.com
Wow, very interesting article about a 2008 re-draft. If you had last year to do over, would you take two tackles in the first round? I'm not exactly sure what these USA Today guys are thinking.

Hell No!
The funny thing is if you read what they wrote, they wanted to draft both to play LT. Are you kidding me? Would be nice if the writers read what was written earlier. I would have no problem putting Clady at #5. Chris Johnson or DeSean Jackson at #15 would have worked better.
i saw that too.
i love how they picked a LT at #5 saying we needed a QB but it was too early to pick flacco. then at #15 they picked another LT saying we need an LT because we didn’t have one and then had flacco go at #17.
Brandon Albert at #2
Because of his versatility and ability to play Guard??
I got news for you. If you draft a guy with the #2 overall pick and he plays Guard you have a huge bust.
Disagree
HOF guards have been selected in the top 5. If Albert is as good of a guard as they say then he could have been a possible HOF player.
he still has the possiblity of being HOF
he’s only played 1 year and he did phenomenal in a position he hadn’t played. if he keeps up playing like that, i have no doubt that he’s got a good chance of being HOF material.
You have a loose definition of "phenomenal"
He gave up 4.5 sacks in 15 starts, about middle of the pack among starting left tackles, in a spread offense next to a pro bowler . If Albert’s performance was phenomenal, how would you describe Clady’s year?
by Pantherhare on Apr 22, 2009 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions
in my opinion
that’s splitting hairs. yes describing his year as phenomenal is a little bit of a stretch, but not by much. take in to consideration that clady played LT his entire college career while albert played LT only twice before coming into the NFL. so experience is in favour of clady. not to take away from clady’s skill because he is an extraordinary player, but all things considering albert did great for the situation he was thrown into with hardly any support from the rest of his OL bros
It's not splitting hairs
You’re saying that Albert played well for someone who was playing a new position, which is entirely different from phenomenal play that would qualify him for the HOF.
Point is, before assuming the left tackle position is set, remember that they played in a spread offense with a mobile QB and Albert still wasn’t anywhere near the top even with a pro bowler next to him. He may eventually be that future HOFer you refer to, but at this point it’s too early to tell.
i agree it's too early too tell
but all i said is he had the possibility that he could be a HOF. the fact that we played well in a position he had little experience in shows he has the qualities to become one not that he was going to be one. and that was what my point was all along. the fact that you missed that and basically said what i said was why i said you were splitting hairs.
Not getting paid #2 money straight out of the draft they don't
You have to quit looking at what happened 20 years ago. The financial structure of the game has changed drastically. You don’t pay the kind of money that draft pick demands for a Guard.
So our two picks
at 5th and 15th actually would be repicked at 2 and 8
Sounds like a couple of good players with one year hindsight
you don't have to win and you don't need to fight. Supertramp
LMAO
I was thinking the same thing. I guess that’s why USA Today is mostly read by people that get it for free at hotels and in airplanes. I think if Albert played guard and we picked him at 15 that would be a bust
That Article Was Almost As Ridiculous As
The piece that Jeffri Chadiha wrote a couple of years ago where he predicted team records and had the NFL going .600 against itself.
Why on earth would the Chiefs draft two players in the first round to play the same position…especially when they said they considered Joe Flacco at the number 5 spot (but thought he was a reach) then apparently completely forgot about him at the #15 spot (when he was still available in their mock)? Either USA Today had two different people drafting for the Chiefs and the second guy wasn’t paying attention to who the first guy drafted, or they had just one guy doing the Chiefs’ draft picks and he was a tremendous moron.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
Lol

lol i guess you beat me to this comment. looks like i’m as guilty of not paying attention to who wrote what as the USA today guys.
Ludicrous? Nonsense!!......
Anything could have been possible …… since Herm and Carl were still the one calling the picks last year :)

Maybe they're thinking with 2 tackles
our starting quarterback would have made it through week 1, not to mention have eliminated the need for a gimmicky spread offense.

I don't like Clady
I don’t think he’s amazing. I think he thrived from being in the AFC West where the Chiefs and the Chargers were both terrible at rushing the QB. I think he is such a terrible blocker when they run to his side. During the second Chiefs game, he blocked one of our LB’s two times in the game by ROLLING at them. He would see them ahead and just roll at them. After watching some tape of that, you know that a LB would realize it, jump over him, and DEMOLISH the RB. I guess this isn’t as important because he’s an LT, but I just got pissed off and thought he was lazy when he tried to do this. DO NOT WANT.
