By Position, Examining the Kansas City Chiefs NFL Draft Prospects

Usc-lb-rey-maualuga_medium Bj-1_medium 1_medium

Can you believe it's only five days until the 2009 NFL Draft? Geez did January, February and March fly by. Get used to that by the way. I'm probably going to say it every day.

Alright, so far in our fancy little page tracking the Kansas City Chiefs draft interests we've got approximately 60 prospecs that the Chiefs have either had a private workout with; spoke with at the Senior Bowl or the NFL Combine; scouted in person during the 2008 football season; or attended the Chiefs local Pro Day back in mid-April. We've also got a handful of guys who the Chiefs are rumored to be strongly interested in.

What does all of this mean? Well with 60 prospects tracked I'd like to think that we've hit on a good portion of the players that Scott Pioli and Todd Haley are seriously considering drafting. Of course, the scenarios may not play out like Pioli and Haley planned in order to actually be able to draft some of these guys but I think this page is a good starting point for seeing what the Chiefs may do come draft time this Saturday.

One caveat before I continue is that this list is not comprehensive. We've culled this list together from media reports for a few months now and it isn't intended to be official or comprehensive. The full list of draft interests is after the jump, if you want to dissect private workout v. rumored interest guys, etc.

Here the numbers, by position, on who the Chiefs have been checking out:

Offense Defense
OT (10) LB (11)
WR (4) DE (6)
QB (3) DL (5)
OG (3) CB (4)
RB (2)
PK (2)
FB (1)

Offensive tackle and linebacker? Sounds about right for this Chiefs team. Despite not being a comprehensive list, I'm not surprised to see only two running backs on that list. I know the NFL is a league of trends, cycles and imitations but don't you feel like running back by committee is here to stay? I feel like the days of seeing a guy like Marshall Faulk drafted #2 overall are over.

I'm also not surprised at the large number of offensive linemen, despite drafting Branden Albert last year at #15. I get the feeling like Kent Babb was right- Scott Pioli is not happy with the offensive line. Jason Smith? Eugene Monroe anyone?

Thoughts on what you see here? Primetime will have a post up sorting these prospects by round, so we'll have an even better look at what we're dealing with here.

Click over for the full chart of draft interests.

I am thinking Pioli/Haley will probably go with

an offensive tackle to pair with Branden Albert. Bookend tackles would set up the offensive line to protect our new franchise quarterback for years to come. The logic of taking a tackle first and addressing other needs later is very good.

by G.L. on Apr 21, 2009 8:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The logic?

The logic of drafting an LT to replace Albert is very sideways, sir. We would be paying LT money to upgrade at RT, when there is no convincing information that either LT would be better than Albert.

Much more logical is to get a serviceable RT later in the draft, much much cheaper.

Which one of those options sounds like a Pioli business move?

It’s defiantly not impossible that he will pick LT, but that’s an if scenario. IF the chiefs can’t trade the 3rd round pick and IF they don’t see the value in Curry, and IF they don’t want to draft someone they really like just becasue he isn’t projected to go number 3, then they may pick up an LT.

Sideways logic? Not at all.

Branden Albert could be moved to right tackle where he would be superior and in a situation comparable to his position taken in the draft last year. Last year a left tackle (Jake Long) was taken first overall. This year the two safest picks in the draft would be Eugene Munroe and Jason Smith. Branden Albert has already proven he can play at right tackle, and sliding him over would secure both ends of the offensive line for years to come. The logic of nailing down both tackles is not only not sideways, it is impeccable.

Albert's contract

Wasn’t Albert’s contract discounted because he was a gaurd in college and we moved him to tackle after he signed? I don’t know so that’s why I am asking. Because if we gave him 1st round gaurd money to sign then I don’t mind grabing a LT and paying LT money at #3. Just a question or observation not an attack on your post. Can’t wait for the draft, you?

I believe that is correct. The Chiefs are somewhat

secretive about money stuff, so I am not totally certain. Man, my adrenaline is flowing for the draft! This will be some good stuff!

could we track

multiple contact points? for example i see Aaron Curry had both a private visit and was being scouted during ’08 season. Rey Maualuga had 3 (three!) contact points plus USC pro day – make that 4 (FOUR!) contact points.

kudos to chris for this chart btw – i am sure it was time consuming.

having said that…. it would be fun to see who has been getting the most love from the Don in a bite-sized and easily digestible chart. (i thought about pitching in and doing it, but i’m on the other side of the planet and its night night time.)

nfl is looking for that yao ming money

I think we are all missing one important point - the most important one.

It doesn’t really matter who we are drafting. We already made the most important decision and change. Pioli has changed the culture of the organization. “If you are not a professional then you do not play”. These are the old chiefs back. Hard working, nose breaking, tough chiefs !!! Thus I do not care who we draft. I feel already better than I felt last year.

by ALR on Apr 21, 2009 9:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Change.

Talking about it and running players hard (while I think it’s a good idea) can’t replace the value of a good draft.

I agree that what you’re talking about is important, but it really does matter who are drafting.

I still dont understand why its a cardinal sin

to take a left tackle when we have albert already ? Look at the pats they have been very sucessfuly by drafting the best players on the board and what fits their system if pioli feels we should get a left tackle because he will fit our system and is the best player available I wont blame him . In the end we will improve our offensive line when the last time I checked wasnt very good .

Man haven't we.........

Done this before? We had this same discussion 2 week’s ago. Here’s our o-line as of now,
LT- B.Albert
LG- B.Waters
C- Rudy
RG-M.Goff
RT-Sackintosh or who know’s
If you look at that LT is not what we need to draft, we need a C or RT! I’m not saying B.Albert cant play RT,in fact i’m sure he could, but why? He is our LT of the future and he’s not costing us as much as it would to sign one! Plus now we have the issue of a knee injury for Monroe, that put’s it down to 1 save pick at LT! If we sign a LT and not Curry it will be the biggest mistake we could make! That’s if we cant trade down for more pick’s!

by CPT.Caveman on Apr 21, 2009 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.... but

Based on CPTs OL there… it is clear that C and RT are the big needs.
that’s a big IF, Waters stays (which I think and hope he will)

Either way, Albert is the man, and he can play any OL position… except maybe C.
He is good enough to play LT.
He’s flexible enough to move to RT.
He would DOMINATE at G.

So, the Chiefs are in a good position here… drafting Monroe(or Smith) would be good.
Drafting Curry would be great.

They need to focus on keeping Waters, and developing Barry Richardson and Herb Taylor.
Then, with the draft picks they bring in (in rd 1, or with later picks!) they can have a dominant offensive line, with depth and youth.

Curry is being questioned through out the league

To say that drafting another Offensive lineman would be a huge mistake is just ignorant. Why is it a mistake to upgrade to positions with one pick, and have the versatility to upgrade LT and RT or even LG, Don’t get me wrong I think that Branden Albert did a magnificent job last year as a LT but correct me if I am wrong but he played LG in college because the coaches liked Eugene Monroe better at LT. Our Offensive Line has not been the same since Roaf and Shields left, and we need to get some stability back. To have Albert replaced by the person who was better at his position in college is not a mistake, and just makes Albert that much better because he has something to prove and he is at a much easier position, What is wrong with having Two future pro bowlers at Left and Right Tackle………Nothing

by IamtheGreatest on Apr 21, 2009 11:35 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Totally agree with you here

I’m certainly no scouting expert, and honestly don’t follow College FB much at all, but in the highlight videos of Curry I’ve watched (YouTube) I just don’t see what’s special about him…other than he appears to be a very good tackler. I know the argument has been made that he hasn’t been a good pass rusher simply because he hasn’t been asked to be, but if that’s the case then the WF coaching staff are idiots for not using him in that role. If KC can’t get out of #3 & insist on drafting defense, I’d actually rather see them take Raji…he at least seems to have the ability to disrupt the offense with his size.

by jmcgoblue on Apr 21, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

as for why WF

didn’t use curry as a pass rusher; maybe it wasn’t required of their defensive scheme. as we know our previous coach wasn’t a very blitz happy guy. having never watched WF game i can’t say this for sure, but if their coach was the same, then there i can see why curry isn’t known for pass rushing.

by Leaf on Apr 21, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's ignorant to think it's not a mistake

why pay a multi million dollar contract to give us bookend takles when we can draft the best (or close to it) RT in the draft later on that will give us the same results for a lot less. not to mention if we trade down we have more picks to fill in other holes. it is a mistake because there is abslutely no need for it. it’s like ice cream with the cake. sure it makes the dish better but right now we need to be concerned with making sure the cake is good. i know some are going to say that our OL has holes and is part of the cake. RT/C yes. LT no. by drafting an LT with the #3 we are drafting to fill a hole we are have full. if you have a hole in your yard you git some dirt and you fill it. you don’t dig another hole to use that dirt to fill the previous hole. it makes no sence. alright i’m talking in circles now so i’ll quit my rant. my whole point is that we can build a solid OL, if not a great one, with out wasting our #3 on a LT that shouldn’t even be drafted in the top 10

by Leaf on Apr 21, 2009 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you think Curry is the right choice?

He just seems like a guy who’s going to be nothing more than a solid middle linebacker in the NFL…and I wouldn’t say that is a need on this team either, and certainly not for $10-12m per year. At #3 you need to get a guy with potential to be spectacular, even if he’s not the safest pick in the draft. If they HAVE to go D, I’d be happier with Everett Brown, Orakpo or Raji…I think those guys have greater potential to be impact players.

In any case, I trust Pioli’s judgment over my own ;)

by jmcgoblue on Apr 21, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think curry is the better choice

but he’s not the best choice. i just don’t like the idea of picking for something that can be fix by other means. plus i don’t like any of the LTs for a #3. they just seem sketchy to me.

by Leaf on Apr 21, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh and i trust pioli's judgment too

that’s why i’m confident we wont be picking a #3 :)

by Leaf on Apr 21, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus if he isn't costing us much

why is it such a big deal to move him to Right Tackle where they make less money anyway?

by IamtheGreatest on Apr 21, 2009 11:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree. What could be better than having the two Virginia alums

anchoring the left and right tackle spots. With Waters and Goff at guards and Niswanger still at center, this years edition of the offensive line could be VERY productive.

by G.L. on Apr 21, 2009 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

By the way, I think Niswanger at 6-5 stays at center.

With the 3-4 defense becoming more prevalent, a big center makes some sense.

by G.L. on Apr 21, 2009 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know that's

something I don’t think anyone has looked into. What is the proto-typical size for a center facing a 3-4? Nice work G.L.

by Mostate44 on Apr 21, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and with a good online for years we can build around cassel give him some

weapons have a run game the list goes on and on. It would even help out our d who isnt that bad if they actually had a rest or two if you recall we had great first halfs but burned out in the third got our second wind in the fourth only to blow it on d because we were to tired because we went three and out all day and couldent run the ball or the clock because we had a weak o line. Oline makes the most sense because we would be able to protect and build around cassel.

To Leaf:

Are you really saying that, we can find better bookends than Monroe/Smith and Albert. Albert was as close to being pro bowl as he could get for being hurt and for being a rookie. And Eugene Monroe was a better LT then Albert in college. Placing a second year player at RT who had phenomenal season at a much harder position is NOT a mistake. I understand that we were horrid on defense and I am not saying that Curry would be a bad choice, but when you can upgrade two positions with one pick then you do it. Maybe Monroe isn’t lights out better than Albert but I guarantee he is equal or a little better to Alberts talent, so you put him at LT and you don’t lose much production, but when Albert goes over to RT he is 100% more better and a huge upgrade to Damion Macintosh, and now you have a youth injection into the two very important spots of a weak Offensive Line,

I believe with my last comment I made it sound like drafting Curry was the wrong choice, I meant that he was being questioned as a pass rusher and that could be a reason why we choose an O-lineman, I believe that if Curry gets an opportunity to play for the Chiefs he will shine, but I find it absolutely absurd that if the Chiefs pick an OT that it would be the wrong choice because it wouldn’t, Curry is a good pick and upgrading a terrible O-line is also a good pick

by IamtheGreatest on Apr 21, 2009 2:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

ASSUMING monroe/smith arn't busts

probably not but we can have a very good line without them. I agree ablert was great that is why i think it’s a waste to replace him. of course monroe was a better LT in college because albert didn’t play LT in college. he played LG. while i fully believe that albert could play RT but as you said RT is the easier postion so why waste his talents. it;s harder to get a greta LT then it is a RT. we know albert is great. monroe and smith COULD be great but both have flags that sujjest they aren’t really deserving of the multi million dollar contract that a #3 warrents. if there were no other OL in the draft i would be whole heartedly in support of grabbing monroe or smith. but they aren’t. i really don’t think they are as safe as a bet as everyone thinks they will be. i just don’t see either of these guys being the next roaf or shields. granted i could be wrong and they could end up being great and play for many years to come, but i don’t think they will be. i think they will be good at best wich is fine for whatever team picks them up. but not worthy of the #3. albert is already doing an awsome job at LT so grab a RT later on and our line is instently better. all i’m tring to say is that we don’t need to use the #3 to improve our OL 200% sure it could probably be a better OL with monroe or smith but like i said earlier, they are just ice cream with the cake. great complement but absolutely unnessesery for the cake to be good.

Good points

Just wondering who would you pick up as a RT? in the third or later

by IamtheGreatest on Apr 22, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

if we trade down

and get something in the second i’d go with Phil Loadholt, Jamon Meredith or even Max Unger. Unger is a guard projected who a few have projected as a center. he has the versetility to play just about anywhere on the OL so he would be a decent pick regardless of where we put him. if we don’t trade down T.J. Lang (if still there) or Fenuki Tupou in the 3rd. so have Jamon Meredith falling that far but i doubt he will. if he does we could grab him also in the 3rd. Xavier Fulton and Jason Watkins aren’t bad picks for the forth if we wait that long but i personally would take one in the 3rd if we can.
