Draft Sanchez and keep him?
Michael Ash at Warpaint Illustrated wrote a very interesting article about the possibility of us drafting Sanchez at #3 and keeping him - that way, if Cassel was a one-hit wonder, and can't do anything without Randy Moss, we'll have another starting-caliber QB ready to go, and if Cassel is the QBOTF, then we can trade Sanchez next off season and recoup the #1 pick we spent on him.
I'll admit, the reasoning is sound, and it could explain why Pioli isn't in a huge hurry to sign Cassel to a long-term contract...but I'm not sure this is even possible.
Now I know we still have a lot of salary cap room, but if we draft Sanchez at #3, he'll receive a contract larger than Matt Ryan's, regardless of whether he starts or sits on the bench - do we even have enough money to do that?

Problem With That Is
There are at least as many questions about Sanchez as there are about Cassel.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.

Also
You are paying Cassel Starter money and would be handing Sanchez a massive contract. Next season there are some good qbs coming out that would make it a bit tougher to trade him.

Yeah
It would be a wasted pick. We have two decent QB’s who can play in the NFL already. We don’t need a third. We need a pass rusher.

I still think Brodie can play.
He just has toughness issues. If he can put on 15-20 lbs of muscle and improve upon his athleticism I still see no reason why he can’t be a quality backup or even a starter at some point.

I won't join in
IF Croyle can stay healthy, he is good enough to be the type of back-up QB any team would like to have.

Keys to that are
IF and back-up. I agree, but how many years in the league will it take him to figure that out.?

Saying "IF" Brokie can stay healther then he can be a good__________
Has about as much validity as saying:
IF purple marshmellows gre out of my butt ___________
There is no point of even having that conversation because Brokie CANNOT stay healthy.
You cannot QB a team from the trainers table, and you cannot hold the clipboard and be ready to step in from a hospital bed.

It Won't Make A Difference
The guy is just fragile. That’s not an issue of heart, or mental toughness because he’s not sitting out because of minor injuries or bad conditioning…he just breaks easily. Always has and probably always will, so he can’t be relied upon.

He's injured as we speak
What people don’t realize about Brody is that he still has not recovered from the separated shoulder he suffered last year. The seperation was so severe that some people at Arrowhead were quietly whispering that he might never fully recover.
I have not heard any update on his injury since then, but the reports that during the mini-camp he was only able to ride a stationary bike certainly indicate that he isn’t healed yet.

Plus,
You would never recover the value of the 3rd overall pick if you traded Sanchez the following year and you would swallow a lot of quaranteed money. The public attention of having Cassel looking over his shoulder at Sanchez (see: Cleveland with Anderson/Quinn) would also be an annoying distraction.

I dont think.......
There are many question’s at all about M.Cassel that are left to be answered! Sanchez on the other hand is a big question mark, can he handle the presser of being a NFL QB or not, IMO it’s not even close between the two! I dont think there’s any chance that we draft a QB in fact i’m sure we wont!

So it would mean....
Our first AND second round picks were used on QBs…
I might just be grumpy but I dont even like entertaining thoughts like this because there is no way it will happen….

I agree it is weird
When I read it, I thought "Did Ash forget that if we drafted Sanchez at #3 we’d be giving him a ‘bigger than DirtyBird Ryan’ contract with eleventy million dollars guaranteed?

Nah.
If Cassel doesn’t work out, take a QB from next year.
Remember, 2009 is Stafford/Sanchez by default. To give you an idea, if the CBA weren’t expiring, Stafford would still be a Bulldog and Sanchez would still be a Trojan. They are trying to cash in on lucrative rookie contracts in a year that would otherwise have seen Freeman as the top QB (gimme a effing break). If the premise is to give Cassel a shot and keep a #1 pick in the pocket with the intention of using it on a QB if Cassel fails, then why not use it when a more talented player is available? If Cassel fails, we will still have a pick in the top 5 or 10 and have no problem picking a top prospect.
This is, of course, following the premise of a QB pick in the first round. I, for one, do not like the idea of taking a QB in the first round as history has shown there is a 50% chance that he will be a bust. Basing your future on a coin flip is too risky. There are other positions that show a much lower bust rate, all of which KC will be in need of for the next few years.

In essence, Sanchez said so himself.
I remember reading somewhere that Sanchez said the reason he was leaving after his junior year was that he had a better shot at being a high draft choice this year because Bradford, McCoy, and Teabow were staying in college.
