Todd McShay and his analysis.

It is officially here.  Draft week has started and the rumors are shifting into 5th or even 6th gear.  Out of all the "draftniks" out there it seems most people around the league and even on this sight have a lot of respect for McShay and his work that is put into scouting these players.  Kiper seems to pick his top players and stick with them.  McShay isn't afraid to change who he thinks is the best player and where they may go.  This leads into the next question?

Star-divide

Out of all the players in the draft that the Chiefs may be rumored to take, in his eyes there is only one that he says doesn't have a flaw in his game.  Does McShay tend to be more accurate and less controversy based than Kiper.  I would tend to think so.

He was on Mike and Mike this morning and  beginning what seems to be 24/7 draft rounds, and said something that I hadn't heard quite yet.  When asked out of the top players, who scared him the most and a team may regret drafting.  The answer was something that will certainly cause some debate on this sight.  He seems to be the most talked about LT on here and seems to be considered the smartest pick by a large following on here.  Eugene Monroe, is the guy that scared him the most.

We know he had injuries in college and that is a slight issue.  Something that McShay mentioned was that he has failed a handful of teams medical.  He didn't go into detail, but this is interesting because McShay doesn't just throw stuff out for effect.  He also metioned that he is compared to D'Brickshaw Ferguson who is more of a finesse player, but bigger.  Your left tackle needs to have some finesse for sure, but he needs to have a bit more than that.  The thing that stands out is the fact that this guy has failed some medicals before he has even been drafted.  If we are going to take a tackle with the third pick, we better hope somehow Smith falls to three.  That won't happen because it is likely that he will be drafted by the Rams, that is if the Lions get a deal done with Stafford.  If the Lions don't get that deal done, it sounds like they will be working to make a deal with Jason Smith.  Either way Smith is going top two, which leaves the supposed next best tackle for us at three.

I know, I know I am a huge Curry fan and hope the Chiefs draft him.  If we stick with the McShay theme here, we will.  He thinks that if Curry is on the board and the Chiefs somehow pass on him, it will be the first time that he picks up the phone to say they have made the biggest mistake in the draft.  According to his analysis, there isn't a flaw in his game.  I would agree based on his on the field performance and his lack of injured past.

We can't afford to miss with this pick.  If we stay at three, we will take Curry if he is there.  If he isn't there, we will be scramlbing to get out of this spot, and that may be near impossible to do if we want to get what the #3 pick is worth.

We have all been debating and that is what makes this fun.  We think we know, but we won't know anything until saturday afternoon, and for that matter neither does McShay.  In the end, whoever the Chiefs end up taking, I have to trust and let the new regime do their thing and show us what they can do.

Great points

The suprise with the LTs is that every couple of weeks the order of who the best LT is changes majorly. All of the LTs this year have holes in their game, some are great run blockers but just ok in pass protection others are exactly opposite and still others have commitment concerns.

Andre Smith

Is probably the the best overall tackle. He screwed up being a top five by is behavior at the combine. He still might be a top 10 pick though.

i completely agree

if it werent for his dumbass decisions so far during the offseason he would still be a top 5 pick. maybe even go #1 overall. oh well…

If Curry truly is the rare athletic talent that he is hailed to be

we will draft him…you don’t pass on natural ability like that.

If he is an especially gifted athlete, he will be able to learn to rush the passer, maybe from the “predator” position – the fact that he didn’t rush the QB much in college doesn’t mean he can’t do it.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

Unfortunately, being hyper-athletic does not equal being a great Linebacker

Just ask Derrick Johnson.

Linebacker is a position that it is far more important to be a SMART player than an athletic one. Does Curry have the intelligence to go along with the athleticism? I don’t know.

Typically great athletes tend to rely on their athletic ability and neglect technique and study habits because they often dominate their opponenets physically in college. That rarely happens in the NFL.

Curry is very football smart

If you watch him play he is exceptionally fast at breaking down a play and getting to the ball carrier. He had a huge amount of tackles for a loss and that is as good or better than a sack to me. I just don’t see any holes in his game, when he was asked to rush the passer he was effective.

I think the biggest

question for Crurry is if he has peaked in his game… I mean he was pretty unknown until the last 1/4 of this last year when people really started talking draft and then he was the best player on most boards? Sounds a little funny to me how far and fast he moved up. I think he looks pretty solid but that was just my opion on him.

Maybe the stars aligned

and Sometimes people wake up from adolescense and realize I better get my Ass in gear and figure out how i’m going to live after HS or College.
I think Curry’s story says he already figured things out long ago and the Stars aligned for him.

Good post

Aaron curry is who i think we should draft, but knowing he’s that good make me also wonder how bad other teams won’t him! I think that there are alot of other teams that like Curry and will looking to trade up to get him! So even if we don’t get him he still will help us get some quality pick’s from a team willing to trade-up to get him!
The Don will not pick the best player in the draft, if he can get 2 good player’s for him! I really feel like R.Maualuga is a better fit for us,and if we could get him with one of the extra pick’s and RT with the pick’s we could get with a trade down i would be ok with it! C.Barwin is another guy i’d like to see us go after!

I try not to get caught up too much with one particular draft 'expert'

But if forced to choose, I’d pick McShay as my favorite.

Keep in mind, though, that McShay has said recently that he feels the Seahawks are going with Sanchez at #4, and he as well as others have made the point that if other teams feel Seattle is going with Sanchez there, that could make our pick more valueable as teams try to trade to get in front of the Seahawks.

Its interesting, because I’ve read several scouts that think Monroe is the safest of the OT prospects. He’s the one that I think would have to play LT, doesn’t seem to be physical enough to play RT.

A. Smith was my favorite all season, and if he hadn’t self-combusted at the combine, I think he’d be a solid choice at #3.

All that said, I’m still of the opinion that we’ll go with Curry, and I think we should.

Another point of evidence that we’ll end up taking Curry, is that Teicher, in today’s video blog, says he thinks we’re going offense now…Teicher’s been wrong about our 1st round pick for 3 straight years, and I’m not talking about just barely missing, he’s been waaaay off.

Curry

I will start by saying I think McShay is better than Kiper but I am more of a Mayock guy.

To my point though, if McShay truly said Curry has no flaws in his game then you immediately throw out his opinion. He crosses over from “expert” to “message board fan.” Every player in the history of the game has flaws in their game. It is his job to break down the strengths and weaknesses. If he says Curry has no flaws then 1)He is not doing his job and 2)He better jump on the phone to bash the Rams and Lions for passing up the “flawless” player.

by PodoHawk on Apr 20, 2009 1:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I would disagree with you

No player is perfect, true, but not having a weakness is different from being perfect.

Several players don’t have ‘flaws’ or weaknesses in their game. That doesn’t make them god, it just means that they are at least adequate in every area.

by kcsno56 on Apr 20, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

Have you ever see a scouting report without “strengths” and “weaknesses?” I will answer that for you, it has never happened. Some might have fewer but no one has EVER had no weakness.

by PodoHawk on Apr 20, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Funny the weakness in the draft report

on Curry is also listed a strength. I would say the jury is out on this guy.

Why do some of you say curry is not a pass rusher?

Watch some tape of this guy at Wake Forest when he rushes he is explosive off the line and usually the first man in the backfield, and yes in passing situations. I understand he is a little undersized and will have to get bigger, but, if I were Pioli I would have one hell of a hard time passing on him.

The dude is perfect size.

He is bigger than Aaron Mayin who is a defensive end

Most people would say

That he needs to put on some weight to be a true threat as a pass rusher in the NFL. Which I think will not be a problem. He will still come in and make an immediate impact. I really think that we take him or trade down, I do not see another scenario actually happening.

i dont know all that much about the "draft experts" other than kiper and mcshay

i like mcshay. hes pretty sharp and seem to have a good feel for the players. oh and HE PLAYED FOOTBALL, UNLIKE KIPER!
kiper never played football. never even been a scout. how did that assclown get to be such a genius when it came to drafting? what a tool!

i wrote a fanpost about kiper being a tool. i still stand by my word!

Peter King talked about Monroe's injury history with perspective...

2 teams failed Monroe based on his injury past. They think he may be good for a few years and then the knees may catch up to him and fall out from under him.

In perspective, Anthony Munoz had 14 teams fail him for knee issues and went on to be arguably the best tackle in history…

For what it’s worth….

I understand that you never know

about guys and their injuries. I don’t like that he is considered to be a finesse player.

Wasn't the LT drafted by Denver last year a finesse player?

To answer 808 YES

McShay does have us taking Curry. Even though most on AP will disagree with me, I think we take Curry, (or trade down), which probably wont happen. I really just don’t see the Chiefs going anywhere but defense. We have plenty of holes fellas, take the best player and that is not Monroe. There will be other OL later in the draft, if Pioli chooses to go that direction, Albert is our LT of the future. We can find a quality RT or C in the 3rd.
