And with the #49 Pick in the Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Chicago Bears Select...

9vg6xd3v_medium

                            Arkansas C Jonathan Luigs

Holmeslice with the pick...

The Bears opened their present early in getting Jay Cutler, leaving some less glamorous but no less important needs to be filled with the remaining picks. Their two most notable needs are on the offensive line and at WR (when could we say Chicago is not at need for WR?!).

Luigs gets the nod over some of the tackles because the major bulk of the tackles have disappeared at this point. They need help all along the line where they can get it and Luigs has excelled at center and seems fit for interior line work. This means he can likely play as a guard or center, improving his versatility and stock for the Bears. Some selling points out of his scouting report are "Technically sound, nasty on field demeanor, and a fantastic mix of tools and intangibles." The Bears don't want to whiff on this pick as it will be very crucial to the continuing development of Cutler (and also so that he doesn't start crying after every game from being sacked so much).

They could also reach for a WR, but it would seem with their conservative drafting nature that taking a risk on a receiver based purely on need is not the smartest move. They go O-line and nobody regrets it.

Round 1 is here.

Previous pick: RB Donald Brown

Over Eric Wood?

Not really criticizing, because I don’t know too much about centers, but Wood seems to be generally rated higher. Any reason for Luigs over Wood?

I don't know about either player that well

But one positive for Luigs is that he played against SEC defensive linemen, which is about as close as it gets to the NFL.

They are pretty similar

In scouting reports, both struggle against big NTs, both have the “intangibles.” I went Luigs because he is specifically durable, played against tough competition, and is very technically sound..again from what I hear, the Bears tend to lean towards the safest choice when it’s there and he may edge out wood by a nose.

Makes sense. I agree that interior OL is probably the way to go for them with this pick.

They may find Brian Robiskie too hard to pass up though. He’s the only receiver I think they would consider at this point though. Derrick Williams is just Devin Hester Jr.

Agree about Robiskie

Definitely a strong possibility for them, a solid, intelligent slot guy.

I was hoping KC could get him in the third...

if not then Cody Brown LB/DE or Cadogan. RT

Does anyone else thing there will be a massive slide of centers in this draft?

There are so many good ones, perhaps a lot of teams will think “well I can just pick up a good center later” and the centers will keep sliding farther and farther back. I think there will be a run of centers taken in the 3rd round with good ones still available in the 5th and 6th.

There usually is,

Like Sullivan out of ND projected in the 3rd last year and went in the 6th

I think Mack/Unger/Wood

Will be gone before the 3rd, and then the rest will slide.

If the Chiefs want one rated 4-6, they can get one in the 4th, maybe top of the 5th.
